Yet, up until the <b>mid-1980s,<\/b><br \/>\nnational brewer <b>Whitbread<\/b> had a substantial plant in the village, on a site overlooking<br \/>\nthe <b>Medway.<\/b> This rather attractive, and typical <b>19<sup>th<\/sup> Century,<\/b> tower<br \/>\nbrewery, was known as the <b>Phoenix Brewery<\/b>, and was home to <b>Frederick Leney &amp; Sons. <\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEj8tREX6sik0Y8bWp9zW2BR2LL5Lbm6vzQJ7paLfPS5a_fWMYyM91vNO3l3gisngXATcDx3oj1Q9EbQcud3YP8zu0yD44DzD7wZ2oxjwQvjB_s0rRr7_NDjlYcaayjoFeHZi6kjpUixmr2ibvZI8PDjj3rwsmH_zou2HUj02wwxcd7SkokmhHfs9fEhLu4\/s734\/Jude%20Hanbury.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"734\" data-original-width=\"558\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEj8tREX6sik0Y8bWp9zW2BR2LL5Lbm6vzQJ7paLfPS5a_fWMYyM91vNO3l3gisngXATcDx3oj1Q9EbQcud3YP8zu0yD44DzD7wZ2oxjwQvjB_s0rRr7_NDjlYcaayjoFeHZi6kjpUixmr2ibvZI8PDjj3rwsmH_zou2HUj02wwxcd7SkokmhHfs9fEhLu4\/w304-h400\/Jude%20Hanbury.jpg\" width=\"304\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><b>Whitbread <\/b>acquired the business as well as<br \/>\nthe site in <b>1927<\/b>, as part of their initial expansion from their <b>London<\/b> home but<br \/>\n<b>Wateringbury<\/b> continued brewing <b>Leney\u2019s<\/b> ales for local pubs, until <b>1961 <\/b>when the<br \/>\nlicensed premises were sold to <b>Fremlin\u2019s<\/b> of <b>Maidstone.<\/b> The latter company joined<br \/>\nthe <b>Whitbread<\/b> group in <b>1967<\/b> and the day-to-day running of the <b>Wateringbury<\/b><br \/>\nbrewery was then integrated into their <b>Maidstone<\/b> operation. Until fairly<br \/>\nrecently you could sometimes see the name of <b>Frederick Leney<\/b> etched into the windows<br \/>\nof local pubs. The other <b>Wateringbury<\/b> brewery was that of <b>Jude,<br \/>\nHanbury &amp; Co Ltd<\/b>, who moved to<b> Canterbury<\/b> in <b>1924 <\/b>after acquiring the<br \/>\nbusiness of <b>Ash &amp; Co.<\/b> Their brewery in <b>Bow Road,<\/b> was sold to the <b>Yalding<br \/>\nSoap Co<\/b>. and was later demolished.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEhX-iOHLw_BKH_JLjrMFv7FuPbsJCRMx7EXU9sAF7yc-xNW1jUger1U8xT3oWdvhMnOPm3NOlki6PTb32OPNWPGWsdiXKHcanMXzLNDBYXUK23jYYlvKPfq4AdUmjzoasVw6LGcAOQ4FFOTf-gV_5fIWsFOrc-ZAnHsiypF04T4_u9LfcgnMkDHBwsE-O0\/s1600\/Fremlins%20Gatehouse.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1216\" data-original-width=\"1600\" height=\"304\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEhX-iOHLw_BKH_JLjrMFv7FuPbsJCRMx7EXU9sAF7yc-xNW1jUger1U8xT3oWdvhMnOPm3NOlki6PTb32OPNWPGWsdiXKHcanMXzLNDBYXUK23jYYlvKPfq4AdUmjzoasVw6LGcAOQ4FFOTf-gV_5fIWsFOrc-ZAnHsiypF04T4_u9LfcgnMkDHBwsE-O0\/w400-h304\/Fremlins%20Gatehouse.jpg\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Production at the <b>Phoenix Brewery,<\/b> was then switched to<br \/>\nbrewing mainly bottled beers for the <b>Whitbread <\/b>group. Before its closure in<b><br \/>\n1984<\/b>, beers such as light ale, and <b>Gold Label<\/b> barley wine were brewed at<br \/>\n<b>Wateringbury, <\/b>although it\u2019s interesting to note that this famed barley wine, started life as<br \/>\na <b>Sheffield <\/b>beer. Developed originally by <b>Tennant&#8217;s<\/b> in <b>1951,<\/b> it was a <span style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: small;\">pale-coloured, sparkling barley wine of great<br \/>\nstrength,<\/span> containing around <b>10.6% <\/b>alcohol. Its golden colour was<br \/>\nunusual, because the vast majority of high strength beers tended to be on the<br \/>\ndark side, including <b>Whitbread\u2019s <\/b>own <b>Final Selection<\/b> barley wine. The latter<br \/>\nbrew was replaced by <b>Gold Label,<\/b> which ended up being brewed elsewhere within<br \/>\nthe group, when <b>Wateringbury<\/b> ceased production. I\u2019m assuming the beer is still<br \/>\navailable, although the advertising slogan used to sell<b> <\/b>it, <b><i>\u201cStrong as a double<br \/>\nScotch, less than half the price,\u201d <\/i><\/b>has long disappeared.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEg6xr8lABINTfR0QxkeWNOWuU-oABUuxxqKOqKZacYHGl8smVbeVZlZkOR7lEU3TX1zUEaxffkzJLOIvUM1YrVHDgYFg93m1S0p_UgKtlj9YuImb0MAIyAQ4MTge8FZ80h1_m6hpItR-1qmpP1ID4xRTJ7D85mwTFvXNQgrDEVayGGMIlVIYpjd4O0pQYQ\/s1070\/Leney_wateringbury1951.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"468\" data-original-width=\"1070\" height=\"175\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEg6xr8lABINTfR0QxkeWNOWuU-oABUuxxqKOqKZacYHGl8smVbeVZlZkOR7lEU3TX1zUEaxffkzJLOIvUM1YrVHDgYFg93m1S0p_UgKtlj9YuImb0MAIyAQ4MTge8FZ80h1_m6hpItR-1qmpP1ID4xRTJ7D85mwTFvXNQgrDEVayGGMIlVIYpjd4O0pQYQ\/w400-h175\/Leney_wateringbury1951.jpg\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Following closure,<br \/>\nthe attractive brewery buildings at <b>Wateringbury<\/b> were pulled down, and all that<br \/>\nremains of this once thriving local enterprise is the <b>Phoenix weather-vane <\/b>atop<br \/>\nof the nearby <b>Wateringbury Hotel,<\/b> which although now owned by <b>Greene King<\/b>, operates<br \/>\nunder the <b>Chef &amp; Brewer <\/b>banner along with the adjoining <b>Premier Inn.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEh1WOCm9xYZ3M9p5Oq5kuAnf7PDp3p6dADoStQ0s5Mk_b1EHLUOF6IrdU9GRulF1ZiyohEz68CgmaUdaggRvG_6dQpL_-r-qJtp-kSTQLhAeVI87gLdAdwehrAayWWTFa3k0FawijvT0pfq30y043_f3mSuq3j4O3IA34P8kWLhIJPok-jgrIgwI_RDYnk\/s1000\/ARP%20Helmet.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"609\" data-original-width=\"1000\" height=\"244\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEh1WOCm9xYZ3M9p5Oq5kuAnf7PDp3p6dADoStQ0s5Mk_b1EHLUOF6IrdU9GRulF1ZiyohEz68CgmaUdaggRvG_6dQpL_-r-qJtp-kSTQLhAeVI87gLdAdwehrAayWWTFa3k0FawijvT0pfq30y043_f3mSuq3j4O3IA34P8kWLhIJPok-jgrIgwI_RDYnk\/w400-h244\/ARP%20Helmet.jpg\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b>There\u2019s<br \/>\na bit of family history here, because the youngest of my two sisters, bought<br \/>\none of the houses on the former <b>Phoenix<\/b> site, and lived there for a while with<br \/>\nher family, during the <b>mid-90\u2019s.