It turns out that the overwhelming majority of people in the world\u2014between 80 and 89 percent, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/89percent.org\/\">a growing number of peer-reviewed scientific studies<\/a>\u2014want their governments to take stronger climate action.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As cofounders of a nonprofit that studies news coverage of climate change, those findings surprised even us. And they are a sharp rebuttal to the Trump administration\u2019s efforts to attack anyone who does care about climate change.<\/p>\n<p>For years\u2014and especially at this fraught political moment\u2014most press coverage of the climate crisis has been defensive. People who support climate action are implicitly told\u2014by their elected officials, by the fossil fuel industry, by news stories and social media discourse\u2014that theirs is a minority, even a fringe, view.<\/p>\n<p>That is not what the new research finds.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The most recent study, \u201cPeople\u2019s Climate Vote 2024,\u201d was conducted by Oxford University as part of a program the United Nations launched after the 2015 Paris Agreement. Among poorer countries, where roughly four in five of the world\u2019s inhabitants live,\u00a089 percent of the public wanted stronger climate action. In richer, industrialized countries, roughly two in three people wanted stronger action. Combining rich and poor populations, \u201c80% [of people globally] want more climate action from their governments.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Yale Program on Climate Change Communication\u2014which, along with its partner, the George Mason University Center for Climate Change Communication, is arguably the global gold standard in climate opinion research\u2014has published numerous studies documenting the same point: Most people, in most countries, want stronger action on climate change.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A fascinating additional\u00a089\u00a0percent\u00a0angle was documented in a study published by <em>Nature Climate Change<\/em>, which noted that the overwhelming global majority does not\u00a0<em>know<\/em>\u00a0it is the majority: \u201cIndividuals around the globe systematically underestimate the willingness of their fellow citizens to act,\u201d the report states.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"current-issue-block_509ea835774fc89fd40bd91e6d4be807\" class=\"current-issue  float-l-w-2\">\n<h4 class=\"current-issue__title\">\n                    Current Issue<br \/>\n            <\/h4>\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/issue\/may-2025-issue\/\" class=\"current-issue__cover\"><br \/>\n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/cover2505.jpg\" alt=\"Cover of May 2025 Issue\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In other words, an overwhelming majority of people want stronger action against climate change.\u00a0But at least for now, this global climate majority is a silent majority.<\/p>\n<p>Taken together, the new research turns the conventional wisdom about climate opinion on its ear. At a time when many governments and companies are stalling or retreating from rapidly phasing out the fossil fuels that are driving deadly heat, fires, and floods, the fact that more than eight in 10 human beings on the planet want their political representatives to preserve a livable future offers a much-needed ray of hope.<\/p>\n<p>The question is whether and how that mass sentiment might be translated into effective action.<\/p>\n<p>What would it mean if this silent climate majority woke up\u2014if its members came to understand just how many people, both in distant lands and in their own communities, think and feel like they do? How might this majority\u2019s actions\u2014as citizens, as consumers, as voters\u2014change?\u00a0If the current narrative in news and social media shifted from one of retreat and despair to one of self-confidence and common purpose, would people shift from being passive observers to active shapers of their shared future?\u00a0If so, what kinds of climate action would they demand from their leaders?<\/p>\n<section aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"ad fullwidth-ad contained row position-relative ad-block alignfull \">\n    <!--Ad policy starts here--><br \/>\n        <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/advertising-policy\" class=\"mid-ad-policy\">Ad Policy<\/a><br \/>\n        <!--Ad policy ends here--><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p>These are the animating questions behind the 89 Percent Project, a yearlong media initiative that launched this week. The journalistic nonprofit we run, <a href=\"https:\/\/coveringclimatenow.org\/\">Covering Climate Now<\/a>, has invited newsrooms from around the world to report, independently or together, on the climate majorities found in their communities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<section id=\"popular-block_9f4af0bcd9798fd6aebe208f6b707bcd\" class=\"popular-articles\">\n<div class=\"swiper\">\n<p><h2>Popular<\/h2>\n<p>            <span class=\"swipe-msg\"><span class=\"sr-only\">\u201cswipe left below to view more authors\u201d<\/span>Swipe \u2192<\/span>\n        <\/p>\n<ol class=\"popular-articles__list\">\n<li class=\"popular-articles__list-item swiper-slide\">\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"popular-articles__list-item swiper-slide\">\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"popular-articles__list-item swiper-slide\">\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"popular-articles__list-item swiper-slide\">\n<\/li>\n<\/ol><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>Who are the people who comprise the 89 percent?