{"id":20474,"date":"2025-01-10T00:32:13","date_gmt":"2025-01-10T00:32:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/arborist\/why-accreditation-matters-devos-tree-care\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T00:32:13","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T00:32:13","slug":"why-accreditation-matters-devos-tree-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=20474","title":{"rendered":"Why Accreditation Matters | DeVos Tree Care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Imagine if an electrician was working at your home.\u00a0\u00a0Imagine if they said, \u201c<em><strong>I feel like<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0we should use XYZ wire for your stove and<strong>\u00a0<em>I feel like<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0we should place the box for the wire in XYZ location, and\u00a0<em><strong>I feel like<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0we could get away with attaching it to the same circuit as your kitchen lights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This sounds a little bit dangerous.\u00a0\u00a0After all, don\u2019t electricians have a code book which outlines what they can and can\u2019t do.\u00a0\u00a0What if the electrician screws up?\u00a0\u00a0It might work in the short term but what about down the road.\u00a0\u00a0What kinds of problems could arise?\u00a0\u00a0At best, your stove doesn\u2019t work.\u00a0\u00a0At worse, a house fire could occur.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The way electricians\u00a0<em><strong>prevent situations like this by having a code book<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0they follow which outlines all the potential electrical scenarios and how to appropriately address them.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Do Arborists Do It?<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/devostree.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/devos-tree-care-accredited.jpg\" alt=\"DeVos Tree Care TCIA Accredited\" class=\"wp-image-2230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/devostree.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/devos-tree-care-accredited.jpg 800w, https:\/\/devostree.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/devos-tree-care-accredited-480x480.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 800px, 100vw\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Here in Ontario, there is\u00a0<strong><em>no code book by which arborists must follow<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0to carry out their work.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some municipalities may self impose some standards but by and large the aforementioned comment still stands.<\/p>\n<p>But there are standards in the tree industry.\u00a0\u00a0In our industry, the<strong>\u00a0<em>gold standard for safety is called ANSI Z133\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>and the<strong><em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/treecareindustryassociation.org\/business-support\/ansi-a300-standards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gold standard for tree care practices is called ANSI A300<\/a><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(these are U.S. standards as we don\u2019t have as clear and comprehensive set of standards for either category here in Canada). Together these standards outline all the potential scenarios that a <a href=\"https:\/\/devostree.ca\/\">tree service<\/a> may face so that they can make the most appropriate decision.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does Accreditation Play Into Safety?<\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s say a crew shows up to your house to work on a few trees.\u00a0\u00a0That will usually consist of somewhere between 2 and 4 people.\u00a0\u00a0Of those 2 to 4 people,\u00a0<em><strong>who can work on your tree?\u00a0The truth is \u2014\u00a0any one of them.<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0\u00a0They can even do so without the supervision of the other crew members.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>None of them have to be well versed in safety standards or tree care standards.\u00a0\u00a0The<strong>\u00a0<em>only regulation<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is that\u00a0<em><strong>all members of the crew wear proper safety equipment.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>There are regulations pertaining to working around hydro but in most situations this regulation is not applicable.<\/p>\n<p>Even though wearing proper safety equipment is regulated, there is\u00a0<strong><em>no regulation<\/em><\/strong> outlining that the <strong>work be done in a\u00a0<em>safe and proper manner<\/em><\/strong><em>.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0A worker could climb up the tree wearing all the proper protective equipment and still do their work unsafely.\u00a0\u00a0They could tie themselves off with a rope to a branch, one that a properly trained arborists may deem unsafe, but there are no rules to state otherwise.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They could even cut off a branch that could make the tree far less healthy, and still there is no regulation that restricts such actions.<\/p>\n<p>And we wonder why tree work is considered one of the most dangerous professions in all of North America.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Questions Regarding Risks<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/devostree.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/devos-tree-care-accrediited.jpg\" alt=\"DeVos Tree Care Accredited\" class=\"wp-image-2229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/devostree.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/devos-tree-care-accrediited.jpg 800w, https:\/\/devostree.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/devos-tree-care-accrediited-480x480.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 800px, 100vw\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>To reduce these potential risks, hopefully the person working on the tree is an \u201cISA Certified Arborist\u201d or has been through post secondary education for arboriculture.\u00a0\u00a0But once again, this isn\u2019t a requirement.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the ideal world, every member of the tree service company would be an ISA Certified Arborist from the receptionist, to the consulting arborist, to the crew lead, to even the ground worker cleaning up the branches; but quite often this just isn\u2019t feasible.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Enter The World of Accreditation<\/h2>\n<p>Accreditation ensures that\u00a0<em><strong>every staff person<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0working for a tree company\u00a0<em><strong>subscribes to the highest standards of tree work.<\/strong><\/em><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Accreditation exists in the absence of industry regulations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Our work is dangerous.\u00a0\u00a0Our work is also important.\u00a0\u00a0When done well, we can prevent major disasters from occurring.\u00a0\u00a0We can also help ensure trees live for generations to come.\u00a0\u00a0When done poorly, trees die prematurely.\u00a0\u00a0Or they fail and cause potentially irreversible damage to persons and property.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Important work deserves high standards of care.<\/h2>\n<p>Accreditation is an avenue that we at <a href=\"https:\/\/devostree.ca\/\">DeVos Tree Care<\/a> take to ensure that we are living according to these high standards.\u00a0\u00a0It is the work of the accrediting body that our \u201cfeet are held to the fire\u201d so that we follow through.<\/p>\n<p>Want to work with an accredited company.
