{"id":204526,"date":"2025-04-25T10:06:29","date_gmt":"2025-04-25T10:06:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/business\/finance\/china-grants-some-tariff-exemptions-for-us-imports-as-trade-war-bites\/"},"modified":"2025-04-25T10:06:29","modified_gmt":"2025-04-25T10:06:29","slug":"china-grants-some-tariff-exemptions-for-us-imports-as-trade-war-bites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=204526","title":{"rendered":"China grants some tariff exemptions for US imports as trade war bites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=b3bfe704-c6b9-4bbd-9525-2144c979d757\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>China has granted some tariff exemptions on American imports and is considering lifting other duties, according to the local US business lobby group, in a possible sign of relief for companies hit by Donald Trump\u2019s trade war.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s ministry of commerce is reviewing sectors affected by Beijing\u2019s 125 per cent tariffs on US goods, Michael Hart, American Chamber of Commerce in China president, said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Hart said that healthcare imports to China were under review for possible tariff exemptions. <\/p>\n<p>Companies in sectors including aviation and industrial chemicals said that some of their products had already been granted a reprieve, while local media reported that some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/semiconductors\" data-trackable=\"link\">semiconductors<\/a> had been spared tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>Hart added that the US commerce department was also reviewing the impact of the duties on companies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s good to see that both sides are reviewing the tariffs and it looks like they\u2019re starting to produce lists of exclusions for specific categories,\u201d Hart said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s commerce ministry did not respond to a request for comment on the tariff exemptions. China\u2019s foreign ministry said it was not familiar with any exemptions and reiterated that there had been no direct talks with the US on reducing levies.<\/p>\n<p>US President Donald Trump has already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3eb48a07-7cb0-4a44-9159-eb5b402c2fec\" data-trackable=\"link\">excluded high-value Chinese goods<\/a> such as smartphones and electronics from his tariffs of up to 145 per cent, though he later clarified that those exemptions would be temporary.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing\u2019s retaliatory levies of 125 per cent have hit American agricultural goods and energy.<\/p>\n<p>Hart said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/china\" data-trackable=\"link\">China<\/a>\u2019s commerce ministry had met representatives from the chamber and its member companies to determine the fallout from the tit-for-tat tariffs. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur member companies have reported that even within the last week, they had a few shipments that were imported that did not have tariffs levied on them,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I think for the critical sectors, we may be able to assume that that\u2019s already in place, but I don\u2019t think it\u2019s a specific policy. I think right now it\u2019s more of a one-off.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>French aerospace engine maker Safran also said on Friday that China had granted some import tariff exemptions. Chief executive Olivier Andri\u00e8s said on an earnings call that \u201cChina decided to exempt from tax any deliveries of engines, nacelles, landing gear or parts\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Hart also identified pharmaceuticals and medical devices as industries that were potentially vulnerable, given their high levels of imports. <\/p>\n<p>If the tariffs remained in place at the current levels, he said, \u201cit would be hard to imagine that we wouldn\u2019t see some companies close and leave\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The efforts by both sides to mitigate the worst effects of a looming trade war come as Trump has insisted \u2014 despite Chinese denials \u2014 that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/475d61e6-0d9a-43a6-86b6-9248f455451e\" data-trackable=\"link\">negotiations are under way<\/a> and the levies will soon be reduced.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s commerce ministry on Thursday called on Washington to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3e076fb5-3988-4e21-9119-3fc637afebb8\" data-trackable=\"link\">cancel all unilateral tariff measures<\/a>\u201d if it wanted to begin trade talks.<\/p>\n<p>Economists have warned that bilateral trade in some sectors is at risk of coming to a halt, with the current level of tariffs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/706b6281-1077-40b8-ad40-e11ee0f55f92\" data-trackable=\"link\">making US imports unviable<\/a> for many Chinese businesses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside aria-labelledby=\"aside-label\" class=\"n-content-recommended--single-story n-content-recommended--inset\" data-component=\"recommended\">\n<p class=\"n-content-recommended__title\">Recommended<\/p>\n<div class=\"o-teaser o-teaser--article o-teaser--small o-teaser--stacked o-teaser--has-image js-teaser\" data-id=\"31402296-753c-4fa9-b5bb-0c8c25ccff04\">\n<div class=\"o-teaser__image-container js-teaser-image-container\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/31402296-753c-4fa9-b5bb-0c8c25ccff04\" data-trackable=\"image-link\" data-trackable-context-story-link=\"image-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"o-teaser__image-placeholder\" style=\"aspect-ratio:2048\/1152\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"o-teaser__image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ft.com%2F__origami%2Fservice%2Fimage%2Fv2%2Fimages%2Fraw%2Fhttps%253A%252F%252Fd1e00ek4ebabms.cloudfront.net%252Fproduction%252Fb370531f-20d7-4468-8a4c-8d59089d9114.jpg%3Fsource%3Dnext-article%26fit%3Dscale-down%26quality%3Dhighest%26width%3D700%26dpr%3D1?source=next&amp;fit=scale-down&amp;dpr=2&amp;width=240\" alt=\"MRI scanner, glucose monitor and other blood sugar testing devices, surgical gown, brain scan\"\/><\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Friday Beijing had to \u201cfully prepare emergency plans\u201d to boost the economy at a meeting of the Communist party\u2019s 24-member politburo on Friday. <\/p>\n<p>Xi called on the government to increase support to businesses, accelerate efforts to boost consumption and more quickly resolve a years-long downturn in the property sector.<\/p>\n<p>Officials should \u201cco-ordinate domestic economic work and international economic and trade struggles\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p><em>Additional reporting by Ian Johnston in Paris<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.
