He also claimed the protestors are getting paid for demonstrating against the electric vehicle maker, a point he has speculated on in the past.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Tesla CEO Elon Musk attempted to point the finger at <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/03\/21\/tesla-takedown-protests-organizers-elon-musk-donald-trump\/\">protestors<\/a> who have demonstrated en masse in front of vehicle showrooms in the U.S. and Europe, claiming without evidence that they have been <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/03\/31\/elon-musk-calls-for-arrest-funding-tesla-takedown-protests\/\">activated<\/a> because they are the recipients of government waste and fraud. Musk told analysts during the company\u2019s first quarter earnings call on Tuesday that the demonstrators would never admit the real reason they\u2019re protesting is because they get paid through government programs that have been victim to DOGE\u2019s cuts, but that was the real rationale underlying their actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe actual reason is because those receiving the waste and fraud wish to continue receiving it; that is the real thing that\u2019s going on here, obviously,\u201d Musk told analysts during an earnings call on Tuesday. \u201cThe protests that you\u2019ll see out there, they\u2019re very organized. They\u2019re paid for that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Musk previously <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/03\/31\/elon-musk-calls-for-arrest-funding-tesla-takedown-protests\/\">accused<\/a> wealthy Democratic political opponents of funding protestors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cTesla Takedown\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/actionnetwork.org\/event_campaigns\/teslatakedown\">protests<\/a>, as some have been called, have urged Tesla stockholders to sell their shares and Tesla owners to dump their cars. The organizers have described the movement as peaceful and have said they oppose violence, vandalism, and destruction of property.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cElon Musk is destroying democracy around the world, and he\u2019s using the fortune he built at Tesla to do it,\u201d the protest description on organizing website Action Network states. \u201cWe are taking action at Tesla to stop Musk\u2019s illegal coup.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some demonstrators have grown violent, lobbing <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/03\/28\/police-arrest-tesla-protest-molotov-cocktail-arson-gun-spray-paint-trump\/\">molotov cocktails<\/a> and burning Teslas, prompting President Donald Trump to announce that anti-Musk actions against the automotive manufacturer would be treated as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/03\/12\/president-trump-vandalize-tesla-property-domestic-terrorist-elon-musk\/\">domestic terrorism<\/a>.\u201d Last month, police <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/nevada-resident-arrested-and-charged-connection-violent-tesla-arson-las-vegas\">arrested<\/a> a 36-year-old Nevada man and charged him with 15 felony counts for vandalising a Tesla collision center in Las Vegas and firebombing five cars. Attorney General Pamela Bondi also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/attorney-general-pamela-bondi-announces-severe-charges-against-violent-tesla-arsonists\">announced charges<\/a> against three other people in Colorado, South Carolina, and Oregon who also used molotov cocktails to either light Teslas on fire or attempt to do so, as well as charging stations.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=03-FBV1T1Lc\">Fox News<\/a> in March, Musk blamed Democrats for the protests and called their actions \u201cderanged.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Protest organizers in Seattle did not immediately respond to a request for comment.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tesla Stock Tumbles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Musk\u2019s take on the Tesla protests comes as Tesla faces a serious reckoning on its stock price. Share prices are down 37% year-to-date and even longtime Tesla <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/article\/tesla-bull-calls-code-red-musk-needs-to-leave-doge\/\">bulls <\/a>have called \u201ccode red\u201d on Musk\u2019s time at Trump\u2019s side and his work with DOGE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMusk needs to leave the government, take a major step back on DOGE, and get back to being CEO of Tesla full-time,\u201d Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives wrote in a note last week. \u201cTesla is Musk and Musk is Tesla\u2026.and anyone that thinks the brand damage Musk has inflicted is not a real thing\u2026.spend some time speaking to car buyers in the US, Europe, and Asia\u2026you will think differently after those discussions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tesla\u2019s profit has taken a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/1318605\/000162828025018851\/exhbit991.htm\">significant slide<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.tesla.com\/press-release\/tesla-first-quarter-2025-production-deliveries-and-deployments\">first quarter<\/a> was more of the same. Operating income tumbled 66% year-over-year to $399 million, compared to $1.71 billion in the first quarter last year. Net income <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalassets.tesla.com\/tesla-contents\/image\/upload\/IR\/IR\/TSLA-Q1-2025-Update.pdf\">dropped<\/a> 71% year-over-year to $409 million compared to $1.39 billion, and operating margin decreased to 2.1% from 5.5%\u2014a slide of 343 basis points.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, revenues were down 9% to $19 billion compared to $21.3 billion, and the main culprits were lower vehicle deliveries, lower average car selling prices, and negative foreign exchange impact.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were a few positives, however. Energy revenues were up 67% to $2.73 billion and services revenue grew 15% to $2.64 billion. Tesla also had a cash position of about $37 billion, up 38% year over year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tesla has said the performance headwinds are due to production issues with the Model Y update, lower selling prices, and rising operating expenses because of AI and other projects.
