In 1930, economist John Maynard Keynes predicted that by 2030, we\u2019d all be working just 15 hours a week.<\/p>\n

He assumed that as technology improved, we\u2019d need fewer hours to produce everything society needs. More productivity would mean more freedom.<\/p>\n

But here we are\u2014nearly a century later\u2014and many of us are still grinding through 40+ hour weeks, drowning in emails, reconciliations, and spreadsheets.<\/p>\n

Accountants know this reality all too well.<\/p>\n

Despite advances like cloud systems, cheaper storage, and faster processing, finance functions still rely heavily on people\u2014long hours, countless eyes, and extensive manual effort.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s all about to change.<\/p>\n

The arrival of artificial intelligence marks the beginning of a fundamental transformation.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re now seeing systems that can understand natural language, interpret financial data, summarise commentary, and generate forecasts\u2014with context and deep thinking.<\/p>\n

This goes way beyond dashboards or canned reports.
And it\u2019s just the beginning.<\/p>\n

Historically, every major tech breakthrough has created more jobs than it destroyed. The printing press, the automobile, the internet\u2014they didn\u2019t just automate tasks, they created industries we couldn\u2019t have predicted.<\/p>\n

But AI might be the exception.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not just enhancing productivity. It\u2019s replacing the need for people in certain roles altogether.<\/p>\n

Just this year, an AI-run venture capital firm independently reviewed startups, conducted interviews, and made funding decisions\u2014with minimal human input. Robots are now teaching themselves to cook, code, and collaborate.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s now entirely reasonable to assume that algorithms will soon plan and execute full audits\u2014with little to no human involvement.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t automation. It\u2019s autonomy.<\/p>\n

So maybe Keynes was right about the 15-hour workweek\u2014he was just a century too early.<\/p>\n

Or maybe the rise of the machine means we won\u2019t be working at all.<\/p>\n
