A good way to start is to refresh your understanding of the terms and concepts.<\/p>\n<p>You can\u2019t be part of a meaningful conversation and contribute to the solution if you don\u2019t have a grasp of the concepts and a functional vocabulary.<\/p>\n<p>To this end, we\u2019ve compiled a diversity glossary to bring you into the conversation and help you become part of the solution.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-h-3-font-size\">Understanding the Terminology<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-h-4-font-size\">Intolerance<\/h4>\n<p>Merriam-Webster defines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/intolerant#:~:text=Definition%20of%20intolerant,exhibiting%20physiological%20intolerance%20lactose%20intolerant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Intolerance<\/a> as being \u201cunwilling to grant equal freedom of expression, especially in religious matters: unwilling to grant or share social, political or professional rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-h-4-font-size\">Racism<\/h4>\n<p>Wikipedia defines <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Racism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Racism<\/a> as \u201cthe belief that groups of humans possess different behavioural traits corresponding to physical appearance, and can be divided based on the superiority of one race over another.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-h-4-font-size\">Discrimination<\/h4>\n<p>Wikipedia defines <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Discrimination\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Discrimination<\/a> as \u201cthe act of making distinctions between human beings based on the groups, classes, or other categories to which they are perceived to belong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Discrimination occurs when individuals or groups are treated \u201cin a way which is worse than the way people are usually treated; on the basis of their actual or perceived membership in certain groups or social categories.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-h-4-font-size\">Prejudice<\/h4>\n<p>Wikipedia defines <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prejudice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prejudice<\/a> as \u201can affective feeling towards a person based on their perceived group membership. The word is often used to refer to a preconceived, usually unfavourable, evaluation of another person based on that person\u2019s political affiliation, sex, gender, beliefs, values, social class, age, disability, religion, sexuality, race\/ethnicity, language, nationality, beauty, occupation, education, criminality, sports team affiliation or other personal characteristics.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-h-4-font-size\">Bigot<\/h4>\n<p>Merriam-Webster defines a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/bigot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bigot<\/a> as \u201ca person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices especially: one who regards or treats the members of a group with hatred and intolerance.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-h-4-font-size\">Police Brutality<\/h4>\n<p>Wikipedia describes <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Police_brutality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Police Brutality<\/a> as \u201ca civil rights violation where officers exercise undue or excessive force against a subject. This includes, but is not limited to, physical or verbal harassment, physical or mental injury, property damage, and death.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-h-4-font-size\">Systemic Racism<\/h4>\n<p>Wikipedia defines <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Institutional_racism#:~:text=Institutional%20racism%20(also%20known%20as,and%20education%2C%20among%20other%20issues.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Systemic or Institutional Racism<\/a> as \u201ca form of Racism which is embedded as a normal practice within society or an organization. It can lead to such issues as Discrimination in criminal justice, employment, housing, health care, political power and education, among other issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-h-4-font-size\">Injustice<\/h4>\n<p>Wikipedia defines <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Injustice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Injustice<\/a> as \u201cunfairness or undeserved outcomes. The term may be applied in reference to a particular event or situation, or to a larger status quo. The sense is usually felt in relation to human action such as misuse, abuse, neglect, or malfeasance that is uncorrected or else sanctioned by a legal system or fellow human beings.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-h-3-font-size\">How To Be Part of the Solution<\/h3>\n<p>If we look at the opposite, constructive side of the spectrum, and consider solutions, we need to understand the following concepts.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-h-4-font-size\">Dignity<\/h4>\n<p>Wikipedia defines <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dignity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dignity<\/a> as \u201cthe right of a person to be valued and respected for their own sake, and to be treated ethically.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-h-4-font-size\">Equality<\/h4>\n<p>The Human Rights Commission defines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.equalityhumanrights.com\/en\/secondary-education-resources\/useful-information\/understanding-equality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Equality<\/a> as \u201censuring every individual has an equal opportunity to make the most of their lives and talents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is also the belief that no one should have poorer life chances because of the way they were born, where they come from, what they believe, or whether they have a disability.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-h-4-font-size\">Diversity<\/h4>\n<p>The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) define <a href=\"http:\/\/webcache.googleusercontent.com\/search?q=cache:tNPeRukdaUEJ:https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/Communities\/VolunteerResources\/Documents\/Diversity_CLA_Definitions_of_Diversity_Inclusion.ppt+&amp;cd=1&amp;hl=en&amp;ct=clnk&amp;gl=us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Diversity<\/a> as \u201cthe collective mixture of differences and similarities that include individual and organizational characteristics, values, beliefs, experiences, backgrounds, preferences, and behaviours.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-h-4-font-size\">Inclusion<\/h4>\n<p>The SHRM defines <a href=\"http:\/\/webcache.googleusercontent.com\/search?q=cache:tNPeRukdaUEJ:https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/Communities\/VolunteerResources\/Documents\/Diversity_CLA_Definitions_of_Diversity_Inclusion.ppt+&amp;cd=1&amp;hl=en&amp;ct=clnk&amp;gl=us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Inclusion<\/a> in the same article as \u201dthe achievement of an environment in which all individuals are treated fairly and respectfully, have equal access to opportunities and resources, and can contribute fully to the organization\u2019s success.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-h-4-font-size\">Tolerance<\/h4>\n<p>The Cambridge dictionary defines <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/dictionary\/english\/tolerance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tolerance<\/a> as \u201ca willingness to accept behaviour and beliefs that are different from your own, although you might not agree with or approve of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-h-4-font-size\">Respectful Communication<\/h4>\n<p>AllBusiness defines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allbusiness.com\/respectful-communication-boosts-morale-productivity-workplace-22074-1.html#:~:text=People%20have%20different%20opinions%2C%20different,strengths%20to%20achieve%20common%20goals.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Respectful Communication<\/a> as \u201cthe ability to effectively assert your own views and fully listen to the views of others.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-h-3-font-size\">Additional Resources<\/h3>\n<p>During my research, I found several comprehensive resources to check out:<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-h-3-font-size\">Thoughts to Consider<\/h3>\n<p>After reviewing these definitions and contemplating their meanings, I find it disturbing we\u2019re still struggling with these issues. The alternatives seem so reasonable, and yet here we are in the thick of it.\u00a0Could it be that Ignorance, Intolerance, Scarcity Thinking and Greed are the roots of our social dysfunction?<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m left wondering whether we\u2019re missing something obvious. Kids don\u2019t normalize hate until they learn it from friends and family. It takes social role modelling to corrupt their hearts and minds. Perhaps the real failure is within our education system. Should we be doing more to street proof kids and teach them how to address these issues constructively?<\/p>\n<p>I know I did not receive formal diversity training until I was in my mid-twenties and thirties. And then it was a part of my communication and leadership training. Why not teach this in elementary school?<\/p>\n<p>How do we preserve our kid\u2019s inherent intelligence? How do we train them to expect Tolerance and Inclusion from those in power; then alert authority when confronted with the opposite?<\/p>\n<p>How do we decontaminate our institutions and ourselves through training, exposure, and personal development?<\/p>\n<p>How then do we combat Intolerance within our most revered institutions, without fostering more Intolerance or throwing the babies out with their bathwater?<\/p>\n<p>As a small business owner, how do Diversity and Tolerance shape your hiring, culture, marketing and customer experience?<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-h-3-font-size\">What Do You Think?<\/h3>\n<p>Even though Diversity Training is not my practice area, I believe it is a crucial leadership conversation that directly relates to marketing, experience design, brand values, staffing, customer service and more.
