{"id":19605,"date":"2025-01-09T15:42:38","date_gmt":"2025-01-09T15:42:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/business\/finance\/3-stocks-or-etfs-i-want-to-buy-in-2025\/"},"modified":"2025-01-09T15:42:38","modified_gmt":"2025-01-09T15:42:38","slug":"3-stocks-or-etfs-i-want-to-buy-in-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=19605","title":{"rendered":"3 Stocks or ETFs I Want to Buy in 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n<h2>3 Stocks or ETFs I Want to Buy in 2025<\/h2>\n<p>As I approach close to 20 years as a DIY investor, <em>a hybrid investor no less <\/em>and almost 16 years (!) being\u00a0<em>My Own Advisor <\/em>I\u2019ve come to appreciate investing and portfolio simplicity more and more.<\/p>\n<p>With that theme in mind, here are 3 stocks or ETFs I want to buy more of in 2025.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Our core stocks and ETFs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Our hybrid investing approach has been both very successful and to my point above, rather simple to execute on over the last two decades. Sure, amongst some big winners there have been mistakes choosing some individual stocks over others (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/now-hr-reit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">looking at you H&amp;R REIT (see here<\/a>) and AQN as key examples in recent years) <em><strong>but generally speaking<\/strong><\/em>, there has been a tremendous amount of income earned and growth gained using our hybrid investing approach.<\/p>\n<p>To recap:<\/p>\n<ul data-slot-rendered-content=\"true\">\n<li><strong>Approach #1<\/strong> \u2013 we own a number of Canadian dividend paying stocks for income and growth, mostly in our taxable accounts these days. While we\u2019re down to under 30 Canadian stocks owned, <em>and that number could go even lower in the coming years,<\/em> we continue to believe buying and holding our DIY bundle of Canadian dividend-paying stocks will, over time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/financial-independence-update\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">provide some steady monthly income for future wants and needs in semi-retirement.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"tWsyEnEf7D\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/financial-independence-update\/\">Financial Independence Update<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content lazyload\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cFinancial Independence Update\u201d \u2014 My Own Advisor\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/financial-independence-update\/embed\/#?secret=1dLx3Lc52b#?secret=tWsyEnEf7D\" data-secret=\"tWsyEnEf7D\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The core stocks we own from Canada can be summarized as follows from these sectors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Financials (banks, lifecos)<\/li>\n<li>Energy (and pipelines)<\/li>\n<li>Utilities\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Industrials<\/li>\n<li>Materials<\/li>\n<li>Communication<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We also happen to own a few U.S. stocks at the time of this post (<strong>BRK.B<\/strong>, <strong>BLK<\/strong> as some examples) but that number of U.S. stocks owned is now <em>significantly lower<\/em> than it was 5-years ago. We own our home and we\u2019re very fortunate to own a new car too.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"kVylr8Cy8B\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/how-we-invest\/\">How We Invest<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content lazyload\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cHow We Invest\u201d \u2014 My Own Advisor\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/how-we-invest\/embed\/#?secret=lZSAlqFfo5#?secret=kVylr8Cy8B\" data-secret=\"kVylr8Cy8B\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In so many respects, I feel like we\u2019ve won the race to date.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is no need to take on debt\/leverage at this stage in our lives.<\/li>\n<li>There is little need to chase new\/shiny stocks or alternative crypto-like investments.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>There is generally less need to speculate as I have done from time-to-time over the last 20 years.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While there are no risk-free investments, the risk of <em>a signficant loss<\/em> with some investments seems small these days. For example: I don\u2019t believe the entire Canadian financial sector will implode, although I guess that could happen. Same goes with the utilities sector, owning companies like Fortis or Emera in particular are good bond-proxies that deliver 4%-5% yield.<\/p>\n<p>Using my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/faqs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5% rule<\/a> (i.e., do not own too many stocks worth more than 5% of our portfolio value), even if one stock does totally go under\/to zero I have 95% of my portfolio intact \u2013 in a mix of income stocks that tend to pay higher dividends over time and growth stocks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In years\u2019 past, I wrote about 5 stocks I would like to buy in 2021 or 2022 but this coming year, <strong><em>it\u2019s very different as I enter a new phase.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The sum of my individual stock holdings has gotten smaller over time, <em>more concentrated really<\/em>, to go with my low-cost ETFs for desired diversification. Boring is good.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the coming year with some semi-retirement work on the horizon, I\u2019ve decided to narrow my stock or ETF purchases to just three.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. XAW<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No real surprise here. I\u2019ve hinted at owning more of this equity-focused ETF ex-Canada for some time now and with a few weeks to go before more Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA) contribution room opens up, XAW is my #1 choice to fill up this account with in early January 2025.<\/p>\n<p>XAW has &gt;60% holdings with U.S. stocks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Brookfield (BN)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over the last few years in my taxable account, since contributions to our TFSAs and RRSPs were previously full, I\u2019ve been adding to this stock here and there.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you want to listen to where Brookfield has been and where it\u2019s going \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookfield.com\/news-insights\/podcasts\/brookfield-perspectives\/conversation-bruce-flatt-and-mark-carney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">very well worth your time.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I see Brookfield as a long-term growth play for part of our portfolio \u2013 Brookfield is one of the world\u2019s largest alternative investment management companies on the planet. It\u2019s growing still too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Tourmaline (TOU)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In recent years, I\u2019ve also been adding to my Tourmaline position. Tourmaline is Canada\u2019s largest natural gas producer focused on long-term growth through all these: exploration, development, production and acquisitions.<\/p>\n<p>Long-term, this is also a growth position for me when it comes to natural gas specifically. Again, we\u2019ll see how well I do if\/when I add to this position over time after I focus on the previous two listed above.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><strong>3 Stocks or ETFs I Want to Buy in 2025<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Risk is relative and unique.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you decide you need an average annual return of 7% in order to meet a financial goal, and you invest in lower-risk investments that only pay 3%, yes, you won\u2019t lose much money but you won\u2019t meet your goal.<\/p>\n<p>On the flipside, once an investor has largely met their financial goals, said investor only needs to take on as much investing risk as necessary \u2013 to sustain their needs.
