Directed by Jack Huston in an impressive feature debut, the film stars <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyactor.com\/tag\/michael-pitt\">Michael Pitt<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyactor.com\/tag\/steve-buscemi\">Steve Buscemi<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyactor.com\/tag\/steve-buscemi\">Joe Pesc<\/a>i<\/strong>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In this interview, Perlman discusses his long-standing friendship with Huston, the challenges of shooting the film on a demanding 20-day schedule, and how he found inspiration in Pitt\u2019s raw, unfiltered approach to his character.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-909\" data-method=\"placement-service\"\/><span data-ez-ph-id=\"909\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In this interview, Perlman discusses his long-standing friendship with Huston, the challenges of shooting the film on a demanding 20-day schedule, and how he found inspiration in Pitt\u2019s raw, unfiltered approach to his character.<\/p>\n<p>He also chats about acting and how he approached his character, and why he avoids auditions. For the full interview, watch the video above or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@DailyActor\">check out our YouTube page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you get involved in this?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ron Perlman<\/strong>: Well, Jack and I go back, we acted in a movie together, I don\u2019t know, 15 years ago, and we\u2019ve stayed friends since. And then we ran into each other just as he was getting ready to get greenlit for this. And he\u2019d written and was about to direct a movie, would I have a look?<\/p>\n<p>And I said, \u201cHave you written and directed a movie? And you\u2019re thinking about having me in it. I don\u2019t need to have a look. I\u2019m in.\u201d Because it\u2019s Jack Huston and he\u2019s one of the most beautiful souls I\u2019ve run into in this long, sordid, horrible slog of mine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What would you have done if the script stunk?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ron Perlman: <\/strong>For Jack Huston, I would have just kept my mouth shut, kept my head down and gotten through it. And a lot of really important people are saying that. <strong>Martin Scorsese<\/strong> presented the film in New York a couple of weeks ago and he said this is the best film directorial debut he\u2019d ever seen.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-912\" data-method=\"placement-service\"\/><span data-ez-ph-id=\"912\"\/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Can you tell the difference between a director who is an actor and a director who\u2019s never been on the other side of the camera?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ron Perlman<\/strong>: No, I can\u2019t. I mean, you know that that\u2019s the case, but it\u2019s not apparent. Because, especially on all the days we had to film this, which were way too few, the whole movie was made in 20 days, which is an incredibly crazy schedule.<\/p>\n<p>But, the only important thing was what the director is telling you what he needs. And then when we have a shot at executing the scenes, how we all felt about it\u2026 I didn\u2019t see an actor there. I just saw a filmmaker. And my obsession was to give him everything he needed to realize what his vision was.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-913\" data-method=\"placement-service\"\/><span data-ez-ph-id=\"913\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyactor.com\/interview\/jack-huston-day-of-the-fight\/\"><strong>Jack Huston Talks \u2018Day of the Fight\u2019: Directorial Debut, Creative Challenges, and Assembling an All-Star Cast<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>You guys are peers. So, what was your relationship with him like on set? What was his directing style towards you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ron Perlman<\/strong>: He\u2019s a fan. I mean, he\u2019s a cheerleader. Every once in a while he quotes his granddad, who happened to be, you know, the greatest of all time, John Houston, who said, \u201c90 percent of it is casting.\u201d And so he felt like he did get it right across the board. Everybody in this movie gives really, really effective, hauntingly beautiful performances. When you do that, they\u2019re going to come to the party with almost everything you need.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-914\" data-method=\"placement-service\"\/><span data-ez-ph-id=\"914\"\/><\/p>\n<p>And the only time a great director gets involved is if somebody is needing some sort of a prodding. But a great director will recognize, \u201cOh, my God, that was as good or better than what I imagined. And let\u2019s just move on.\u201d And that\u2019s the way Jack works.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You mentioned the fast shooting schedule. Do you like shooting that fast?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ron Perlman<\/strong>: I do. If you look at my resume, it\u2019s like 95 percent of it is low budget indie movies, and so that comes with the territory. There\u2019s not a lot of resources. I mean, I think <em>Hellboy<\/em>\u2018s schedule was 110 days of filming. We had 20. But I do like working fast.