Would you stand by that?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>KO:<\/strong>\u00a0It\u2019s the minimum and it\u2019s very, very, very hard to get. If you want personal freedom, and you want to not have to answer the phone and do whatever you wish with your time, you\u2019re going to need $5 million in the bank. Not $5 million in housing, and not $5 million in stocks; $5 million liquid.<\/p>\n<p>The absolute hardest is to get the first one, the first million, to have the discipline to save that first million. Then everything gets a lot easier after that because the only way you can save $1 million is to have the discipline back to the very first aspect, that you\u2019re somehow making sure 15 per cent of everything you make is invested in yourself. It\u2019s put aside, but nobody can do it. It\u2019s really, really, really hard. People are weak: \u201cOh, I want those sneakers.\u201d \u201cOh, I want those jeans.\u201d \u201cOh, I want that. I want this.\u201d The answer is \u201cNo, you don\u2019t want that. You want financial freedom when you hit 65.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Kevin\u2019s suggestion, who has $400 million in net worth apparently, also aligns with Suze Orman who doesn\u2019t live in the real-world either.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You might recall from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/weekend-reading-yes-you-can-retire-with-your-millions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this Weekend Reading edition<\/a> that Suze Orman also mentioned $5 million as a starting point for retirement. From Suze:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cThings happen. . . If you have $20, $30, $50 or $100 million, be like me, okay? If you have that kind of money, and you want to retire, fine.\u201d \u2013 Suze Orman.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And maybe worst of all (?), financial expert Dave Ramsey recommended that retirees invest 100% of their assets in equities, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/weekend-reading-8-retirement-withdrawal-rules-no-thanks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from which they could withdraw <strong>8% per year<\/strong> from a portfolio\u2019s starting value<\/a>, with each year\u2019s expenditures adjusted for inflation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mdc-story-body__paragraph__mdc mdc-story-body__block__mdc\">Thus, if inflation was running at 3%, the retiree could\/should withdraw $40,000 in Year 1 from a $500,000 portfolio (8%), then slightly more in Year 2, and withdraw even more in Year 3\u2026.and so on.<\/p>\n<p>The challenge of course with Dave\u2019s thinking is you could literally run out of money <em><strong>within a decade<\/strong> <\/em>at that high withdrawal rate based on sequence of returns risks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pretty dangerous stuff and advice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t follow it at all\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>For fun, to test both Kevin\u2019s and Suze\u2019s claims that you need $5 million to retire, I used a simple calculator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/helpful-sites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from my Helpful Sites page<\/a> that shows how much you could spend and for how long, starting age 60, if you indeed had $5 million invested\u2026<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The results?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Using the FIRECalc tool, you can see that $5 million invested could not only last a VERY long-time but depending on any meaningful returns over a 30-year period, you could end up with A LOT more than that even after a lifetime of very high income spending $175,000 per year and rising every year. That\u2019s being uber-uber conservative. Notes: Without any other information, FIRECalc will assume you want to keep your annual spending about the same for as many years as you specify, you aren\u2019t planning on receiving any Social Security or pension, and your retirement portfolio is invested in a \u201ccouch potato\u201d portfolio of 75% stock index and 25% bond funds, with a 0.18% fee to the fund.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Reading bad financial advice is often bad enough, although comical at times. Following bad, expert financial advice is even worse.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>What do you make of these expert claims by Kevin, Suze and Dave?<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>More Weekend Reading\u2026<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A reminder if you want real help for those of us living in the real-world that will never need such lofty investment numbers to retire comfortably, you are welcome to <em>contact me anytime<\/em> for your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/helpful-sites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>personalized tailored retirement income projections reports at a discount<\/strong><\/a> as a thank-you for being a dedicated <em>My Own Advisor<\/em> reader.<\/p>\n<p>A Wealth of Common Sense highlighted <a href=\"https:\/\/awealthofcommonsense.com\/2024\/12\/the-4-types-of-investment-mistakes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a hierarchy of investment mistakes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Annoying<\/strong> ones \u2013\u00a0things like \u201cselling a winning position too early\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Self-inflicted<\/strong> ones \u2013 things like \u201cpaying egregiously high fees\u201d or \u201cconfusing your time horizon with someone else\u2019s\u2026.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Painful<\/strong> ones \u2013 like timing the market or trying it often.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Endgame <\/strong>ones \u2013 getting sadly wrapped up in frauds or scams.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Dividend Growth Investor suggests for holiday giving, you should consider gifts that can keep on giving decades from now \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dividendgrowthinvestor.com\/2019\/12\/the-gift-that-keeps-on-giving.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dividend paying stocks for kids.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>My friend Tawcan shared some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tawcan.com\/2025-tfsa-contributions-dividend-stocks-were-considering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dividend stocks he is considering to buy in 2025.<\/a> A good list.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From\u00a0<em>The Globe and Mail (subscription), <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/personal-finance\/young-money\/article-affluent-retirees-dont-need-subsidies-from-younger-taxpayers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">affluent retirees don\u2019t need OAS and don\u2019t need subsidies from younger taxpayers<\/a> \u2013 suggesting some serious Old Age Security (OAS) program reform is needed. From the article:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\"><em>\u201cPublic support is on the rise to reduce OAS benefits for affluent seniors, because there are so many better ways to spend tax dollars.
