So in his honor I\u2019ll AmericanStudy a<br \/>\nhandful of seismic quakes, leading up to a special post on Richter himself!]<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">On two<br \/>\ndistinct but interconnected ways to AmericanStudy a Caribbean catastrophe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">First<br \/>\nthings first (and I know I offer this disclaimer often when I write about<br \/>\nglobal events and issues, but I think it bears repeating each and every time):<br \/>\nthe horrific earthquake that <a href=\"https:\/\/escweb.wr.usgs.gov\/share\/mooney\/142.pdf\">hit Haiti in January<br \/>\n2010<\/a> is a specific event and history, our understandings of and engagements<br \/>\nwith which must be centered on that island nation and its people. The hundreds<br \/>\nof thousands of Haitians killed and millions more uprooted, the hundreds of<br \/>\nthousands of destroyed or severely damaged homes and other buildings (including<br \/>\nthe <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2010_Haiti_earthquake#\/media\/File:Haitian_national_palace_earthquake.jpg\">National<br \/>\nPalace<\/a>), the urgent and still in many ways ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfam.org\/en\/haiti-earthquake-our-response#:~:text=On%20January%2012%2C%202010%2C%20a,in%20an%20immense%20humanitarian%20crisis.\">humanitarian<br \/>\ncrises<\/a> that resulted from all those and many more effects; these tragedies have<br \/>\nto be framed and responded to as centrally and fundamentally Haitian, and nothing<br \/>\nI say on an AmericanStudies blog is meant to redirect or minimize that attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Yet of<br \/>\ncourse the United States is linked to the rest of the world, and in some specific<br \/>\ncases it\u2019s even more clearly and significantly connected in ways that demand we<br \/>\nalso engage such global stories in terms of what they help us see in ourselves.<br \/>\nI\u2019m not sure there\u2019s any other nation of which that\u2019s more true than Haiti: from<br \/>\nits early 19<sup>th<\/sup> century Revolution and the both <a href=\"https:\/\/americanstudier.blogspot.com\/2014\/03\/march-25-2014-caribbean-connections.html\">inspiring<br \/>\nand fraught effects<\/a> of that event in the Early Republic U.S.; to the striking<br \/>\nnumber of 20<sup>th<\/sup> century moments in which the U.S. directly intervened<br \/>\nin Haitian politics, including an <a href=\"https:\/\/history.state.gov\/milestones\/1914-1920\/haiti\">extended (nearly<br \/>\ntwo-decade, in fact) occupation<\/a> early in the century and an ambiguous but unquestionable<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/responsiblestatecraft.org\/us-haiti-coup\/\">influence on a coup<\/a><br \/>\nat the turn of the next century; the United States and Haiti have played as<br \/>\nprominent a role in each other\u2019s histories over the last couple centuries as<br \/>\nany two Western Hemisphere nations. When the U.S. helped spearhead relief and recovery<br \/>\nefforts after the quake, particularly the January 22<sup>nd<\/sup> \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9pFSe2ALUNU\">Hope for Haiti Now\u201d telethon<\/a>,<br \/>\nthat role has to be understood as in some way connected to these longstanding<br \/>\nrelationships\u2014whether a continuation of US interventions, guilt for that<br \/>\nhistory, or some combination of the two and other factors as well. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">But that\u2019s<br \/>\nnot the only way to AmericanStudy the U.S.\u2019s role in the earthquake\u2019s<br \/>\naftermath, and I would say it\u2019s at least as meaningful to understand this<br \/>\nmoment as part of a humanitarian foreign policy alternative to those histories of<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saturdayeveningpost.com\/2020\/01\/considering-history-iran-and-the-legacies-of-americas-clandestine-foreign-policies\/\">global<br \/>\nintervention and realpolitik influence<\/a>. No American political leader<br \/>\nembodied that humanitarian perspective better than <a href=\"https:\/\/millercenter.org\/president\/carter\/foreign-affairs\">President<br \/>\nJimmy Carter<\/a> (RIP), and Carter was of course still doing that humanitarian work<br \/>\nlong after his presidency, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com\/article\/news\/national\/president-jimmy-carter-haiti-habitat-for-humanity\/73-56e8b732-ae7a-4efc-9adf-fef9ec78383c\">in<br \/>\nHaiti with those affected<\/a> by the earthquake. And while that humanitarian<br \/>\nperspective and role can and should be extended anywhere in the world, it\u2019s<br \/>\nperhaps especially meaningful in a Western Hemisphere context\u2014given the U.S.\u2019s<br \/>\nhistory of interventions and interference, but also and maybe even more<br \/>\nimportantly given the <a href=\"https:\/\/americanstudier.blogspot.com\/2023\/05\/may-2-2023-hemispheric-histories.html\">concept<br \/>\nof creolization<\/a>, of the ways in which we can even more fully parallel the<br \/>\nhistories, communities, and identities of nations like the U.S. and Haiti. In<br \/>\nat least some ways, that is, the 2010 earthquake hit us as well. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Last quake<br \/>\ntomorrow,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Ben<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">PS.
