Thousands of marine animals and birds have died along the Southern California coast in the United States because of a toxic algae bloom. Rescue centers and marine experts are calling the situation one of the worst they have ever seen.

The algae produce a dangerous chemical called domoic acid. When marine animals like sea lions, dolphins, whales, and birds eat contaminated fish, the toxin attacks their brain and heart. Many animals become extremely disoriented, have seizures, or die.

Rescue centers across Southern California have been overwhelmed, receiving around 100 calls daily about sick or stranded animals.

Some organizations, like the Pacific Marine Mammal Center (PMMC), said their facilities are full, and they are struggling to respond to all emergencies.

“One of the largest harmful algae blooms recorded along the Southern California coast has led to the illness and death of thousands of marine mammals and birds in recent months,” the PMMC said on Wednesday.

“This includes California sea lions, common dolphins, and now, confirmed cases in at least two whale species,” it added.

While algae blooms occur naturally, scientists say human activities have made them worse and more frequent. Pollution from agriculture, wastewater, and fertilizers adds extra nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus to the ocean, helping the algae grow faster.

Climate change, driven by human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, is also warming the ocean, creating the perfect conditions for these toxic blooms to spread.

Experts warn that unless we act quickly to reduce pollution and slow down climate change, toxic algae blooms will continue to grow in size and frequency. This will put even more marine life at risk.

The Animal Reader is an independent animal news platform based in the Netherlands.
