His persecution and assassination served a political purpose: to divert attention from a crumbling, corrupt empire.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Centuries later, from 1940 to 1960, the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/publications\/prologue\/2016\/summer\/lavender.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (Lavender Scare)\">Lavender Scare<\/a>\u201d saw thousands of federal employees purged for being gay. Once again, fear triumphed over reason, and the true sources of instability were ignored.<\/p>\n<p>We like to think we\u2019ve grown more sophisticated, and that with knowledge comes empathy. But in Iowa\u2014my home state, once a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityofdubuque.org\/DocumentCenter\/View\/1178\/History-of-Iowa-Civil-Rights\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (national leader)\">national leader<\/a> in civil rights\u2014the same cynical playbook is being dusted off and weaponized against transgender people.<\/p>\n<p>On February\u00a028, Iowa <a href=\"https:\/\/stateline.org\/2025\/02\/28\/iowa-governor-signs-bill-repealing-civil-rights-protections-for-gender-identity\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (became)\">became<\/a> the first U.S. state to remove gender identity from its civil rights code. This stripped transgender Iowans of legal protection in employment, housing, education, and public life. Lawmakers framed the bill as an effort to \u201cprotect girls\u201d\u2014a rhetorical move designed to pit one group of children against another. Opponents of the bill have called it a rollback of civil rights protections in Iowa.<\/p>\n<p>As a child and adolescent psychiatrist practicing in Iowa, I see the fallout firsthand. Transgender\u00a0youth already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/blog\/the-trevor-project-releases-new-state-level-data-on-lgbtq-youth-mental-health-victimization-access-to-support\/?gad_source=1&amp;gbraid=0AAAAADsmOdbtFlPrgMUtyCmakCneaK6l_&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjw--K_BhB5EiwAuwYoyme22KOlPZAB5Evl7RvQGl4WblxnTEqUQA0bjYw6pnWWNxurToHvFhoC33EQAvD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (face)\">face<\/a> higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide. And national data <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Trevor-Project-Accepting-Adult-Research-Brief_June-2019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (shows)\">shows<\/a> that LGBTQ+ youth who have even a single accepting adult in their lives are 40 percent less likely to report a suicide attempt in the past year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even though Iowa\u2019s gender-affirming care ban does not take effect until July 1, many of my patients are already feeling its impact. Families are scrambling to secure care across state lines, with some traveling five hours or more. The result is a logistical and emotional crisis\u2014especially for those with limited financial means.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to this care ban, Iowa and other states have also <a href=\"https:\/\/iowacapitaldispatch.com\/2025\/02\/06\/battle-over-the-legality-of-iowas-school-book-ban-heats-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (passed)\">passed<\/a> laws removing books from school libraries, further isolating LGBTQ+ students and sending a chilling message about who belongs.<\/p>\n<p>This is no longer about policy disagreements. It\u2019s about exploiting fear to win power. It\u2019s about provoking emotional responses for political gain, regardless of the real-world consequences.<\/p>\n<p>Why pick on transgender youth? Because they are politically convenient targets. They are misunderstood by many, and easy to frame as threats rather than kids simply trying to exist. Politicians understand this. They are using our evolutionary biology against us. The amygdala\u2014the brain\u2019s fear center\u2014responds strongly to the unfamiliar, stirring emotional momentum even when there\u2019s no logical reason to be afraid.<\/p>\n<p>Real problems, including climate change, school shootings, health care, and poverty, are difficult to address. They demand complex solutions and long-term commitment. It\u2019s easier to redirect public anxiety toward a vulnerable group than to confront those systemic failures. That redirection is not leadership. It is cowardice.<\/p>\n<p>Many of these same politicians market themselves as champions of \u201cfamily values\u201d or \u201cmental health,\u201d but there is nothing mentally healthy about dehumanizing children. There is no family value in forcing parents to flee their home state to protect their kids.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We must stop pretending this is a debate between equals. It is not. This is a test of moral clarity.\u00a0 Either we believe that all children deserve safety, dignity, and access to care, or we don\u2019t.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Real strength doesn\u2019t look like cruelty. It looks like listening to families. It looks like being\u00a0willing to evolve. It looks like standing up when it\u2019s hard, not piling on when it\u2019s easy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This moment is not just about Iowa. It\u2019s about whether we are willing to name cruelty when we\u00a0see it. Whether we\u2019re brave enough to remember that what\u2019s popular isn\u2019t always what\u2019s right\u2014and what\u2019s right is rarely easy.<\/p>\n<p>If we want to preserve anything good about this country, it will require more than slogans. It will\u00a0require action and discernment.
