The key from the production standpoint is to treat the grapes gently \u2014 the best don\u2019t try to make a powerful, tannic wine or load it up with oak. At its finest it\u2019s graceful yet intense, more pinot noir than cabernet sauvignon. Great producers abound in astern Austria \u2014 look for <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/winemonger.com\/collections\/moric?srsltid=AfmBOooTWlzr_y7Io5VfRbVtsblY4q554aszcrx__N1wHMW6-0Dt9nV4\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Moric<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/zrswines.com\/wine-producer\/meinklang\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Meinklang<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gutoggau.com\/en\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Gut Oggau<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/markusaltenburger.com\/en_GB\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Markus Altenburger<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/zrswines.com\/wine-producer\/weingutt-heinrich\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Heinrich<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/zrswines.com\/wine-producer\/judith-beck\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Judith Beck<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/winemonger.com\/collections\/rosi-schuster?srsltid=AfmBOoqExzuvq3NkJnifz4O2Sa3gsbtr4-6XvSfqkpo0wKcXwgAqgHUu\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Rosi Schuster<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/winemonger.com\/collections\/straka?srsltid=AfmBOoq7UHFQ9GsnCQgnb4TTesFjQKgVQ1rHj9cEZNPu7chxNpH6FtO_\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Straka<\/a> in Burgenland and Dorli Muhr in Carnuntum. From time to time, I see blaufr\u00e4nkisch from elsewhere, like Germany, where it\u2019s often called Lemberger, and the Finger Lakes of New York, where <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/redtailridgewinery.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Red Tail Ridge<\/a> makes an excellent version.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-2c42f654\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Carignan<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For years, carignan was maligned as incapable of producing good wines. But, as has often been the case, when farmed with care and made with intent, poor old carignan demonstrates how good it can be. It\u2019s a Mediterranean grape and was once ubiquitous in southern France and Catalonia in Spain, but I\u2019ve grown to admire the carignans of California. Often, it\u2019s part of a blend, including California\u2019s classic old field blends. But I see it increasingly as a varietal wine. Among the producers whose carignans I\u2019ve enjoyed are <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/portercreekvineyards.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Porter Creek<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/sandlandsvineyards.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Sandlands<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liocowine.com\/?srsltid=AfmBOorEH5orBvSlS-kexTwZfty19we8HToKqdIr5Vq7z-iEYHxP1Ew2\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Lioco<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ridgewine.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Ridge<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/broccellars.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Broc Cellars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-4877dee7\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Carricante<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Like assyrtiko, carricante, the foremost <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/07\/20\/dining\/mount-etna-wine-sicily.html\" title=\"\">white grape of the Mount Etna<\/a> region of Sicily, is a saline treat. But where the salinity is subtext in assyrtiko, carricante is for salt fiends. Count me in. The wines, generally labeled Etna Bianco, range from simple and refreshing to among Italy\u2019s finest whites. They are dry and herbal with that salty edge leading the way. The Etna producers will say the saltiness blows in off the Mediterranean. I won\u2019t argue the point, I just love the wines. Some of the best producers include <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.benanti.it\/en\/wines\/#\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Benanti<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ivigneri.it\/en\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">I Vigneri (Salvo Foti)<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ibiondi.com\/about\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Ciro Biondi<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/massanois.com\/brand\/graci\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Graci<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/jandamorewines.com\/product-category\/sicilia\/federico-curtaz\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Federico Curtaz<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tenutaterrenere.com\/en\/home-english\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Tenuta Delle Terre Nere<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.palmentocostanzo.com\/en\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Palmento Costanzo<\/a>. Kevin Harvey of Rhys Vineyards in California was so impressed with carricante and other Sicilian varieties that he planted a vineyard in northern Sonoma County. His <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/cmvineyard.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Centennial Mountain<\/a> carricante is excellent.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-74a5cdaa\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Cinsault<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Like carignan, with which cinsault was often blended, this red grape is from southern France and the Mediterranean, and like carignan, it\u2019s often been derided and dismissed. Luckily, it\u2019s had its proponents like Randall Grahm, late of Bonny Doon and now of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.popelouchum.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Popelouchum<\/a>, who believes in its untapped elegance, and the winemakers of the Itata Valley in Chile, who\u2019ve proved the elegance is there. Chilean producers like <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brazoswine.com\/winery\/rogue-vine\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Rogue Vine<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skurnik.com\/producer\/pedro-parra-y-familia\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Pedro Parra<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cntraveller.com\/article\/chile-leonardo-erazo-locals-guide\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Leonardo Erazo<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"http:\/\/www.josepastorselections.com\/gustavo-riffo.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Gustavo Riffo<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/thesourceimports.com\/producers\/a-los-vinateros-bravos\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">A Los Vi\u00f1ateros Bravos<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/demartino.cl\/en\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">De Martino<\/a> have made lovely, elegant cinsaults, primarily from old vineyards planted on granite soils.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-3134d9\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Fiano<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">I wrote about fiano, an excellent white grape from the Campania region of Italy, early on, just as the region was emerging in the early 2000s with stellar wines. I promptly moved onto other things and am only now rediscovering it. A 2022 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.polanerselections.com\/producers\/ciro-picariello\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Ciro Picariello<\/a> from the Avellino region of Campania did the trick. I can\u2019t think of the last white wine I had that tasted so thoroughly of almonds. It was also textured, refreshing and delicious, and it reminded me that I had loved fiano and could again. Other producers to try include <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rarewineco.com\/producer\/mastroberardino\/?srsltid=AfmBOoqPvvI0WW_mDowrpZD9v-W4p2Hqor0uEWGV5_sr_IbzXObgir4S\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Mastroberardino<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skurnik.com\/producer\/clelia-romano\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Colli di Lapio-Clelia<\/a> Romano, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/louisdressner.com\/producers\/cantina%20giardino\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Cantina Giardino<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/panebiancowines.com\/wineries\/campania\/pietracupa\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Pietracupa<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.terredora.com\/en\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Terredora di Paolo<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cantinecaggiano.it\/en\/azienda_agricola_cantine_caggiano_taurasi\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Antonio Caggiano<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.villaraiano.com\/en\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Villa Raiano<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Blaufr\u00e4nkisch This is a wonderful grape capable of making wines that range from simply delicious to profound and contemplative.
