Bond yields move inversely to prices. <\/p>\n<p>The US dollar gained 0.2 per cent against a basket of peers, although the currency continues to hover around multiyear lows having dropped more than 8.5 per cent this year so far.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday\u2019s moves come after a volatile month for financial markets following Trump\u2019s so-called \u201cliberation day\u201d tariff announcements triggered a sharp slump in US equities. The S&amp;P 500 remains more than 10 per cent lower so far this year despite rebounding this week. <\/p>\n<p>Technology stocks have been hit even harder, with the Nasdaq Composite index shedding more than 15 per cent since the beginning of the year. Nasdaq futures were up 2.7 per cent on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Markets were further rattled last week after Trump, who has been a persistent critic of Powell, signalled he believed he could dismiss the Fed chair before the end of his term in May 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Salman Ahmed, global head of macro and strategic asset allocation at Fidelity International, described the confrontation between the White House and the Fed as \u201ca manifestation of a fundamental tension\u201d in the economy. <\/p>\n<p>He said Trump\u2019s tariff policies had \u201cput pressure on the dual mandate of the Fed\u201d by increasing inflationary pressures while also hurting growth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat tension is not going to go away fundamentally until we know where the tariffs are going to settle,\u201d Ahmed said. \u201cThe day-to-day newsflow is going to lead to elevated volatility.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stay informed with free updates Simply sign up to the Equities myFT Digest &#8212; delivered directly to your inbox.