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-915\" data-method=\"placement-service\"\/><span data-ez-ph-id=\"915\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Having read about a lot of actors and talked to a lot of actors, it boils down to there are a lot of people who are best on the early takes and there are a lot of people who need a lot of warming up and they don\u2019t start cooking until take 12 or 13. \u00a0If I get to take 12 or 13, I\u2019m ready to put a gun in my mouth and pull the trigger until it doesn\u2019t work anymore, to quote a great Marlon Brando line.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the what\u2019s the most takes you\u2019ve done like ever, you think?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ron Perlman<\/strong>: Thirty-four.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oh, man.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ron Perlman<\/strong>: I\u2019m not going to mention the movie or the filmmaker but I wasn\u2019t wishing him well.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-916\" data-method=\"placement-service\"\/><span data-ez-ph-id=\"916\"\/><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1140\" height=\"720\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=%22http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg%22%20width=%221140%22%20height=%22720%22%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" alt=\"\" class=\"ezlazyload wp-image-187992\" style=\"aspect-ratio:16\/9;object-fit:cover\" data-ezsrcset=\"https:\/\/www.dailyactor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Ron-Perlman-in-Day-of-the-Fight.jpg 1140w, https:\/\/www.dailyactor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Ron-Perlman-in-Day-of-the-Fight-317x200.jpg 317w, https:\/\/www.dailyactor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Ron-Perlman-in-Day-of-the-Fight-600x379.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.dailyactor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Ron-Perlman-in-Day-of-the-Fight-768x485.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1140px) 100vw, 1140px\" data-ezsrc=\"https:\/\/www.dailyactor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Ron-Perlman-in-Day-of-the-Fight.jpg\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><sup>Ron Perlman in <em>Day of the Fight<\/em><\/sup><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>So, you were done after like, what, two or three takes?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ron Perlman<\/strong>: Yeah, I had what I thought I needed after two or three takes. And then everything after that was no longer my problem. It was his problem.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m also aware of the fact that when you get past where you feel like you\u2019re most spontaneous and you\u2019re most real and you\u2019re having to do it over and over and over again, you\u2019re actually relinquishing what is best in your contribution. So, when you\u2019re aware of that, it\u2019s like even more frustrating.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-917\" data-method=\"placement-service\"\/><span data-ez-ph-id=\"917\"\/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Your character, you\u2019re like the father figure to Michael Pitt\u2019s character. You guys are supposed to have known each other forever. What did you do before you started filming to forge that in your in your mind? Do you do anything like write notes in the script?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ron Perlman<\/strong>: I do on occasion, but there are certain movies where I just want to be open and raw. And watching Michael Pitt prepare for playing Irish Mike, I realized he was so open and raw and uncontrolled and that\u2019s a willful act for an actor to walk onto the set and relinquish control in the name of spontaneity and whatever it is that\u2019s coming out of you at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>I decided that that was going to be my wheelhouse. I\u2019m just going to tune into what Michael Pitt is doing and react off of him. And everything that I need to have revealed about their relationship will be revealed by just doing, by just gluing into Michael and staying there and being there for him, because I think that was the dynamic of the relationship from the get go.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-918\" data-method=\"placement-service\"\/><span data-ez-ph-id=\"918\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This kid walks into his gym. He\u2019s a troubled kid. He\u2019s got some bullsh*t happening in his home life. But the gym is a sanctuary for him and a place where he\u2019s able to bring out his best skill set. And Stevie recognized that and said, \u201cThis is something that needs nurturing and this is something that needs encouragement and some tough love at times as well to keep him on the tracks.\u201d So that was the dynamic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019ve got to ask you this or I\u2019ll regret it but what\u2019s been your worst audition ever?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ron Perlman<\/strong>: Pretty much every audition. I\u2019m a horrible auditioner.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-919\" data-method=\"placement-service\"\/><span data-ez-ph-id=\"919\"\/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Are you? I can\u2019t believe that.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ron Perlman<\/strong>: I am. Luckily, I don\u2019t audition anymore. You can easily interpret it as, \u201cwell, this guy\u2019s too arrogant to audition. He\u2019s a big star.\u201d But I just don\u2019t want to have anyone see me in that state. I\u2019m a horrible auditioner.
