{"id":195329,"date":"2025-04-20T20:28:10","date_gmt":"2025-04-20T20:28:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/airline\/united-a321xlrs-coming-2026-with-new-polaris-seats-premium-plus\/"},"modified":"2025-04-20T20:28:10","modified_gmt":"2025-04-20T20:28:10","slug":"united-a321xlrs-coming-2026-with-new-polaris-seats-premium-plus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=195329","title":{"rendered":"United A321XLRs Coming 2026 With New Polaris Seats, Premium Plus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>In December 2019, United Airlines <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/united-airlines-a321xlr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">placed an order for 50 A321XLRs<\/a>, which is Airbus\u2019 new ultra long range and fuel efficient <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/airbus-a321xlr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">evolution of the A321<\/a>. The plane entered commercial service in late 2024, with <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/news\/iberia-airbus-a321xlr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Iberia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/news\/aer-lingus-airbus-a321xlr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aer Lingus<\/a> being the launch customers. As of now, United is expected to get its first A321XLR in early 2026, though of course that timeline could slip further.<\/p>\n<p>In this post, I want to take an updated look at United\u2019s A321XLR cabins, as we kind of have a sense of what to expect from United\u2019s new narrow body product. Note that this is all separate from the 130 <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/news\/united-airlines-airbus-a321neo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Airbus A321neos that United has on order<\/a>, which the airline is currently taking delivery of. Separately, we have a sense of what to expect from United\u2019s wide body Polaris business class, as <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/news\/united-787-new-polaris-seats-premium-configuration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the airline plans to introduce a new product<\/a> there as well.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-to-expect-from-united-s-a321xlr-cabins\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what_to_expect_from_uniteds_a321xlr_cabins\"\/>What to expect from United\u2019s A321XLR cabins<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>Before we talk about cabins, let\u2019s talk about United\u2019s route plans for A321XLRs:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>United will primarily fly A321XLRs across the North Atlantic and to Latin America, so you can expect the planes to largely be on \u201clong and thin\u201d routes, like Newark to Bogota and Edinburgh<\/li>\n<li>United will not only use A321XLRs to replace Boeing 757-200s, but also to expand to some markets where the economics didn\u2019t previously make sense, given that the A321XLR is more fuel efficient than the 757<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As far as the onboard product goes, what should we expect? Here\u2019s what we know for sure:<\/p>\n<ul id=\"block-c5fb9b65-3c07-4463-a360-f26b027b97a7\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>United will introduce an all new Polaris business class seat for the A321XLR, since <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/guides\/united-polaris-business-class-seats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the current Polaris seat can\u2019t<\/a> be installed on narrow body aircraft<\/li>\n<li>United will be installing Premium Plus premium economy on the A321XLR, which you\u2019ll otherwise only find on wide body aircraft<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.onemileatatime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/United-Polaris-767-24.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-197910\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">United Premium Plus on the Boeing 767-300<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>You can generally expect that full service airlines will be configuring A321XLRs in a fairly premium layout, since that\u2019s how the economics most make sense for long haul service. I\u2019d expect the seat counts on these planes for airlines that take this approach to be much closer to 150 than 200.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"uniteds_new_a321xlr_business_class_seat\"\/>United\u2019s new A321XLR business class seat<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>Back in September 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/paxex.aero\/united-polaris-single-aisle-seat-details\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Seth Miller<\/a> flagged <a href=\"https:\/\/patentimages.storage.googleapis.com\/40\/3f\/75\/7dc40d497d364f\/US11691736.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the patent<\/a> that United filed for its new narrow body business class seat. It would appear that United has elected to go with a herringbone configuration on its Airbus A321XLRs.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"700\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.onemileatatime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/United-A321XLR-Polaris-Seatmap.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-300400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.onemileatatime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/United-A321XLR-Polaris-Seatmap.jpg?width=375&amp;auto_optimize=low&amp;quality=75 375w, https:\/\/cdn.onemileatatime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/United-A321XLR-Polaris-Seatmap.jpg?width=182&amp;auto_optimize=low&amp;quality=75 182w, https:\/\/cdn.onemileatatime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/United-A321XLR-Polaris-Seatmap.jpg?width=1200&amp;auto_optimize=low&amp;quality=75 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">United\u2019s new A321XLR Polaris business class cabin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"953\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.onemileatatime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/United-A321XLR-Polaris-Seat.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-300401\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">United\u2019s new A321XLR Polaris business class seat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Not surprisingly, United is trying to make this configuration as efficient and dense as possible, with seats facing the aisle at a 49 degree angle. These seats can be installed with just 28\u2033 of pitch, while still offering a bed length of 75-78\u2033. The seat map suggests there will be 28 Polaris business class seats, which would make for a huge business class cabin.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, to save space, the seats will offer a \u201cspace-sharing region,\u201d whereby part of the area between seats will give a person on one side space at shoulder level, and a person on the other side space at the lower arm level. While the paten\u2019t doesn\u2019t mention it, United does plan on installing doors on its A321XLR business class.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wandr.me\/2023\/09\/united-airlines-polaris-adient-altitude-single-aisle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Seth Miller<\/a> also points out that while it hasn\u2019t been announced, everything is pointing to United having selected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adient-aerospace.com\/products\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Adient Altitude seat<\/a> as its new narrow body business class. Based on United getting the patent for this seat, it also sounds like United will be the only airline to have this exact product, unless it licenses it out.