{"id":206297,"date":"2025-04-26T06:31:08","date_gmt":"2025-04-26T06:31:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/aerospace\/boeing-nasa-rain-check-x-66-evolution-to-refocus-research\/"},"modified":"2025-04-26T06:31:08","modified_gmt":"2025-04-26T06:31:08","slug":"boeing-nasa-rain-check-x-66-evolution-to-refocus-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=206297","title":{"rendered":"Boeing, NASA rain-check X-66 evolution to refocus research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Boeing and NASA are to pause development of the X-66 flight demonstrator in order to focus their research on the evolution of long, thin-wing technology.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on April 25, 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aerotime.aero\/tag\/nasa\" title=\"\">NASA<\/a> announced that the pair were \u201cevaluating an updated approach\u201d to the agency\u2019s Sustainable Flight Demonstrator project.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The X-66 design incorporated extra-long, thin wings stabilized by diagonal struts, known as a Transonic Truss-Braced Wing concept, and there were high hopes that its development could lead to more efficient and sustainable aircraft.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"article-leaderboard bn-1\"\/>\n<p>However, it appears that Boeing and NASA now wish to put their energies specifically into the development of long, thin wing technology which could be used across multiple aircraft configurations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder this proposal, all aspects of the X-66 flight demonstrator\u2019s design, as well as hardware acquired or modified for it, would be retained while the long, thin-wing technology is being investigated with more focus. NASA and Boeing would also continue to collaborate on research into the transonic truss-braced wing concept,\u201d NASA said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Under the existing plan, a McDonnell Douglas MD-90 was being modified in Palmdale to test the Transonic Truss-Braced Wing with flight testing expected to commence in 2027\/28.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"article-leaderboard bn-2\"\/>\n<p>NASA said that Boeing\u2019s new proposal is based on \u201cknowledge gained through research conducted under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/armd\/iasp\/sfd\/\" title=\"\">Sustainable Flight Demonstrator project<\/a> so far\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Boeing proposal identifies the thin-wing concept as having broad applications for potential incorporation into aircraft with and without truss braces.
