{"id":199572,"date":"2025-04-22T23:56:04","date_gmt":"2025-04-22T23:56:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/accounting\/qualities-that-make-a-good-leader\/"},"modified":"2025-04-22T23:56:04","modified_gmt":"2025-04-22T23:56:04","slug":"qualities-that-make-a-good-leader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=199572","title":{"rendered":"Qualities That Make a Good Leader"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>There\u2019s plenty of advice available on how to be a good leader, though which will apply to you, your team and your business will<\/p>\n<p>There are three things you need to know in order to be a good leader:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Know your team, including their strengths and weaknesses<\/li>\n<li>Know your business\u2019s direction, and how the team can support this vision<\/li>\n<li>Know yourself \u2013 how you feel as a leader and what you aspire towards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When you\u2019re leading a team, you need to be confident in that position. If you\u2019re unsure about your decisions, then this can lead to confusion in the team. If you\u2019re not clear on your qualities as a leader, then your employees may not follow you at all.<\/p>\n<p>You should be assured of your position at the head of the business, and encourage others to trust your decisions and try your methods of working.<\/p>\n<p>As we said above, you should have a clear (but flexible) vision of your business\u2019s future and how your team will help bring that vision to life. How well you communicate this vision to your team will directly impact on how well they deliver it.<\/p>\n<p>Another key way good leaders communicate is to motivate their teams. One of the most effective ways of doing this is holding regular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kashflow.com\/blog\/employee-appraisals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">employee appraisals<\/a> to fully assess each employee\u2019s performance and provide feedback.<\/p>\n<p>As you communicate your plan, make sure you empower your team by delegating roles and tasks to them. Get to know each team member\u2019s strengths and weakness so that you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kashflow.com\/blog\/what-is-an-organisational-chart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">assigning the best candidate for each role<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Find out about their career and development goals too, so that you can offer them roles they\u2019re most passionate about \u2013 which will keep them engaged in the job and provide better results.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to delegate properly and not micro-manage every step of the project. Trust your team to deliver their best work, and provide them with the resources and support they need. This will foster trust among the team and leave you free to focus on key responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-81067\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kashflow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/\u201cA-good-leader-takes-little-more-than-his-share-of-the-blame-and-a-little-less-than-his-share-of-the-credit\u201d.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Delegating goes beyond issuing jobs to your team. If they meet or beat their target, make sure you acknowledge and (if appropriate) reward them for a job well done. If they\u2019re struggling, or missed the mark, work with them to identify areas to improve. Sharing the successes and work together on the improvements can improve cohesion and build rapport within the team. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>And by placing accountability, both good and bad, where it\u2019s due, you\u2019ll create a sense of responsibility across your team.<\/p>\n<p>While it\u2019s important to give your team room to approach projects on their own terms, you need to remember that the buck stops with you. That means you\u2019ll need to make the final decision when it\u2019s needed \u2013 such as approving concepts or next steps. Again, having a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kashflow.com\/resources\/business-plan-template\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clear vision of your business<\/a> and its direction will help here.<\/p>\n<p>Just remember to consult key stakeholders when making any major decisions, as they will be the most keenly affected by the results. And don\u2019t be afraid to ask for advice or opinions when you need them.<\/p>\n<p>Your small business is your dream, but you have to remember that it probably won\u2019t be your employee\u2019s dream \u2013 beyond keeping them in a job. But that doesn\u2019t mean that your passion can\u2019t be contagious.<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re getting stuck in with the hard work and doing your best, it both shows your team how it\u2019s done and encourages them to do the same. In working alongside your employees on projects, you\u2019ll also likely gain their respect for \u201cpulling your weight\u201d and set a good example of how to work for the benefit of the business.<\/p>\n<p>Just keep in mind that your employees probably won\u2019t have the same innate passion for the business, especially when you\u2019re asking them to go the extra mile.<\/p>\n<p>As we mentioned above, your employees probably won\u2019t have the same passion for the business that you do, which means you\u2019ll need to find ways to inspire them.<\/p>\n<p>The best way to do this is to set a good example. By being passionate about your job, making crucial decisions with confidence and clearly communicating your plan you\u2019ll find it easier to motivate and inspire employees as they\u2019ll better understand the end goal and how they fit into it.<\/p>\n<p>Also, make sure communication is two-way and that you\u2019re understanding what motivates and inspires each individual employee to get the best out of them and ensure they\u2019re happy in the workplace. As much as it\u2019s your dream business, it\u2019s also their career.<\/p>\n<p>A recurring theme throughout this blog, but one that\u2019s so important it\u2019s worth mentioning in its own point: you need to dedicate time to your team and ensure your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kashflow.com\/blog\/employee-engagement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">employees are engaged<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The best leaders consider themselves part of a team, not in charge of it. Listen to your employees, colleagues, industry peers and shareholders. Seek critical feedback on your own management style and the direction of your business to ensure you\u2019re making informed decisions.<\/p>\n<p>Take time to recognise the career ambitions of your employees and how your business can best support them, so that your staff are more likely to stay on and progress within the business \u2013 reducing your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kashflow.com\/blog\/recruitment-hiring-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">need to hire<\/a>.
