Dramaturgs offer a \u201ccritical link\u201d among artists, cultural institutions, and the institution\u2019s literal and ideological community, making them key players to honor the heritage and construct the future of theatre-making.<\/p>\n<p>In a day-to-day dramaturgical and literary management practice, their work may look like:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Contextualizing a play with research and script analysis for a production\u2019s artistic team.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Composing research packets, glossaries, study guides, educational programs, and lobby displays for the artistic team and audience.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Offering clarity and perspective in the rehearsal room.<\/li>\n<li>Communicating feedback and questions to the playwright.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>If a playwright is unable to be in the room, serving as \u201crepresentative\u201d for the script\u2019s intentions.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Supporting the playwright\u2019s writing process with contextual research.<\/li>\n<li>Facilitating talkbacks and community events.<\/li>\n<li>Soliciting, evaluating, and tracking new script submissions.<\/li>\n<li>Strengthening relationships with playwrights and their agents.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Advocating for productions, workshops, and readings of new plays.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Collaborating with the theatre\u2019s staff to select a season of plays.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How does dramaturgy apply to my work as an actor?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actingstudiochicago.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Capture-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"432\" height=\"336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.actingstudiochicago.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Capture-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8240\" style=\"width:296px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.actingstudiochicago.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Capture-1.png 432w, https:\/\/www.actingstudiochicago.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Capture-1-300x233.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Good news! You\u2019re already (hopefully) practicing dramaturgy as you thoughtfully prepare for an audition, rehearsal, or performance. According to Maren, an actor \u201ccommits random acts of dramaturgy\u201d as they analyze your character\u2019s arc within the story, research themes across a playwright\u2019s work, define an unknown word, or unearth the context of a period reference. An actor\u2019s dramaturgy practice deepens their script preparation to be an \u201copen-minded reader\u201d of the text and imaginative scene partner.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How can actors learn from dramaturgs? Collaborate with dramaturgs?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Whether you\u2019re in charge of your own script preparation or are working with a dramaturg in the rehearsal room, the practice of dramaturgy offers valuable skills to an actor. Try out these dramaturg-inspired tips to deepen your next rehearsal process:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ask the nitty-gritty questions.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Maren loves it when actors come to her with questions to \u201chelp them build the life and world of the character.\u201d She offers some recent examples:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What cigarettes would I be smoking?<\/li>\n<li>Does a lady cross her legs right now?<\/li>\n<li>Could you provide me with some period recipes so I know what I might have been eating?<\/li>\n<li>Do you have a book for film reference for the kind of exercises I might be doing?<\/li>\n<li>Could you go over the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle with me again?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can do it, too! Self-directed research for an audition or rehearsal can also open exciting insights into your character\u2019s life. Use your imagination to walk through her world and its sensations: What scents can she smell? What memories does she have of this room? How much did it cost to buy these shoes?\u00a0<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Stretch your (analytical) muscles.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you have a dramaturg in your next rehearsal process, you\u2019re fortunate to have an individual in the room who is trained to \u201cread plays in a slightly different way\u201d from directors or actors, Maren explains. A dramaturg switches their focus between \u201cbig picture\u201d and \u201ccharacter work\u201d and between the \u201ccontext of the world of the play\u201d and \u201cour own political moment.\u201d In rehearsal, the dramaturg offers context to actors and director so they can find the \u201cvariety of ways\u201d to interpret a beat or cultural reference in a scene.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actingstudiochicago.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Capture-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"664\" height=\"356\" src=\"https:\/\/www.actingstudiochicago.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Capture-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8243\" style=\"width:516px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.actingstudiochicago.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Capture-2.png 664w, https:\/\/www.actingstudiochicago.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Capture-2-300x161.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 664px) 100vw, 664px\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Similarly, an actor who\u2019s gotten to know their script via \u201copen-minded reading\u201d and research can also unlock details and the big-picture context of the play\u2019s world. As you practice flexibility in your perspective, you\u2019ll discover moments that \u201cthings in a scene [or monologue] could go another way\u201d \u2013 Shurtleff\u2019s Guidepost #6, anyone?\u00a0<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Follow your interests.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The word \u201cresearch\u201d fills some actors with dread, remembering boring high school history projects. Others get nervous as they face a totally unfamiliar world of a play (\u201chow do I know what questions to ask about the daily life of a prince of Denmark?\u201d). Don\u2019t despair! The most effective dramaturgy follows the researcher\u2019s individual interests.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Experiment to find your unique \u201cin\u201d to the character\u2019s world. Here are some examples from recent dramaturgy projects by yours truly:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make a playlist of popular songs from the character\u2019s childhood, region, or the era in which the play is set. Or, make a playlist of songs from your own life with lyrics or music that reflect the story.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Scroll through the setting (or your best guess at the location) on Google Maps Street View for the experience of walking your character\u2019s neighborhood.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>What are the day-to-day logistics your character follows? What bus do they take for work? What\u2019s their ideal morning routine? What acquaintances do they see on their commute?<\/li>\n<li>Based on the text or filled in by your own imagination, what\u2019s a story your character knows by heart? Find a book they may have read or a bedtime story from their region of origin.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How does dramaturgy fit into the future of Chicago theatre?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Maren believes that dramaturgs, especially those who also direct, write plays, or act, practice \u201cempathetic imagination\u201d. They use their experience in various artistic roles to consider collaborators\u2019 needs: \u201cWhat might this actor be curious about for this character?\u201d or \u201cWhat questions might serve this playwright or this designer or director?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Looking toward the future, she hopes that Chicago dramaturgs maintain their curiosity and \u201ccontinue to\u2026ask what our communities need.\u201d She tells me that \u201ctheatre survives [by]\u2026responding to what the community tells us their needs are,\u201d not by \u201ctelling [others] what we think they need.\u201d The practice of creative flexibility through dramaturgy supports the future of equitable, accessible, and innovative theatre-making.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Dana Pepowski They\u2019re everywhere: sharing research in the rehearsal room, leading a thought-provoking talkback, or sifting through new scripts as literary manager for a theatre company.