<\/b> Of slightly more interest, as well as<br \/>\nrelevance, is the story that a friend and I hopped over the fence, one weekend,<br \/>\nwhilst demolition of the brewery was in its initial stages. Despite the fact we<br \/>\nwere trespassing, and that parts of the site were potentially unsafe, we had a good<br \/>\nlook around. My friend ended up with a <b>World War II ARP,<\/b> steel helmet and I uncovered<br \/>\nan old wooden beer crate. As is often the case when enterprises are closed down,<br \/>\na lot of seemingly worthless objects are just abandoned. Potentially there<br \/>\nmight have items, such as brewing logs, which would have been of interest to<br \/>\nbrewery historians, although somehow apart from my friend\u2019s steel helmet, I<br \/>\ndon\u2019t think there was much else of value remaining on the site.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEhC4TNr18Sr-RJF-5pOVWROdSR9kirth2xatLJldIv1laFFkVo6SAxpEsbdMnS5OBxBc6G1A07LeBUQvBSznYJt8ro5HSWsyx4gWetNWsz40E_Zq4B67OTp2e2mYLtwUoJLFm_qFxABeVpWIRnsS5y_ZuUIhunrzOFwT62Mke7JeAS4eVqYsQ8xG0cPxAc\/s3211\/Railway%20Wateringbury.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1909\" data-original-width=\"3211\" height=\"238\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEhC4TNr18Sr-RJF-5pOVWROdSR9kirth2xatLJldIv1laFFkVo6SAxpEsbdMnS5OBxBc6G1A07LeBUQvBSznYJt8ro5HSWsyx4gWetNWsz40E_Zq4B67OTp2e2mYLtwUoJLFm_qFxABeVpWIRnsS5y_ZuUIhunrzOFwT62Mke7JeAS4eVqYsQ8xG0cPxAc\/w400-h238\/Railway%20Wateringbury.jpg\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>In common with many other towns and villages, <b>Wateringbury<\/b> would<br \/>\nat one time, have been well supplied with public houses, especially as it was a<br \/>\nsettlement with two thriving breweries. Sadly, nearly all of them have disappeared,<br \/>\neither having been converted either for residential use, or demolished<br \/>\naltogether. One such remaining survivor is the <b>Railway,<\/b> a white-painted late\u00a0<b>19<sup>th<\/sup><\/b> <b>Century<\/b> pub at the bottom of the hill, opposite <b>Wateringbury station.<\/b><br \/>\nThe pub is almost in the neighbouring village of <b>Nettlestead<\/b>, but that\u2019s one<br \/>\nfor the pedants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEj08ltFWdKt2yaIfhY6tNyTq6VjAObsXE-ppy1gwf_WMvij0qvmUmXRZ5aBHikVjrEd8HvBFIxfIVznqeUj8Qp-a_Vwqran5y3jfsaiMuw9s3hgTi2iVPJ3otBeqxq9ILDQW1Db_hxzxCtKBNZEZqcNYXAZQinyCRee4hlMFlfwRvUoUMRNjLgv7oeBYew\/s1024\/DSC00571.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"768\" data-original-width=\"1024\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEj08ltFWdKt2yaIfhY6tNyTq6VjAObsXE-ppy1gwf_WMvij0qvmUmXRZ5aBHikVjrEd8HvBFIxfIVznqeUj8Qp-a_Vwqran5y3jfsaiMuw9s3hgTi2iVPJ3otBeqxq9ILDQW1Db_hxzxCtKBNZEZqcNYXAZQinyCRee4hlMFlfwRvUoUMRNjLgv7oeBYew\/w400-h300\/DSC00571.JPG\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>From memory, I\u2019d only made one previous visit to the <b>Railway,<\/b><br \/>\nand that was around 20 years ago, at the end of one of <b>Maidstone CAMRA\u2019s<\/b>,<br \/>\nannual G<b>ood Friday rambles.