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"920\" height=\"583\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.onemileatatime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Adient-Altitude-Seat.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-300684\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Adient Altitude seat, probably United\u2019s new A321XLR product<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For a narrow body business class, United\u2019s new product looks totally fine, but it shouldn\u2019t get anyone excited. I understand why United chose a product like this, but it\u2019s kind of unfortunate how we\u2019re seeing the return of herringbone seats, which are otherwise quite outdated on wide body planes. Ultimately it\u2019s because reverse herringbone seats take up a bit more space, so couldn\u2019t be installed as efficiently.<\/p>\n<p>Based on current products in service, United\u2019s new Polaris business class looks most similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/reviews\/jetblue-mint-suite-a321lr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JetBlue\u2019s Mint business class<\/a>, available primarily on Airbus A321LRs. However, United has figured out a way to achieve an even denser configuration.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/1019006\/OMAAT_InContent --><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.onemileatatime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/JetBlue-Mint-Suite-9.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-252074\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">JetBlue A321LR cabin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So far, the best business class product we\u2019ve seen for narrow body aircraft is probably the <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/stelia-aerospace-opera-business-class-seat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">STELIA OPERA seat<\/a>, which is custom-made for the A321 family, as it\u2019s produced by a subsidiary of Airbus. This is essentially a modified reverse herringbone seat, with the option for a door. This is a great product, especially for a narrow body aircraft.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"\/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/reviews\/ita-airways-business-class-a321neo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ITA Airways\u2019 Airbus A321neos<\/a> feature this product (without a door), and it\u2019s excellent, probably the best narrow body business class I\u2019ve flown.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.onemileatatime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ITA-Airways-Business-Class-A321neo-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-330207\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">ITA Airways A321neo cabin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Seat manufacturer Safran has the VUE product, which is also specifically designed for narrow body aircraft, including the Boeing 737 MAX. <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/news\/flydubai-business-suite\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FlyDubai will be the launch customer<\/a> for this product, but the introduction has been delayed.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"714\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.onemileatatime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Safran-VUE-Seat.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-276346\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Safran VUE narrow body business class seat <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"562\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.onemileatatime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Safran-VUE-Seat-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-276347\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Safran VUE narrow body business class seat <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On the plus side, I\u2019d say all of these concepts are better than the staggered business class seats you\u2019ll find on many Airbus A321LRs, including those of <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/aer-lingus-a321lr-business-class-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aer Lingus<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/tap-a321lr-business-class-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TAP Air Portugal<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/news\/sas-airbus-a321lr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scandinavian Airlines<\/a>. The lack of direct aisle access frustrates many, given how long some of the flights on these planes are.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.onemileatatime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Aer-Lingus-A321LR-Business-Class-8.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-191018\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Aer Lingus A321LR business class cabin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"american_has_similar_plans_for_its_a321xlrs\"\/>American has similar plans for its A321XLRs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>American Airlines was the first major US carrier to <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/american-airlines-a321xlr-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">order the Airbus A321XLR<\/a>, as the airline has also ordered 50, which will be delivered starting later in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Much like United, American plans to install a business class product with fully flat seats and direct aisle access, plus a premium economy cabin. Arguably American has much more of an immediate need for these planes than United does, given that American <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/american-airlines-757-767-retirement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retired its entire Boeing 757 and 767 fleet<\/a> during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>American\u2019s smallest long haul aircraft is the Boeing 787, and that means there are many long haul markets that American can\u2019t currently serve.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"737\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.onemileatatime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/American-Airlines-A321XLR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-188530\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">American Airlines also has 50 A321XLRs on order<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>American Airlines has already <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/news\/new-american-airlines-business-class-seats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revealed its new A321XLR cabins<\/a>. American intends to configure its A321XLRs in a three-cabin layout, with business class, premium economy, and economy. United\u2019s A321XLRs are expected to be in a premium configuration, featuring new Polaris business class seats with direct aisle access and doors, as well as a Premium Plus premium economy cabin.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately what we know so far about the new Polaris business class cabins is at the lower end of my expectations. The airline intends to install quite dense herringbone seats on these planes.
