I can tell you that we do an audit every year. I can tell the American people on camera right now that there was a report\u2014September 30th, 2024\u2014all the gold is there. Any U.S. senator who wants to come and visit can arrange a visit through our office.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Good to know, right? Except there\u2019s one problem:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>That\u2019s a big, fat lie.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, before you dismiss this as just more internet sensationalism\u2014after all, if anyone should know whether the gold is still there, it\u2019s the Treasury Secretary\u2014just hear me out\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But first, a little backstory so we\u2019re all on the same page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-we-re-supposed-to-believe\"><strong>What We\u2019re Supposed to Believe<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the\u00a0<em>U.S. Mint<\/em>, which operates under the\u00a0<em>Department of the Treasury<\/em>, the government holds roughly\u00a0<strong>274 million troy ounces<\/strong>\u00a0of gold. About\u00a0<strong>147 million troy ounces<\/strong>, or 54%, is reportedly stored at Fort Knox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a class=\"image-link image2 is-viewable-img\" href=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa671a338-c781-4fe6-8285-a636bef3931b_1677x1550.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1456\" height=\"1346\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa671a338-c781-4fe6-8285-a636bef3931b_1677x1550.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em><sup>Source: U.S. Mint<\/sup><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br\/>For the uninitiated, Fort Knox\u2014officially the\u00a0<em>U.S. Bullion Depository<\/em>\u2014is a heavily fortified vault next to the Army post of the same name in Kentucky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God knows, over the years, Fort Knox has stirred up enough skepticism to make even the most trusting minds do a double take. And when there\u2019s this much smoke, it\u2019s only natural to wonder about fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Theories abound. Some say President Lyndon B. Johnson shipped tons of gold to London in the 1960s. Others believe large amounts were leased out to foreign entities or banks, turning Fort Knox into an empty shell\u2014a symbolic confidence game meant to uphold faith in the dollar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then there\u2019s the most unsettling version: maybe the gold is still there\u2026 but it\u2019s not ours. According to this theory, much of the gold is foreign-owned\u2014deposited here during\u00a0<em>WWII<\/em>\u00a0and never reclaimed, with the U.S. quietly acting as custodian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, you might ask: why do these rumors keep coming back?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simple. Because\u00a0<strong>there hasn\u2019t been a proper audit of Fort Knox in decades.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-so-about-that-2024-audit\"><strong>So\u2026 About That 2024 \u201cAudit\u201d<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, of course, disagrees. As you saw in the video above, he insists the gold at Fort Knox is audited every year\u2014and points to a report dated September 30th, 2024, as the latest example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what\u2019s actually going on?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, let\u2019s take a look at the document he\u2019s referring to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a class=\"image-link image2 is-viewable-img\" href=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F37166905-f312-463e-b53f-db3cc36ec13c_1344x1374.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1344\" height=\"1374\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F37166905-f312-463e-b53f-db3cc36ec13c_1344x1374.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em><sup>Source: U.S. Department of the Treasury<\/sup><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br\/>Here\u2019s what the auditors actually wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>The Department of Treasury schedules of gold reserves as of September 30th of 2024\u2014we found that the Treasury schedules of US gold reserves are presented fairly.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Translation? They reviewed the\u00a0<em>schedules<\/em>\u00a0of gold reserves\u2014not the gold itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let that sink in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They didn\u2019t inspect, weigh, or test a single bar at Fort Knox. They reviewed a spreadsheet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that spreadsheet? It\u2019s essentially this, from page 8 of the report:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a class=\"image-link image2 is-viewable-img\" href=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d2d2352-1a5a-4205-bc7d-3d68aa514a66_1200x528.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"528\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4d2d2352-1a5a-4205-bc7d-3d68aa514a66_1200x528.