Every time I hand over my precious camera gear, I fret about its survival and whether or not I\u2019ll have to explain to yet another understandably concerned security agent, that those large lumps of electronics have solely peaceful uses. But why do I need all these extra pieces? Just look at the color of those squammies!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Well, yes, very often I am, and I\u2019m going to put to one side the obvious uses for large flashguns: night time, inside caves\/wrecks, and of course the murky waters off my own country.<\/p>\n<p>During the day, even though the amount of available light at say, twenty meters on a tropical reef, is suitable to take a photograph with a fast-enough shutter setting to avoid motion blur, you\u2019ll get a very dismal-looking picture. It\u2019ll be dominated by blues and greys and won\u2019t look anyway near how our terrestrial eyes and brain remembered it. I wonder if this is something that aquarists occasionally forget, as their comparably shallow tanks don\u2019t (to the human eye) show an appreciable change between the upper reaches of the tank to the lower, in terms of color. In most home aquariums, enough red light gets to the bottom to ensure a red fish appears red, but below ten meters in the wild, that\u2019s not the case.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_118124\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/reefs.com\/?attachment_id=118124\" rel=\"dofollow attachment wp-att-118124\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118124\" class=\"size-full wp-image-118124\" src=\"https:\/\/reefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSC0468.jpg\" alt=\"In this image, the flash guns fired, though you will note a less than even distribution of light.\" width=\"650\" height=\"971\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSC0468.jpg 650w, https:\/\/reefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSC0468-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/reefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSC0468-600x896.jpg 600w, https:\/\/reefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSC0468-500x747.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-118124\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In this image the flash guns fired, though you will note a less than even distribution of light.\u00a0 You can adjust this in Photoshop, but I wanted to show you the effect.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>How can you combat this? \u00a0If you\u2019re planning to go snorkeling or diving on a reef, and you\u2019re looking to buy a waterproof camera or housing, it\u2019s well worth considering one with an extra flash gun or one that allows you to use your camera\u2019s built-in flash easily. You\u2019ll get much better results and see the \u2018real\u2019 colors of the reef.\u00a0 Failing that, you might try a color-correcting filter. Usually made of red acrylic (glass is often more expensive), these fit over the lens to \u2018add in\u2019 some red.\u00a0 Some cameras have \u2018underwater\u2019 modes, but I have little experience of these I\u2019m afraid.<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, you might want to shoot in RAW and spend some time in Photoshop.\u00a0 This can also offer great results, but you\u2019ll \u00a0need a camera capable of doing so and much bigger memory cards.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_118125\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/reefs.com\/?attachment_id=118125\" rel=\"dofollow attachment wp-att-118125\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118125\" class=\"size-full wp-image-118125\" src=\"https:\/\/reefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSC0469a.jpg\" alt=\"The third way.
