\n\tCitadel CEO and ARTnews<\/em> Top 200<\/a> Collector Ken Griffin<\/a> said the US is \u201ceroding\u201d its brand right now due to many of the economic policy changes being made during President Donald Trump\u2019s first 100 days in office.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAmerica rose beyond being a country, it was like an aspiration for most of the world, and we\u2019re eroding that brand right now,\u201d Griffin said during an interview with Semafor<\/em> senior editor Gina Chon during the media organization\u2019s World Economy Summit in Washington, D.C., on April 23. The event was virtually broadcast<\/a> on the social media platform X.<\/p>\n

\n\tGriffin said that in the financial markets, no brand compared to the reputation, strength, and credit-worthiness as the US Treasuries. \u201cWe put that brand at risk,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd as you and I both know, it can take a very long time to remove the tarnish on a brand.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tEarlier this month, the implementation of new \u201creciprocal\u201d tariffs prompted a large sell-off of US government bonds<\/a>. While the price of the bonds fell, the rate the US government had to pay on its bonds rose<\/a>, indicating lower confidence among investors in the US economy. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe Citadel CEO said the results during the President\u2019s first 100 days have been mixed due to an \u201cextremely extensive agenda,\u201d the \u201cspeed for action,\u201d and the \u201copportunity for missteps.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGriffin also said the President, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick \u201cneed to be very thoughtful\u201d and behave in a way that respects and strengthens the country\u2019s brand, \u201cbecause when you tarnish that brand, it can be a lifetime to repair the damage that has been done.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen asked about the current tariff policies<\/a> that have caused art professionals to scramble<\/a> and generated volatility in global stock markets<\/a>, Griffin said his biggest concern was: \u201cHow do we conduct ourselves so that we do not diminish the stature of the United States of America?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe was not optimistic about manufacturing returning to the US, saying, \u201cWith the policy volatility, you actually undermine the very goal you\u2019re trying to achieve.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGriffin was clear in his support of DOGE, the Department of Government Efficiency led by Tesla CEO and unelected presidential advisor Elon Musk as part of a wider reduction in federal spending. DOGE has notably recommended extreme cuts to staff and programs at the National Endowment for the Humanities. <\/a><\/p>\n

\n\t But when Chon asked if there was any space where there was room for optimism or opportunities, Griffin was dour in his reply. \u201cIf we were Europeans looking at our US assets, we\u2019ve lost 20 percent of our value in four weeks. If you use the Euro as a reference currency, we\u2019ve become 20 percent poorer in four weeks. There\u2019s not a lot of money to be made in that environment. When the pie is rapidly shrinking, there are very few people jumping for joy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLast year, Griffin donated $100 million<\/a> to conservatives, the fifth-largest amount for individual contributions to federal election spending, according to data released by the Federal Election Commission and analysis from Open Secrets, a nonprofit research and government transparency group based in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n

\n\tGriffin\u2019s largest disclosed donations were to the Senate Leadership Fund, on four separate occasions, totaling $30 million. He also made donations totaling $15 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, $15 million to the Keystone Renewal PAC, and $10 million to Maryland\u2019s Future, a single-candidate super political action committee in support of\u00a0Republican Larry Hogan for the US Senate.<\/p>\n

\n\tGriffin\u2019s contribution of $30 million to the Senate Leadership Fund was more than one-quarter (25.8 percent) of its total raised ($116.5 million), the\u00a0second-largest amount raised by an outside spending organization<\/a>\u00a0and the largest focused on electing conservatives in the 2024 US federal election.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile Griffin is not one of the 30 Top 200 Collectors on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index who have lost billions in their net worth<\/a> due to ongoing volatility<\/a> in the stock markets, the New York Times<\/em>\u00a0did report<\/a>\u00a0on April 6 that Griffin \u201cbecame increasingly convinced that Mr. Trump would cause tumult, said two employees not permitted to be named discussing the fund\u2019s machinations.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