<\/b> As is often the case over <b>Easter<\/b>, that particular<br \/>\n<b>Good Friday<\/b> was characterised by freezing cold conditions, and it might even<br \/>\nhave snowed. A friend and I dived into the <b>Railway,<\/b> whilst waiting for our<br \/>\ntrain back to <b>Tonbridge<\/b>, and whilst I remember precious little from that visit,<br \/>\nthe pub certainly provided a warm and very welcome respite from the Arctic<br \/>\nconditions outside. And there, the story might have ended, if <b>Matthew<\/b> hadn\u2019t<br \/>\nnoticed a social media post about the <b>Railway.<\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEiY5d0t2EJZ3RLYIVB1bvJ7P6DGVKR1uOoHhQC4g6Hketl8trnmxFI2iE-M_n6kq2ulp-aJF-0T_7uQ46kRofdpuf1CQbfHmPNqMfqS8KzsDISm-y7oMogbyxLqSGpdiGaz9fJT1rc_K7zNoZFv4buAZoX0fDhk00v5bRkKzw3ge_0XfZ4ZmFsrQJMuDOM\/s3908\/Railway%20Water%20breakfast%20room.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"2296\" data-original-width=\"3908\" height=\"235\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEiY5d0t2EJZ3RLYIVB1bvJ7P6DGVKR1uOoHhQC4g6Hketl8trnmxFI2iE-M_n6kq2ulp-aJF-0T_7uQ46kRofdpuf1CQbfHmPNqMfqS8KzsDISm-y7oMogbyxLqSGpdiGaz9fJT1rc_K7zNoZFv4buAZoX0fDhk00v5bRkKzw3ge_0XfZ4ZmFsrQJMuDOM\/w400-h235\/Railway%20Water%20breakfast%20room.jpg\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>He discovered that on <b>Saturday<\/b> mornings, the <b>Railway<\/b> offers<br \/>\na buffet breakfast, of the <b><i>\u201call you can eat\u201d <\/i><\/b>variety. The reason for the<br \/>\nbreakfast offer taking place on a <b>Saturday<\/b>, is because the <b>Railway <\/b>majors on<br \/>\nroast dinners on <b>Sundays<\/b> with a carvery that is very popular with the<br \/>\npunters.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Consequently, keeping the two<br \/>\nmeal occasions separate, makes a lot of sense for the pub management. Eggs were the only things on the buffet menu that were cooked to order,<br \/>\nthe rest of the breakfast items being on a <b><i>\u201chelp yourself\u201d<\/i><\/b> basis. A number of other customers turned up whist we were there, and it was<br \/>\nobvious from the interaction between them and the staff, that they were<br \/>\nregulars. As for the breakfast itself, the cost worked out at a very reasonable,<br \/>\n<b>\u00a39.50 <\/b>per head. There is a large pool table to<br \/>\nthe right of the bar, but apart from that, nothing jumped out as unusual. In<br \/>\nshort, the <b>Railway c<\/b>omes across as a basic, and down to earth local, catering<br \/>\nto its own band of loyal regulars, many of whom seemed gave the appearance of<br \/>\nex-pat <b>Londoners. There, we noticed a caf\u00e9, in the form of<br \/>\nthe<b> Riverside Restaurant<\/b>, which seems worthy of further investigation.<br \/>\nA boatyard, plus marina on the opposite bank of the <b>Medway<\/b>, is proof of the popularity<br \/>\nof boating on this section of <b>Kent\u2019s <\/b>largest river.
