\u200b<\/strong>Morro Castle in Hialeah isn\u2019t just another Cuban restaurant\u2014it\u2019s a cornerstone of the community, slinging Fritas and churros since 1966. If you\u2019re local, you know. If you\u2019re not, consider this your official invitation.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s clarify a bit of Frita history<\/a><\/strong> while we\u2019re at it: the Morro Castle in Hialeah (1201 W 44th Place) and the now-closed one in Little Havana<\/a><\/strong> were once part of the same family. The same person owned both, though the Hialeah location is still going strong.<\/p>\n

This particular Morro Castle means a lot to me. It\u2019s where I tried my first Frita Cubana<\/strong>, courtesy of my dad. He called it a \u201cCuban Hamburger,\u201d which was clever\u2014he knew I\u2019d be down for a burger but maybe not something unfamiliar-sounding like a frita. Spoiler alert: It worked.<\/p>\n

Even though fritas felt foreign to me back then, I find it strange nowadays when someone tells me they\u2019ve never had one. It\u2019s such a cultural staple\u2014especially in places like this.<\/p>\n

The place is still cash-only (don\u2019t worry, there\u2019s an ATM inside), and while there are a few tables, I chose the counter. Always the counter. That\u2019s where I sat as a kid, wide-eyed, waiting to see what this Cuban Hamburger business was about.<\/p>\n

Of course, I ordered a frita. What else were you expecting?<\/p>\n

As I took my first bite, I closed my eyes. I could see my dad<\/a><\/strong> again, watching closely to see if I\u2019d like it. He smiled so big when I did. That moment was the start of something\u2014my lifelong love affair with fritas.<\/p>\n

I blinked, and the frita was gone. It was that good. Naturally, I took a few to go. On my way out, I called my dad and told him where I was. \u201cYou had your first frita there,\u201d he said. Of course, I did. Who could forget a thing like that?<\/p>\n

Pro tip: Don\u2019t sleep on the churros. They\u2019re the perfect sweet ending.<\/strong><\/p>\n
