MARIANNA MARUYAMA & HESSEL VELDMAN \u2013 SALT<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Hessel Veldman<\/em> <\/strong>has produced experimental music ever since the \u201970s. He was (and still is) a passionate advocator of DIY music and cassette culture. In recent years, he turned his focus to creating new music, such as releases with Martijn Comes <\/em>(such as Manifest Exodus<\/a>), and his solo album Ymuiden<\/a>. <\/p>\n

For Salt<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 released on cassette (as expected)<\/em><\/strong> via Stroom<\/em> \u2013 he provides subtle, almost unnoticeable (but atmosphere-defining) drones for the spoken word poetry of Marianna Maruyama. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Marianna <\/em><\/strong>has a beautiful soft voice, intimate \u2013 it feels as if you have already known her for years. She describes everyday incidents in a completely unique, personal way. About her dentist, for example, who \u2018eased my pain and caused some, too\u2019<\/em>, and \u2018no one wants to think about dentistry as being a practice of touch\u2019.<\/em>
While currently living in the Netherlands, she also recalls a long list of jobs she had when living in Tokyo \u2013 with some remarkable occupations among them: \u2018lipstick tester, wine taster, page-turner, onsen companion\u2019.<\/em> One of these jobs was recording her voice for use in an automated cooler (\u2018Press 1 for cold water\u2019)<\/em>. Remembering this job, she asks herself \u2018I wonder where my voice has gone \u2013 and to whom it has spoken\u2019. <\/em><\/p>\n

As the album progresses, the atmosphere gets somewhat more tense. In the fourth track, Are You Satisfied?, Marianna<\/em><\/strong>\u2018s <\/em>voice gets some alienating treatments, increasing the intensity. But with Not Knowing, the album closes quietly again. The music gets more uplifting than it was before, bringing this hallucinogenic album to a peaceful end.
\u2018When I let him read my poems he said they were more like thoughts. I think they can be both\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n

This album requires dedicated listening \u2013 this is not intended to be played in the background. Observations like Maruyama<\/em><\/strong>\u2018s<\/em>, spoken like this and combined with Hessel Veldman<\/em><\/strong>\u2018s<\/em> ethereal soundscapes are like dreaming with eyes wide open. <\/p>\n