\u00a0Given that\u00a0support for climate action varies by country\u2014the figure is 74 percent in the United States, 80 percent in India, 90 percent in Burkina Faso\u2014does support also vary by age, gender, political affiliation, and economic status?\u00a0What do members of the climate majority want from their political and community leaders? And what has been standing in the way?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This week of coverage will be followed by months of further reporting that explores additional aspects of public opinion about climate change. If\u00a0most of the climate majority have no idea they are the majority, do they also not realize that defusing the climate crisis is by no means impossible? <a href=\"https:\/\/coveringclimatenow-dot-yamm-track.appspot.com\/2iaGOKbjD-lHyIbshENBlvZTX_S2ZcZByw8XrvuOPCwOL68TZlQH0tvWo0ytdyHSZFq6XODTiaVPcMBxMQ9RKPE3X6DSYM-XayfDvI9N5DF8yB0gYtz4gR14G2x-UuVpvfJNNJ-zgGk5QX-gNFlQdkQUnOw3corEuLEp_Qrq0zuYYG_3Md9x2zvTdw9l5ZcNSArf6FRzukxePH93K15BDoJC6hvMr7q3sZ2KUB-GSKZamY-3wmPgpuKjg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scientists have long said<\/a>\u00a0that humanity possesses the tools and know-how necessary to limit temperature rise to the Paris Agreement\u2019s aspirational target of the 1.5\u00ba C above preindustrial levels.\u00a0What\u2019s been lacking is the political will to implement those tools and leave fossil fuels behind.\u00a0The 89 Percent Project will culminate in a second joint week of coverage prior to the COP30 United Nations climate meeting in Brazil in November.<\/p>\n<p>While it\u2019s impossible to know how many newsrooms will participate in this week\u2019s 89 percent coverage, early signs are heartening. <em>The Guardian<\/em> and the Agence France-Presse news agency have joined as lead partners of the project. Other newsrooms offering coverage include\u00a0<em>The Nation<\/em>, <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>, <em>Scientific American<\/em>, <em>Time, Drilled, <\/em> Crooked Media, and <em>Indian Country Today<\/em> in the United States; the <em>National Observer<\/em> in Canada; the global broadcaster Deutsche Welle in Germany; the <em>Corriere della Sera<\/em> in Italy; the <em>Asahi Shimbun<\/em> in Japan; and the multinational collaborative Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism, based in Jordan.<\/p>\n<p>We believe the current mismatch between public will and government action amounts to a deficit in democracy.\u00a0Can that deficit be addressed if the climate majority awakens to its existence?\u00a0Would people elect different leaders?\u00a0Buy (or not buy) different products?\u00a0Would they talk differently to family, friends, and coworkers about what can be done to build a cleaner, safer future? The first step to answering such questions is to give the silent climate majority a voice. That will happen, finally, this week in news coverage around the world.<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-end-\" class=\"article-end \">\n<div aria-hidden=\"false\" id=\"article-editor-note\" class=\"article-editor-note-1 tn-editor-none-module\" data-nosnippet=\"\">\n<div class=\"article-editor-note-blocks\" id=\"editor_note\">\n<p>The chaos and cruelty of the Trump administration reaches new lows each week.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s catastrophic \u201cLiberation Day\u201d has wreaked havoc on the world economy and set up yet another constitutional crisis at home. Plainclothes officers continue to abduct university students off the streets. So-called \u201cenemy aliens\u201d are flown abroad to a mega prison against the orders of the courts. And Signalgate promises to be the first of many incompetence scandals that expose the brutal violence at the core of the American empire.<\/p>\n<p>At a time when elite universities, powerful law firms, and influential media outlets are capitulating to Trump\u2019s intimidation, <em>The Nation<\/em> is more determined than ever before to hold the powerful to account.<\/p>\n<p>In just the last month, we\u2019ve published reporting on how Trump outsources his mass deportation agenda to other countries, exposed the administration\u2019s appeal to obscure laws to carry out its repressive agenda, and amplified the voices of brave student activists targeted by universities.<\/p>\n<p>We also continue to tell the stories of those who fight back against Trump and Musk, whether on the streets in growing protest movements, in town halls across the country, or in critical state elections\u2014like Wisconsin\u2019s recent state Supreme Court race\u2014that provide a model for resisting Trumpism and prove that Musk can\u2019t buy our democracy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is the journalism that matters in 2025.
