But between the annual overhauls and the smaller periodic revisions, it can be hard to keep track of the changes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If you haven\u2019t poked around, here are some tools from the past few updates that can help save you time.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-4303a47e\">Take Control<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In last fall\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/ios\/ios-18\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">iOS 18 update<\/a>, Apple redesigned its <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-is\/guide\/iphone\/iph59095ec58\/18.0\/ios\/18.0\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">iOS Control Center so it can be customized<\/a> in granular detail. Just open the Control Center, either by swiping down from the top right corner of the screen (if your phone uses <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/108411\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Face ID<\/a>) or by swiping up from the bottom (if you have a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/102528\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Touch ID<\/a> model).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Next, tap the + button in the upper-left corner of the screen. Now you can resize, rearrange or remove icons. Tap Add a Control at the bottom of the screen to select new icons from the gallery. (Some installed controls, like the Clock and the Camera, offer a handy pop-up menu of quick actions when you hold the icon down.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In iOS 18 and later, the Control Center contains multiple screens for grouping icons by category, like music or connectivity. For example, you can tap the music note on the right side of the screen to get to your music apps\u2019s playback controls and streaming speakers. And last month\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/121161\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">iOS 18.4 update<\/a> added icons for instantly streaming ambient music playlists for relaxation or focus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/android\/answer\/9083864?hl=en\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Quick Settings<\/a> on many Android devices (or <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.samsung.com\/us\/support\/answer\/ANS10002874\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Samsung Galaxy<\/a> hardware) running Android 13 or later offer a similar way for putting your favorite settings within easy reach. Swipe down from the screen\u2019s top to open Quick Settings; swipe a second time to dismiss the notifications area.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Swipe to the left to see the multiple Quick Settings screens. Tap the small pencil icon on the bottom-right corner to edit the settings. Once the screen is in edit mode, you can drag your favorite controls into position and remove those you never use.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-617cb088\">Get a Hand With Photos<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-gb\/guide\/iphone\/iph3dc593597\/ios\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">iPhone camera<\/a> software and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/camerafromgoogle\/answer\/9722610?hl=en&amp;ref_topic=9690519&amp;sjid=7968847847813077120-NA\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Google\u2019s Camera<\/a> app come with a timer function that allows you to be <em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">in<\/em> the group photos you\u2019re snapping. But for those with recent Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel phones, you can automatically start a short shutter timer countdown just by holding up the palm of your hand to the camera.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">To use the feature, go into your phone\u2019s camera settings and make sure the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.samsung.com\/us\/support\/answer\/ANS10001353\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Show Palm<\/a> (Galaxy) or <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/pixelcamera\/answer\/9937027?hl=en-GB#zippy=%2Ctake-a-hands-free-selfie%2Cstart-a-selfie-timer-with-your-hand\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Palm Timer<\/a> (Pixel) setting is enabled. When the front camera sees your face and the palm of your hand in the frame, the countdown begins.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Google\u2019s Pixel Help site <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/pixelphone\/thread\/333404495\/take-hands-free-photos-with-pixel%E2%80%99s-palm-timer?hl=en\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> last month that the Palm Timer also works with the phone\u2019s rear camera for wider group shots.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-32e720b3\">Quickly Name That Tune<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If your Android phone works with the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/websearch\/answer\/14508957?hl=en\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Circle to Search<\/a> feature, which Google began rolling out last year for searching the web with images, you can use it to research music. When you hear a song that you want to identify, summon the Circle to Search screen by pressing down on the phone\u2019s onscreen Home button (or navigation bar) and tap the music-note icon. In addition to the song\u2019s title, you get quick links to any YouTube videos of the tune, lyrics, articles and other details.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Music-recognition apps like Apple\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shazam.com\/en-us\/apps\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Shazam<\/a>, which helps the Siri assistant identify songs and is <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/118570\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">available as a Control Center icon<\/a>, and the Google Pixel\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/pixelphone\/answer\/7535326?hl=en\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Now Playing<\/a> feature can also pinpoint artists. Shazam (also available for <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.shazam.android&amp;hl=en_US\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Android<\/a>) brings up related videos and other information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/search.google\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Google app<\/a> for <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/google\/id284815942\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">iOS<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox&amp;hl=e\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Android<\/a> can detect tunes as well, with its <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/websearch\/answer\/7554088?hl=en&amp;co=GENIE.Platform%3DiOS&amp;oco=0\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Search a Song<\/a> button: Tap the microphone icon in the search bar, and then tap Search a Song on the next screen. And if you have a song stuck in your head and can\u2019t remember the name of it, Google will try to identify it if you <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/products\/search\/hum-to-search\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">sing or hum<\/a> it into the phone.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-5cb06a53\">Time-Shift Messages<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Don\u2019t want to wake someone up with a text message? <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-gb\/guide\/iphone\/iph5ae9a7be6\/ios\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">With iOS 18<\/a>, you can tap the + icon next to the text-composition box and choose Send Later from the menu. It works between users of the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/104972\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">iMessage service<\/a>, and you can schedule delivery up to 14 days in advance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Google already included the ability to schedule a message. If you <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/messages\/answer\/10456318?hl=en\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">use Google Messages<\/a>, press and hold the Send icon to select a future time. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.samsung.com\/us\/support\/answer\/ANS10001926\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Samsung Messages<\/a> can also schedule future delivery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And if you haven\u2019t used the same feature for email, just press and hold the blue send arrow <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-gb\/guide\/iphone\/iph742b6abb1\/ios\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">in the iOS Mail app<\/a> to get a delivery menu. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/mail\/answer\/9214606?hl=en&amp;co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">In the Gmail app<\/a>, write your message, then tap the three-dot menu icon in the top-right corner and choose Schedule Send.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Apple and Google regularly roll out new versions of their smartphone software with fresh and useful features.
