A key element of any successful strategy is prioritizing the tactics that make sense for the specific, short-term context. <\/p>\n

I can\u2019t stress enough how <\/span>some tactics,<\/a><\/strong> in the short term, might seem to move entirely in the opposite direction of the <\/span>long-term strategy.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

I love Airbnb’s example. In its early days, Airbnb sold cereal boxes to stay afloat temporarily. <\/p>\n

Around the time of the 2008 election, the co-founders raised $30,000 by selling limited edition cereal boxes featuring Barack Obama and John McCain.<\/p>\n

To make ends meet, or as they call it in startup lingo,<\/span> <\/em>\u200b<\/a>“bootstrap the company,”<\/a><\/em>\u200b<\/a> Airbnb’s founders had the idea to sell limited edition cereal boxes.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the key point is to survive long enough to follow the map.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n

Thus, even a brief \u201c<\/span>reroute<\/em>\u201d is enough to get back on track. <\/span><\/p>\n

In other cases, context will allow you to take\u00a0<\/span>vertical routes<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>or those that, while working in the short term, still align pretty well with a long-term strategy. <\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019d always take vertical rather than diagonal routes in a perfect world.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    First Phase of Major Projects:<\/strong> Begin preparation and achieve early wins for major projects to establish a solid foundation for larger efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    Fill-Ins:<\/strong> Utilize downtime or parallel work to complete low-effort tasks.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  4. \n

    Reconsider:<\/strong> Simplify, eliminate, or redesign initiatives that are resource-intensive but offer a low strategic impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
