That conclusion<br \/>\nhas been represented frequently &amp; complicatedly in American media, so this<br \/>\nweek for its 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary I\u2019ll AmericanStudy a handful of such<br \/>\nrepresentations!]<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\">On how a<br \/>\nmaritime crisis turned military conflict can be connected to the war\u2019s end, and<br \/>\nhow it should be separated from it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\">Each of<br \/>\nthe other posts in this week\u2019s series will focus on a cultural work\u2014two films,<br \/>\na musical, and a song, although not in that order so you\u2019ll have to keep<br \/>\nreading I suppose!\u2014that depicts the historical events around the end of the<br \/>\nVietnam War, but today\u2019s subject was a very real historical event in its own<br \/>\nright. On <a href=\"https:\/\/dpaa-mil.sites.crmforce.mil\/dpaaFamWebInMayaguez\">May<br \/>\n12<sup>th<\/sup>, 1975<\/a>, the American merchant ship the <i>SS Mayaguez<\/i><br \/>\nwas seized in disputed Southeast Asian waters by forces of the Khmer Rouge, the<br \/>\nCambodian junta that had taken control of that nation\u2019s government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ushmm.org\/genocide-prevention\/countries\/cambodia\/day-one\">less<br \/>\nthan a month before<\/a>\u00a0(toppling the US-supported Khmer Republic in the<br \/>\nprocess). The U.S. Marines mounted <a href=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2013\/Aug\/19\/2001329869\/-1\/-1\/0\/0709Mayaguez.pdf\">a<br \/>\nrescue operation<\/a>, retook the ship, and besieged the nearby island of Koh<br \/>\nTang where the hostages were wrongly believed to be held, but were met with intense<br \/>\nresistance by Khmer Rouge forces. After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/News-Stories\/Article\/Article\/1710391\/lessons-learned-from-1975-mayaguez-incident\/\">extensive<br \/>\nand destructive battles<\/a> with the Khmer Rouge that left dozens of Americans<br \/>\ndead and many more wounded, the Marines were evacuated on May 15; the Khmer<br \/>\nRouge would themselves <a href=\"https:\/\/ns.clementspapers.org\/briefing-books\/mayaguez-incident\">release<br \/>\nthe unharmed hostages<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\">While the<br \/>\ninitial seizure of the ship didn\u2019t necessarily have to do with the end of the<br \/>\nVietnam War a couple weeks before (the <i>Mayaguez<\/i> was <a href=\"https:\/\/kennerly.com\/blog\/four-days-of-the-mayaguez\/\">apparently much<br \/>\ncloser<\/a> to Cambodian\/Khmer-controlled waters than it should have been), it\u2019s<br \/>\nimpossible to say that the timing of the incident overall was coincidental. In<br \/>\nhis book <i><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books\/about\/The_Last_Battle.html?id=HTXC37Ce5QEC\">The<br \/>\nLast Battle: The Mayaguez Incident and the End of the Vietnam War<\/a><\/i> (2002),<br \/>\nhistorian Ralph Wetterhahn traces just how focused <a href=\"https:\/\/geraldrfordfoundation.org\/40th\/40-points-mayaguez-incident\/\">President<br \/>\nGerald Ford<\/a> and his National Security Council were on perceptions of the<br \/>\nU.S. military and America as a whole in the immediate aftermath of the withdrawal<br \/>\nof troops from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afhistory.af.mil\/FAQs\/Fact-Sheets\/Article\/458955\/1975-operation-babylift-and-frequent-wind\/\">not<br \/>\nonly South Vietnam<\/a>, but also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/this-day-in-history\/u-s-embassy-in-cambodia-evacuated\">Cambodia<\/a><br \/>\n(which had been its own evacuation operation but one closely tied to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/americanexperience\/lastdays\/firstdaysstoryproject\/slideshow\/operation-frequent-wind\/\">the<br \/>\nVietnam evacuation<\/a>). In his book <i><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.dtic.mil\/sti\/pdfs\/AD1103854.pdf\">The <span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Mayaguez<\/span> Crisis, Mission Command, and Civil-Military Relations<\/a><\/i><br \/>\n(2018), military historian Christopher Lamb quotes Vice President Nelson Rockefeller<br \/>\nas arguing, \u201cthis will be seen as a test case,\u201d and adding, \u201cI think a violent response<br \/>\nis in order.\u201d There can be no doubt that the administration saw the incident as<br \/>\na chance to rewrite the narrative of the Vietnam War\u2019s conclusion\u2014nor that the<br \/>\nrescue\u2019s failures would instead amplify those images. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\">If that\u2019s<br \/>\nhow the <i>Mayaguez<\/i> incident was perceived in its own moment, it certainly<br \/>\nhas to be part of how we remember this history. But the main reason why I<br \/>\nwanted to include this real historical event in a weeklong series focused on<br \/>\ncultural texts is that I think it\u2019s important to add that this vision of the <i>Mayaguez<\/i><br \/>\nis likewise a narrative frame, rather than an intrinsic layer to the events themselves.<br \/>\nWhile the U.S. had <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/henry-kissingers-bombing-campaign-likely-killed-hundreds-of-thousands-of-cambodians-and-set-path-for-the-ravages-of-the-khmer-rouge-209353\">attacked<br \/>\nCambodia<\/a> in the course of the Vietnam War (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2000\/04\/25\/cambodia-invasion-reminder-of-us-political-use-of-military\/\">illegally<br \/>\nattacked<\/a>, I should add), the two nations were of course in actuality<br \/>\nentirely distinct, and moreover the Khmer Rouge saw the North Vietnamese (as of<br \/>\nApril 1975 just the Vietnamese) regime as an enemy (and the two nations would in<br \/>\nfact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-29106034\">go to war<\/a> a few<br \/>\nyears later, contributing to the end of the Khmer Rouge\u2019s rule). Moreover,<br \/>\nwhile it\u2019s questionable at best whether the North Vietnamese regime were \u201cthe<br \/>\nbad guys\u201d in the Vietnam War (I\u2019d personally put <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/11\/30\/henry-kissinger-10-conflicts-countries-that-define-a-blood-stained-legacy\">Henry<br \/>\nKissinger<\/a> at the top of that list), the Khmer Rouge were quite simply one<br \/>\nof <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-pacific-10684399\">the most<br \/>\nbrutal regimes<\/a> of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century, making the U.S. conflict<br \/>\nwith them quite distinct from the morass that was the Vietnam War.
