\"\"<\/a>Happy New Year! \u00a0We\u2019re not wasting any time, as winter is already ten days old and the first big release day of the year is only two days away. \u00a0This is already shaping up to be one of the best winter music slates we\u2019ve ever heard, with incredible albums released in every genre. \u00a0It\u2019s an encouraging sign that 2025 might turn out, in the words of Tori Amos, to be \u201ca pretty good year.\u201d \u00a0At the very least, we\u2019ll have some good music to accompany us as we huddle around the fire or venture out into the cold. \u00a0And for those who love adventure, who find new energy in mountains and snowdrifts, we have music for you too: something for everybody as we turn the page of the new year. \u00a0We begin today with quietude, then nudge our way into noise. \u00a0Ring out the old, ring in the new!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>We are overjoyed to announce the return of Asheville, North Carolina\u2019s Burial Beer, VISUALS Wine and\u00a0Ceremony of Seasons\u00a0<\/em>series, which we feared might be over ~ or at least on extended hiatus ~ following the devastation of Hurricane Helene. \u00a0And not only are they back; they are back in a very big way. \u00a0Chandra Shukla<\/strong>\u2018s Hima \u0939\u093f\u092e<\/a><\/strong><\/em> is a multi-sensory package, meant to evoke the cozy and mystical side of winter. \u00a0The sitar drones wash over the listener like a warm blanket. \u00a0Meanwhile, the aperitif style wine warms the body; and this time, there\u2019s also a container of incense, with frankincense and myrrh (but no gold). \u00a0It all comes in a beautiful wooden box (pictured right). \u00a0Hima\u00a0<\/em>means\u00a0cold<\/em>, and while the tape is a celebration of the solstice, it\u2019s really a feast for the spirit. The album is officially released on February 7. \u00a0While you\u2019re on the site, be sure to order some of the prior wines and releases, some of which ended up our our 2024 year-end charts!<\/p>\n

Ambient<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Whitelabrecs<\/a><\/strong> has huge plans for winter, including a brand new imprint and a wide array of releases, many publicly unannounced. \u00a0We can, however, tell you about Sleeplaboratory 5.0<\/em>, the continuation of the label\u2019s flagship series. \u00a0With artists both famous and new, the compilation seeks to work as a sleep aid, its cover (pictured above) as blue as the January snow (January 10). \u00a0Then on January 18,\u00a0Calm Pieces\u00a0<\/strong>releases\u00a0Singles<\/em>, featuring re-recorded versions of earlier tracks, intended to bring peace to troubled souls. \u00a0To a similar end,\u00a0Kilometre Club <\/strong>will be releasing overnight, <\/em>an 84-track \u201ccontinuous sleep album,\u201d this Friday; between this and the release above, no one should have insomnia this month (Imaginary North<\/a><\/strong>, January 3). \u00a0The\u00a0LINE<\/a><\/strong> imprint is preparing two releases for January. \u00a0First up is the reunion of William Basinski + Richard Chartier<\/strong> on\u00a0Aurora\u00a0<\/em>Terminalis<\/i>, whose electronic pulses bleed through the ambient skin (January 10). \u00a0Then on January 31, the label unveils a remastered version of\u00a0Steve\u00a0<\/strong>Roden<\/b>\u2018s\u00a0Forms of Paper\u00a0<\/em>in conjunction with Mexico\u2019s Aurora Central Records, the first time the release will appear on tape and vinyl.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Two great musical forces unite on\u00a0Fragments<\/a><\/strong><\/em> as\u00a0Joachim Spieth | Warmth\u00a0<\/strong>bring to the table all they have learned as the leaders of the Affin, Archives and FAINT labels. \u00a0The music and cover are suitably wintry, awash in billows of electronic sound (Affin, January 10). \u00a0more eaze & claire rousay\u00a0<\/strong>present an unusual Americana on\u00a0no floor<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, which seems like a dusty Texas dream, melodies sinking into soundscapes as time and place distort (Thrill Jockey, March 21). \u00a0Sarah Pag\u00e9 and Patrick Graham\u00a0<\/strong>also turn to the experimental side on\u00a0Littoral States<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, an album rich in hue, thanks to the presence of harp, bass koto, sarangi, waterphone, hamon and nano garden (Envision, January 24). \u00a0Harpist Alanna\u00a0<\/strong>Thornburgh<\/b>\u00a0investigates the folklore and mythology of rural Ireland on Shapeshifter<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, which should appeal to fans of\u00a0The Secret of Kells\u00a0<\/em>(February 12).<\/p>\n
