Bessent also admitted that any negotiations with China would \u201cbe a slog\u201d. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/us-china-trade-dispute\" data-trackable=\"link\">US and China<\/a> are in the middle of a deepening trade war after President Donald Trump imposed a total tariff of 145 per cent on goods from China and Beijing retaliated by slapping a 125 per cent levy on imports from America.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one thinks the current status quo is sustainable at 145 and 125 [per cent],\u201d Bessent told the conference, according to one person in the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, I would posit that over the very near future, there will be a de-escalation. And I think that should give the world, the markets, a sigh of relief\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009We have an embargo now, on both sides.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pointing out that shipping container bookings had fallen by a lot, Bessent added, \u201cThe goal isn\u2019t to decouple.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following his remarks, the S&amp;P 500 closed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/780cbf25-5f0a-48c3-a80e-cf97f7b71fd7\" data-trackable=\"link\">2.5 per cent higher,<\/a> while the Nasdaq Composite rose by 2.7 per cent. <\/p>\n<p>But while a number of countries have contacted the Trump administration since the president imposed \u201creciprocal\u201d tariffs this month, China and the US have not held any substantive trade talks.
