That\u2019s a problem when your political playbook depends on keeping voters in the dark and rivals off-balance.<\/p>\n<p>According to multiple sources, Tuberville told a group of donors at a private event on Wednesday night that he\u2019s planning a run for governor in 2026. That tidbit spread faster than banana pudding at a Baptist potluck. In Alabama politics, secrets don\u2019t stay buried \u2014 they show up early, sit front row, and ask for sweet tea.<\/p>\n<p>So when <a href=\"https:\/\/yellowhammernews.com\/tuberville-running-for-governor-of-alabama-in-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Yellowhammer News<\/em><\/a> reported the obvious, Tuberville melted down like a plastic lawn chair in July. By Thursday morning, the whispers had turned into headlines. Then Tuberville took to Facebook \u2014 and things got weird.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile I appreciate all the interest,\u201d he wrote, \u201cSuzanne and I are still praying about how to best serve the people of Alabama. When I have an official announcement about my future, you\u2019ll hear it directly from me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Translation: I said it, I meant it, but now I\u2019m hoping you\u2019ll forget it.<\/p>\n<p>The comments rolled in. Some folks were thrilled. Others had questions. And many were just wondering why a man who seems to live in Florida keeps running for office in Alabama.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a fair question.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Under state law, a candidate for governor must reside in Alabama for seven consecutive years. Tuberville? He didn\u2019t even get an Alabama driver\u2019s license until March 28, 2019 \u2014 just a few weeks before announcing his Senate run. Until then, he was comfortably parked at his $6 million Santa Rosa Beach mansion in Florida, sipping something with an umbrella in it.<\/p>\n<p>Now he wants the keys to the Governor\u2019s Mansion?<\/p>\n<p>The bigger mystery isn\u2019t the residency \u2014 it\u2019s the rage. Why the outburst over a news story that confirmed what everyone in the room already knew?<\/p>\n<p>Political operatives have a theory. \u201cHe\u2019s bluffing,\u201d one GOP insider told APR. \u201cThis is poker. He\u2019s trying to clear the field before anyone else declares.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another source put it more bluntly: \u201cCoach doesn\u2019t like to raise money. He doesn\u2019t like to campaign. He wants the crown, not the battle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Classic Tuberville. Just vibes, Facebook posts and fundraising emails.<\/p>\n<p>But Alabama doesn\u2019t work that way. Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth is already in position, and he\u2019s not going to step aside so Tommy can jog in unopposed. This isn\u2019t the SEC \u2014 we don\u2019t do tune-up games in the primary.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Let\u2019s not forget the bigger picture. Why would Tuberville leave a cushy U.S. Senate seat where he barely shows up, rarely says anything of substance and can coast to re-election? \u201cHe\u2019s a lock in 2026,\u201d one political veteran said. \u201cAs governor, what use is he to Trump? Seriously \u2014 tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unless, of course, it\u2019s not really about serving anyone but himself.<\/p>\n<p>Did Tuberville forget to mention to President Trump that he\u2019s planning to abandon the Senate? Hard to believe he did \u2014 but if so, it\u2019s even harder to believe Trump would see that as an act of loyalty.<\/p>\n<p>Tuberville may think he\u2019s riding high as he teases a run for governor, but as one power player put it, \u201cTuberville has no idea how many enemies he is making right now.\u201d There\u2019s an old saying in politics: friends come and go, but enemies accumulate \u2014 and Tuberville, with his clumsy bluffing and thin-skinned reactions, seems determined to prove it true.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who\u2019s been around politics long enough knows: when something doesn\u2019t make sense, follow the money. A fake-out governor run drums up buzz, raises cash and freezes out potential opponents. It\u2019s not a campaign \u2014 it\u2019s a con.<\/p>\n<p>And about that whole \u201cstill praying\u201d routine?<\/p>\n<p>Please.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Everyone says they\u2019re praying, but let\u2019s be honest \u2014 at this point, even God\u2019s tired of being used as a campaign excuse.<\/p>\n<p>For those already declaring the governor\u2019s race over because Tuberville is leading in early polls, a little perspective is in order. In 2022, Katie Britt started with barely 3 percent support \u2014 and still beat Trump-endorsed Mo Brooks by a mile. In 2017, Judge Roy Moore, riding high on far-right adoration, managed to lose a U.S. Senate seat to Democrat Doug Jones. And in 2010, Bradley Byrne looked unbeatable \u2014 until Robert Bentley walked past him like he was standing still. Where are all those early favorites now? Forgotten footnotes in Alabama\u2019s political graveyard. As my old friend Jack Campbell liked to say, \u201cCock of the walk today, feather duster tomorrow.\u201d Tuberville might be leading now, but Alabama has a long memory for cocky politicians \u2014 and an even longer tradition of sending them home humbled.<\/p>\n<p>The real problem isn\u2019t <em>Yellowhammer<\/em> or leaks or timing. It\u2019s that Tuberville thinks he\u2019s playing 4D chess when he\u2019s actually fumbling the checkers.<\/p>\n<p>This wasn\u2019t a leak. It was inevitable. In Alabama politics the walls talk, the tables text, and the donors gossip like middle-schoolers.<\/p>\n<p>So go ahead, Coach. Announce. Don\u2019t. But don\u2019t act surprised when your own words beat you to the podium.
