I get why social justice-oriented college students are furious with Israel. \u00a0(I am, too.)<\/p>\n

I get why they are protesting to support Palestinians\u2019 right to an independent homeland. \u00a0(I support that, too, though the boundaries are up for negotiation.)<\/p>\n

While I find it a deeply offensive, emotion-based tactic, I even get why these students ignore the atrocities that Hamas terrorists committed on October 7th. \u00a0Acknowledging harm committed by their cause would render it problematic, vulnerable.<\/p>\n

What I don\u2019t get is how these university students have managed to avoid learning anything from the history, political science, and philosophy courses they have taken. \u00a0Or maybe they haven\u2019t taken history, political science, or philosophy courses. \u00a0In that case, they should be wary of making arguments reliant on historical, political, or ethical claims.<\/p>\n

Case in point: Let\u2019s deconstruct just one of the many offensive taunts recently hurled at Jewish students at Columbia University<\/a>, one of the world\u2019s most prestigious institutions of higher learning.<\/p>\n

\u201cGo back to Poland!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

This directive makes five deeply problematic assumptions. \u00a0It\u2019s hard to know which is more historically inaccurate, politically simplistic, or morally outrageous.<\/p>\n

The students easily hurling such insults are now paying over $350,000 for four years\u2019 education<\/a> at our nation\u2019s most elite universities. \u00a0Oops, it seems they forgot to attend class. \u00a0When they remember why their education is being funded by a lot of hard-earned money (whether by their family, a foundation, or an endowment), here\u2019s a sample emergency reading list they might consult, to encourage them to rethink the easy but devastatingly wrong assumptions implied by their shouted claims:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. All Jews come from Poland, right?<\/strong> \u00a0Nope. \u00a0Even for those with \u201cAshkenazi\u201d backgrounds, America\u2019s Jews hail from most countries across northern, central, and eastern Europe. \u00a0A browse through Francesca Bregoli and David B. Ruderman\u2019s edited collection, Connecting Histories: Jews and Their Others in Early Modern Europe<\/a><\/em> would quickly correct this nonsense.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      \n
    1. If they\u2019re all from Poland, all Jews must be White, right? <\/strong>\u00a0Assuming that all Jews come from Poland would imply that all Jews are White. \u00a0But, nope. \u00a0Just skimming, say, Melanie Kaye\/Kantrowitz\u2019s The Colors of Jews: Racial Politics and Radical Diasporism<\/a><\/em> would give even a lazy student a run for their money. \u00a0And let\u2019s not even bring up how \u201crace\u201d is a social construction, making easy classification of racial categories problematic at the theoretical level. \u00a0Surely, these \u201cprogressive\u201c students could have learned that, in one of their classes on identity formation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
        \n
      1. All Jews have \u201cAshkenazi\u201d backgrounds originating in central or eastern Europe, right? \u00a0<\/strong>Nope again. \u00a0Simon Schama\u2019s The Story of the Jews: Finding the Words, 1000 BC-1492 AD<\/a><\/em> offers a magisterial but concise overview of the global Jewish diaspora. \u00a0Karen Primack\u2019s breezy collection, Jews in Places You Never Thought of<\/a><\/em>, expands that view to far-flung outposts of the Jewish diaspora. \u00a0Too busy protesting to read anything but social media posts? \u00a0A quick peek at the maps included in Eli Barnavi\u2019s collection, A Historical Atlas of the Jewish People<\/em>, from the Time of the Patriarchs to the Present<\/em><\/a>, doesn\u2019t require engaging with texts. \u00a0Surely, the busiest of student protesters can take a break to peek at images, no?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
          \n
        1. Jews don\u2019t have a place in America. <\/strong>\u00a0Or so \u201cGo back to Poland!\u201d implies. \u00a0This taunt has such chilling echoes of the racist chants urging Black Americans to \u201creturn\u201d to Africa heard across too many periods of US history that I can barely wrap my head around the echoes. \u00a0We are venturing far beyond anti-Semitism here. \u00a0Do we need scholarly references to remind passionately progressive students how historically absurd and ethically offensive it is to categorically police who gets to be \u201cAmerican\u201d?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
            \n
          1. Poland has a strong history of killing Jews, so \u201creturning\u201d to Poland sounds like a death sentence. \u00a0<\/strong>In Poland, Nazis murdered three million Jews \u2014 half the Jews murdered in the Holocaust. \u00a0Once that student chanting \u201cGo back to Poland!\u201d graduates, perhaps his degree will earn him enough money to do some affordable tourism in Poland. \u00a0There, he might visit the sites of the two most infamous concentration camps of the Holocaust \u2014 Auschwitz<\/a> and Treblinka<\/a>. \u00a0Had he known about those when he urged a \u201creturn\u201d to Poland? Reading Jan T. Gross\u2019s Fear: Anti-Semitism in Poland after Auschwitz<\/a><\/em> might give him further pause.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            *<\/p>\n

            \u201cStop killing children!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

            \u201cAll you do is colonize!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

            These taunts recently hurled at Columbia University Jewish students offer different problems. \u00a0Here, our passionate protester was accusing one person of representing \u2014 and being responsible for \u2014 all the policies that a government espouses, funds, and enacts.<\/p>\n

            This is a classic case of the part standing for the whole. \u00a0Literary theorists have a fancy name for this trope: synecdoche<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0It works well in all manner of everyday expressions we use unthinkingly. \u00a0\u201cAll hands on deck\u201d is the classic example evoked by English teachers, where \u201chands\u201d stand for the rest of the human body (while \u201cdeck\u201d stands metaphorically for any space of work). \u00a0No harm done here.<\/p>\n

