Apparently, he\u2019s got some lost time \u2013 and infrastructure \u2013 to make up for.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a chat with Germany\u2019s public broadcaster, ARD, he floated the idea that Kiev, which seems to rank higher than Berlin on his priority list, needs to\u00a0<em>\u201cget ahead of the situation\u201d<\/em>\u00a0on the battlefield and\u00a0<em>\u201cshape events\u201d<\/em>\u00a0instead of playing defense. The event he seems most eager to shape? Oh, just the Third World War, apparently. Because he pivoted straight to the Kerch Bridge \u2013 mainland Russia\u2019s lifeline to the Crimean peninsula \u2013 like it\u2019s been living on borrowed time.<\/p><div class=\"g g-1\"><div class=\"g-single a-15\"><a class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"MTUsMSwxLDYw\" href=\"https:\/\/abovephone.com\/?above=macro\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"640\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.activistpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Ad-Black-99-Macroaggressions.png\"\/><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Merz\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/merz-signals-ukraine-could-use-taurus-missiles-to-target-crimea-kerch-bridge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0<em>\u201cif for example, the most important land connection between Russia and Crimea is destroyed, or if something happens on Crimea itself, where most of the Russian military logistics are located, then that would be an opportunity to bring this country strategically back into the picture finally.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Cool, cool. Which picture would that be, exactly? The one labeled\u00a0<em>\u201cCatastrophic Misjudgments of the 21st Century\u201d<\/em>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Probably. Which is why Merz needs a useful idiot to ride shotgun alongside him in the doltmobile to share in any responsibility for the eventual mayhem when things inevitably go pear-shaped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cYou rang?\u201d<\/em>\u00a0say the Brits. Or at least that\u2019s what Merz is apparently hoping they say.\u00a0<em>\u201cOur European partners are already supplying cruise missiles,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Merz\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-ie\/news\/world\/germany-could-be-forced-to-abandon-plans-for-taurus-missiles-in-ukraine-without-uk-backing\/ar-AA1D3A8U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0in an interview.\u00a0<em>\u201cThe British are doing it, the French are doing it, and the Americans are doing it anyway, this must be jointly agreed. And if it\u2019s agreed, then Germany should take part.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Merz\u2019s fellow Christian Democratic Party MPs have been floating the idea in the Western press that he\u2019s waiting for an official permission slip from London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would probably read something like this:\u00a0<em>\u201cDear Herr Friedrich, You are hereby authorized to partake in a highly coordinated, militarized pub crawl. First stop: a punch-up with Russia, followed by a wobbly march to a greasy spoon for black coffee, bad lighting, and a collective hangover.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cAh, wunderbar!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Merz is just days away from grabbing the wheel, and he\u2019s done pretending to be the guy in the backseat yelling directions at Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Scholz, for his part, always said that Germany wouldn\u2019t hand Kiev the Taurus long-range missiles. Not that he had much wiggle room after last year\u2019s leaked audio from Russian intelligence of German Air Force brass workshopping ways to hit the Kerch Bridge without leaving any German fingerprints. Kind of a bad look for a guy who keeps overtly declaring that he wants peace. So naturally, he was furious. Which is why, if Team Scholz suddenly turned around now and said,\u00a0<em>\u201cYou know what? Let\u2019s try a few long-range missile strikes, just for funsies,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0people might reasonably assume that he\u2019d undergone a surprise lobotomy with a NATO letter opener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the coalition partners for Merz\u2019s incoming government, Scholz\u2019s Social Democrats\u2019 support would be needed on any vote. And so far, they\u2019ve shown no interest in greenlighting his WW3 passion project. You know, democracy and all that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minor hiccup, I know. If military ambition and musings alone were all it took, Merz would already be well on his way to having a Netflix original named after him and maybe even a seat with his name on it waiting at The Hague.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But hey, hear the guy out. What if it\u2019s, like, a group project?\u00a0<em>Das ist gut, ja?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nah, dude.\u00a0<em>Nicht gut.\u00a0Nicht gut\u00a0<\/em>at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What exactly does Team Merz think this would look like? Would the Brits and Germans sit side by side, fingers hovering over their respective missile buttons, doing a tense little\u00a0<em>\u201cone, two, three, fire\u201d<\/em>\u00a0and just praying that neither one flinches at the last second and leaves the other one with some very awkward phone calls to make?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If so, that would certainly explain why they\u2019re talking about specifically needing Britain\u2019s non-negotiable participation and not France \u2013 the country that trained a flagship brigade for the Ukrainian army, who apparently learned how to bail out before even seeing action.\u00a0<em>\u201cParis hailed it as a \u2018unique\u2019 initiative,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20250110-ukraine-s-french-trained-brigade-rocked-by-scandal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>\u00a0France24.\u00a0Training 1,700 Ukrainians\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/en\/international\/article\/2025\/01\/04\/ukraine-s-anne-of-kyiv-brigade-trained-in-france-then-dispersed-to-the-front-line-suffers-setbacks_6736700_4.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"\/>in France to fight who then just end up\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/en\/international\/article\/2025\/01\/04\/ukraine-s-anne-of-kyiv-brigade-trained-in-france-then-dispersed-to-the-front-line-suffers-setbacks_6736700_4.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">surrendering<\/a>\u00a0to the foie gras and ros\u00e9 at the local caf\u00e9 prior to deployment is \u2018unique\u2019, alright.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Britain isn\u2019t exactly a great choice for a wingman either, though. If only because it says that its own participation in Ukraine is contingent on Washington holding its hand.\u00a0<em>\u201cEurope must play its role, and I\u2019m prepared to consider committing British forces on the ground alongside others, if there is a lasting peace agreement, but there must be a US backstop,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0British Prime Minister Keir Starmer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/feb\/17\/starmer-urges-trump-to-provide-backstop-to-european-peacekeeping-force-in-ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So for those keeping score at home. For deeper involvement in Ukraine, Merz would need the Brits. The Brits would need Washington. And what would Washington need? For them all to knock it off. But apparently that memo got lost in their inbox among all the world war fantasy fiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cPentagon figures recently questioned one ally about why it was still supplying weapons to Ukraine \u2013 a challenge that was ignored,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0The Economist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/vgTxZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>\u00a0on April 15.\u00a0\u201d<em>Diplomats in Washington also report that some Trump aides say privately that they are \u2018fed up\u2019 with Europe\u2019s effort to strengthen Ukraine<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doesn\u2019t sound like Team Trump is up for holding hands as part of the West\u2019s human chain in its reckless playground games against Russia.\u00a0<em>\u201cRed Rover, Red Rover, send Putin right over!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s hard to believe that there was a time not too long ago that Germany wasn\u2019t trusted with the sharp knives, like nukes. Oh wait, it still isn\u2019t. Technically, the Bundeswehr is still supposed to be defense only, but Merz seems determined to assemble just enough multilateral hand-holding to justify pulling out the long knives \u2013 the 500-kilometer-long ones, to be precise.
