{"id":208526,"date":"2025-04-27T10:04:09","date_gmt":"2025-04-27T10:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/agriculture\/fats-from-fermentation-checkerspots-high-oleic-palm-alternative\/"},"modified":"2025-04-27T10:04:09","modified_gmt":"2025-04-27T10:04:09","slug":"fats-from-fermentation-checkerspots-high-oleic-palm-alternative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=208526","title":{"rendered":"Fats from fermentation: Checkerspot&#8217;s high-oleic palm alternative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>California-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.checkerspot.com\/our-platform\">Checkerspot<\/a> has developed what it claims is a world first: an algal oil closely matching the fatty acid profile and performance of high-oleic palm oil, without genetic engineering.<\/p>\n<p>While regular palm oil has a high percentage of saturated fat, high-oleic palm oil\u2014currently produced in Ecuador, Colombia and Brazil, and in high demand\u2014is a more premium product with less saturated fat.<\/p>\n<p>Checkerspot\u2019s product\u2014produced by a strain of the microalga <em>Prototheca moriformis\u2014<\/em>has 55-57% oleic acid, exceeding that of high\u2010oleic palm oil (which has around 49%), while maintaining a comparable level of palmitic acid (30\u201032%).<\/p>\n<p>Notably, it has \u201cnearly identical\u201d levels of saturated fats to high oleic palm oil, says Checkerspot, which will target applications from infant formula to cosmetics and nutraceuticals, where formulators are looking for palm-oil-free options<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As detailed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2311-5637\/11\/4\/207\">study<\/a> just published in the journal <em>Fermentation<\/em>, Checkerspot employed classical strain improvement techniques (chemical mutagenesis) to optimize the composition and enhance oil yield to almost 70% oil by dry cell weight.<\/p>\n<p>Similar results could have been achieved through genetic engineering.<em>\u00a0<\/em>However<em>, <\/em>using a non-GMO strain eases the regulatory path and broadens the potential market for the oil, says Checkerspot, which has developed multiple products from <em>Prototheca moriformis <\/em>including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20240321808643\/en\/AAK-Partners-with-Checkerspot-to-Develop-New-Sustainable-Algae-Oil\">structuring fats<\/a>, high-oleic frying oils, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20240129516518\/en\/Checkerspot-Announces-Breakthrough-with-the-Development-of-Human-Milk-Fat-Analogue-by-Fermentation-of-Microalgae\">functional lipids found in human breastmilk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The unit economics of fats from fermentation \u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The unit economics of microbial fermentation may not (yet) stack up to make \u201cdrop-in\u201d replacements for highly commoditized oils and fats, Checkerspot CEO John Krzywicki told <em>AgFunderNews<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>But they do make sense for select ingredients and applications where companies are willing to pay a premium for fats that deliver specific functionality and do not come with the ethical and environmental baggage of tropical and animal fats, he claimed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re looking at applications where there\u2019s a high value placed on the things we can uniquely provide. As an example, if you\u2019re making a product in a fermentation environment, you can get pharmaceutical grade purity and a lack of contaminants, plus you can also dial in a very specific process to ensure consistency batch after batch. So that\u2019s valuable in infant formula, nutraceuticals, pharmaceutical products, and supplements, where people have potentially more willingness to pay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cAnybody who promises they\u2019re going to replace a conventional commodity and wipe it from the face of the earth is deluding themselves, so we would never make that claim. But we\u2019re tackling several high value niches, for example, one of our projects is with AAK on tropical fat replacements and structuring fats for areas such as premium confectionery and another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20240411128223\/en\/Mara-Renewables-Partners-with-Checkerspot-to-Develop-Sustainable-Microalgae-Based-Omega-3-Alternatives-to-Fish-Oil\">partnership is with Mara Renewables<\/a> in the omega-3 space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLikewise, our OPO oil [a functional lipid found in human breast milk that Checkerspot is producing in microalgae] offers advantages over palm-based products currently used in infant formula.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The business model<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Rather than doing everything in-house, Checkerspot has a partnership and licensing-based model, said Krzywicki, who joined as CEO just over two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll do joint development agreements or other similar partnership arrangements and we\u2019re actively looking for partners who want to go through the scale up and commercialization journey with us. It\u2019s not a \u2018Field of Dreams\u2019 scenario\u2014if we build it, they will come\u2014the demand has to be there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stepping back to look at the microalgae industry more broadly, it\u2019s been on a bit of a rollercoaster ride in recent years, acknowledged Krzywicki. This is in part due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greentechmedia.com\/articles\/read\/lessons-from-the-great-algae-biofuel-bubble\">huge sums of money lost on algae biofuels,<\/a> which looked promising when oil prices peaked at $147\/barrel in mid-2008 but rapidly lost viability when they dropped to just $30\/barrel a year later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe same lessons in microalgae apply to fermentation in general: we need to <a href=\"https:\/\/agfundernews.com\/algaes-second-bloom-resiliency-and-productivity-are-key-say-experts\">focus on high value applications<\/a>, and we have to have a business that is evergreen. If your business only makes sense in the commodity boom times and not the bust, you\u2019re going to go out of out of business in the bust cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As to when oils produced via Checkerspot\u2019s tech might hit the market, he said, \u201cWe\u2019re working on self-affirmed GRAS [Generally Recognized as Safe] on everything we do with the goal of getting full GRAS [through submissions to the FDA] as soon as possible.
