It could announce a plan to do so as soon as this week. The <a data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/computing\/intel-once-again-delays-its-long-awaited-ohio-chip-fabrication-facilities-185516274.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:struggling company;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> had 108,900 employees at the end of last year, so it may be set to cut tens of thousands of jobs. According to a <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-04-23\/intel-to-announce-plans-this-week-to-cut-more-than-20-of-staff\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Bloomberg;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em><\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>source, the aim of the downsizing is to streamline management operations and refocus Intel with an engineering-driven culture.<\/p>\n<p>Last August, Intel said it would <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/intel-will-cut-over-15000-jobs-in-a-sweeping-cost-cutting-effort-220951016.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:cut more than 15,000 jobs;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> to reduce costs. In fact, the company, which has been slow to embrace the industry&#8217;s shift toward artificial intelligence, has been significantly reducing its headcount <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/intel-lay-offs-pc-sales-slow-103514281.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:since 2022;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> amid declining sales.<\/p>\n<p>These latest purported layoffs would mark one of the first major restructuring measures since <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/big-tech\/intel-names-lip-bu-tan-its-new-ceo-211216526.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Lip-Bu Tan became CEO in March;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> after the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/big-tech\/intels-ceo-pat-gelsinger-has-suddenly-retired-151410215.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:sudden departure of Pat Gelsinger;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a>. The company is set to report its quarterly earnings results on Thursday. Companies that are restructuring often announce layoffs around the time they release earnings reports.<\/p>\n<p>Tan has also pledged to sell off assets that aren&#8217;t core to Intel&#8217;s goals as he tries to turn the business around. Last week, it emerged that Intel is <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/big-tech\/intel-is-selling-off-a-majority-stake-in-chip-maker-altera-for-446-billion-205015269.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:selling off a majority stake;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> in chipmaker Altera for $4.46 billion.