            But when a person<\/strong> is used to stand for a nation<\/strong>, it\u2019s hard to imagine not<\/strong> being offended. Let\u2019s call this, the synecdochal fallacy<\/strong><\/em>. \u00a0Sound too abstract? \u00a0Here\u2019s how it played out at Columbia University.<\/p>\n

            The Jewish students targeted by protesters were treated as if they were citizens of Israel, hence blamed for that government\u2019s current policies. \u00a0But, wait. \u00a0Are Columbia University\u2019s Jewish students who were being targeted all Israeli citizens? \u00a0Unlikely. \u00a0Now we are venturing even deeper into the land of the absurd.<\/p>\n

            Assuming that any Jew is automatically a citizen of Israel \u2014\u00a0and therefore a defender of all Israeli policies, up to and including \u201ckilling children\u201d \u2014 smacks of just the sort of essentializing that anti-racists, feminists, and other progressives have rightfully decried for decades. Suddenly, essentializing is de rigueur <\/em>among the progressive left?<\/p>\n

            Using this logic, the recipients of these offensive chants could have assumed with equal absurdity that their critics were citizens of the US, hence descendants of the original White settler colonialists who conquered the Native peoples who inhabited the territory that is now the US, hence supportive of all US political evils.\u00a0 How would it have sounded if the Jewish students had yelled back:<\/p>\n

            \u201cGo back to England!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

            \u201cStop driving polluting cars!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

            \u201cAll you do is enrich corporations and oppress people of color!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

            You see the problem here?<\/p>\n

            It doesn\u2019t make sense to blame individuals for the ills of a nation.<\/p>\n

            At best, students targeting fellow (Jewish) students for the horrendous policies of another nation (Israel) is an ill-thought-out tactic that has no rational goal, hence unbecoming of our most elite universities\u2019 admissions choices. At worst, since these (Jewish) students are being inappropriately and offensively targeted, it smacks of anti-Semitism.<\/p>\n

            *<\/p>\n

            Taking issue with national policy is a contemporary luxury offered in the modern world. Respecting this luxury requires paying attention to how to enjoy it. \u00a0Those who decry national policies have every right to protest outside embassies or consulates that represent the nation. \u00a0Protesting against national policies by railing against random people with a particular religious affiliation who may or may not endorse those policies would seem silly, even laughable \u2014 if it weren\u2019t so serious. \u00a0No, odious.<\/p>\n

            Moreover, branding Israel itself a \u201csettler colonialist\u201d nation has its own historical fallacies<\/a>, as historian Simon Sebag Montefiore argued brilliantly<\/a> last October.<\/p>\n

            Then, we have the moral quagmire of progressives supporting Hamas, a terrorist organization whose charter endorses killing Jews.\u00a0 For students who haven\u2019t read the Hamas charter<\/a>, the Charter describes its armed Islamic Resistance Movement this way (Article 8):<\/p>\n

            \u201cJihad [commonly taken as \u201carmed struggle\u201d] is its path[,] and death for the sake of Allah is the loftiest of its wishes.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n

            Do our elite students recognize that they are repeating talking points articulated by a terrorist organization<\/a><\/strong> that is largely funded by Iran<\/a>? (As of 2021, Iran supported Hamas to the tune of $100,000,000<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

            *<\/p>\n

            And what about their professors?<\/p>\n

            Teachers: Let\u2019s remember why we chose our profession. \u00a0Isn\u2019t our job to teach facts? \u00a0And, as long as those facts involve humans, don\u2019t facts require appropriate interpretation to recognize nuance?<\/p>\n

            The current crisis in the Middle East is nothing if complex. \u00a0Attending to history doesn\u2019t mean renouncing the quest for justice.\u00a0 But it does require looking into all the vexing places where injustices lie \u2013 in this case, not only at the heart of Israel\u2019s current government, and among the Jewish settlers still maddeningly expanding into internationally accepted Palestinian territories, but also in the terrorist organization currently speaking for\u2014and brutally using as human shields\u2014Palestinians.\u00a0 If today\u2019s university students are incapable of understanding nuance and complexity that defy easy binary judgments, it\u2019s our job to teach them.<\/p>\n

            As for university presidents: How about requiring a course on \u201cEvaluating Evidence and Arguments<\/strong>\u201d for all students, no matter their major? \u00a0And another one on \u201cBinary Thinking: Seductions, Fallacies, Dangers<\/strong>,\u201d for students who graft simple good guy\/bad guy<\/em> models onto multi-leveled geopolitical quagmires.<\/p>\n

            In short, let\u2019s start equipping our students with the tools they need to think critically and assess complexity. \u00a0Surely, a $350K education ought to offer that.<\/p>\n

            P.S. Fascinating op ed piece just up in Newsweek<\/a> by a Palestinian peace activist from Gaza begging US students to rethink their protests. He urges: \u201cYou know what would help the Palestinians in Gaza? Condemning\u00a0Hamas<\/a>\u2018 atrocities.\u201d\u00a0 <\/p>\n

            P.P.S. A comment by a historian friend, Harry Liebersohn: \u201cOne book I would strongly recommend: Jeffrey Veidlinger, In the Midst of Civilized Europe: The Pogroms of 1918-1921 and the Onset of the Holocaust<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 By going back to a moment\u00a0before<\/em>\u00a0the Holocaust it allows you to see the patterns of violence against Jews going back to the late nineteenth-century pogroms in the Russian Empire and how October 7th was a continuation of those patterns.\u201d<\/p>\n