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em><sup>Source: U.S. Department of the Treasury<\/sup><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br\/>This isn\u2019t an audit of the physical gold. It\u2019s an\u00a0<strong>accounting exercise<\/strong>\u2014a restatement of what the Treasury already has on the books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, the whole thing becomes even more meaningless when you realize the official \u201cbook value\u201d of U.S. gold hasn\u2019t changed since 1973. It\u2019s still marked at\u00a0<strong>$42.22 per ounce<\/strong>\u2014which, as I explained in a previous\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.crisisinvesting.com\/p\/the-great-revaluation?utm_source=publication-search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">piece<\/a>, is the outdated statutory price the Treasury still uses. That\u2019s why the numbers haven\u2019t budged from 2023 to 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s not to say this was a demanding task. The entire report runs just 20 pages\u2014table of contents, a few summary tables, and some boilerplate language. That\u2019s it. Nothing\u00a0<em>ChatGPT<\/em>\u00a0couldn\u2019t crank out in a few minutes. If you want to examine it for yourself, I\u2019ve included a link [<a href=\"https:\/\/oig.treasury.gov\/system\/files\/2024-11\/OIG-25-003.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this is the report that Scott Bessent points to as evidence of an \u201cannual audit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I have to ask: Why is the Treasury Secretary trying to pass this off as a real audit?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because it\u2019s not. Not even close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-an-actual-audit-would-look-like\"><strong>What an Actual Audit Would Look Like<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s say, just for fun, we wanted to actually audit the gold at Fort Knox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what we\u2019d be up against:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There are\u00a0<strong>368,250 gold bars<\/strong>\u00a0reportedly stored at Fort Knox.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each bar weighs about\u00a0<strong>27.4 pounds<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The gold is housed in\u00a0<strong>13 small compartments<\/strong>, each roughly 6 feet wide, 12 feet deep, and 8 feet high.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, there\u2019s\u00a0<strong>no room for forklifts or large teams<\/strong>\u2014the space was intentionally designed to be cramped for security reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So any real audit would require a small team\u2014let\u2019s say 20 people\u2014working in tight quarters to verify every single bar. That\u2019s\u00a0<strong>18,412 gold bars per person<\/strong>. And each bar would need to be counted, weighed, and visually inspected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts estimate it would take\u00a0<strong>at least 18 months<\/strong>\u00a0to complete. Possibly longer if any discrepancies are found (which would require re-checking, paperwork, and verification).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bessent\u2019s 2024 \u201caudit\u201d? None of this happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They didn\u2019t audit the gold. They audited a\u00a0<strong>schedule<\/strong>\u2014a glorified Excel sheet pulled from the Treasury\u2019s own database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, in case you\u2019re wondering, the last true inspection of the Fort Knox gold was back in 1953, under President Eisenhower. Even that was just a spot check\u2014only 5\u20137% of the gold was actually examined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was also a notable photo-op in 1974, when the Treasury opened Fort Knox to about 100 journalists and members of\u00a0<em>Congress<\/em>\u00a0following rumors the vault was empty. Cameras rolled, gold bars were displayed, and everyone left with a souvenir sound bite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But nothing was weighed. Nothing was assayed. No serial numbers were matched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One radio reporter summed it up best:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>All I can say is that I saw gold in there.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>That same year, the Treasury and the\u00a0<em>Government Accountability Office<\/em>\u00a0(GAO) launched what they called a \u201ccontinuing audit program.\u201d From 1975 to 1981, they conducted annual reviews of small portions of the gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 1981, they claimed no discrepancies had been found. But even then, only about 80% of the gold was reportedly verified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After that? The audits quietly stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So when people are skeptical about whether the gold is still there, or whether it even belongs to us anymore\u2014you know what?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>They have every right to be.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And when the Treasury Secretary goes on national media and tries to spin an internal schedule review as a full-blown audit?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That only fuels the suspicion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know it does for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regards,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lau Vegys<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>P.S.\u00a0<\/strong>Now, with both President Trump and Elon Musk publicly calling for an audit of Fort Knox, it might actually happen this time\u2014and that would be a good thing.
