The northeast of the United States is old. \u00a0I\u2019m not trying to create a mid-life crisis here\u200a\u2014\u200aI\u2019m talking about\u00a0being<\/a>\u00a0historic. Although our nation is still considered\u00a0relatively<\/a>\u00a0young compared to the rest of the world\u200a\u2014\u200awe\u2019ve got some definite historic architecture.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve also got some rural areas that are downright eerie. Some of our fields have the occasional, well placed, 18th century weather-worn-and-wooden barns. Some of our\u00a0cracked<\/a>\u00a0cement highways are traveled only infrequently. And our high-elevation\u00a0mountains<\/a>\u00a0offer the perfect cover to conceal a\u00a0castle\u00a0worthy of Nosferatu himself.<\/p>\n

With unmistakable parallels to the setting of the\u00a0video<\/a>\u00a0game Silent Hill and some sixty miles\u00a0northeast<\/a>\u00a0of Pennsylvania\u2019s capitol of Harrisburg is the town of Centralia. At its height\u200a\u2014\u200aCentralia\u2019s population was about 3,000 in 1890\u200a\u2014\u200abut\u00a0unlike<\/a> other towns\u200a\u2014\u200asomething seemed loom over this mining town.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Like many Pennsylvania communities\u200a\u2014\u200aCentralia was incorporated right after the American\u00a0Civil<\/a>\u00a0War in 1866 as a mining borough\u200a\u2014\u200aits citizens and miners employed by the local Locust Mountain Coal\u00a0and<\/a>\u00a0Iron Company\u200a\u2014\u200aand the mine itself having opened in\u00a01862<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The start<\/strong><\/p>\n

Centralia\u2019s story begins when native Americans would sell their land around what would become the town to European Agents\u00a0around<\/a>\u00a01749. In 1793\u200a\u2014\u200aRobert Morris who was not only signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776 but also was a hero in the Revolutionary War\u2014 acquired land in the valley around what would become the\u00a0town<\/a>. In 1868\u200a\u2014\u200aAlexander Rae who founded the town itself at the end of the Civil War\u200a\u2014\u200awas brutally murdered by the Molly Maguires\u00a0while<\/a>\u00a0en-route\u00a0between<\/a>\u00a0Centralia and Mount Carmel. According to legend\u200a\u2014\u200athe first Roman Catholic Priest to live in Centralia (Father Daniel Ignatius McDermott) was\u00a0assaulted<\/a>\u00a0by several members of the Molly Maguires in 1869 and subsequently cursed the land around the town and proclaimed that nothing but the Church would eventually remain in Centralia. He ended up very close to being right.<\/p>\n

In June of 1948\u200a\u2014\u200ajust three years after the end of World War II\u200a\u2014\u200aUnited Airlines Flight 624 traveling between San Diego and\u00a0New<\/a>\u00a0York crashed into a mountain between the Pennsylvania towns of Aristes and Centralia. The plane went into descent before\u00a0crashing<\/a>. Residents of Centralia helped to bury the victims in St. Ignatius Cemetery.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Fire<\/strong><\/p>\n

But the event that would ultimately doom Centralia happened around Memorial Day of 1962\u200a\u2014\u200awhen a\u00a0crew<\/a>\u00a0doing a controlled burn of a landfill around Centralia did not extinguish the blaze and the fire\u00a0seeped\u00a0into an old mine shaft that was not properly sealed. Over the years\u200a\u2014\u200amillions of dollars were spent by the federal government in\u00a0attempts<\/a>\u00a0to extinguish the fire but every attempt\u00a0found<\/a>\u00a0it to be much larger than originally thought or ran out of funds.<\/p>\n

Over the years as snow\u00a0melted<\/a>\u00a0quickly from the warm ground and\u00a0smoke\u00a0oozed from the rusted vents around the town\u200a\u2014\u200aconcerns grew about Centralia. In 1979\u200a\u2014\u200athen<\/a>\u00a0Mayor John Coddington was forced to close his gas station when fuel in the tanks began to\u00a0boil<\/a>\u00a0underground. In 1981\u200a\u2014\u200aa twelve-year-old boy nearly died when he fell\u00a0into<\/a>\u00a0a 100-foot sinkhole before being pulled out by his cousin. In 1993\u200a\u2014\u200aPennsylvania\u00a0bypassed<\/a>\u00a0route 61\u200a\u2014\u200athe main thoroughfare into town due to fire by the mine.<\/p>\n

After millions were invested to extinguish the fire,\u200aGovernor Bob Casey would claim eminent domain in 1992 which condemned all the borough\u2019s\u00a0structures. In 2009\u200a\u2014\u200athen Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell began evictions for the residents who\u00a0remained<\/a>. In 2002\u200a\u2014\u200aCentralia\u2019s Postal Code was\u00a0removed<\/a>. Today\u200a\u2014\u200athe Municipal Building doesn\u2019t even bear Centralia\u2019s name\u200a\u2014\u200athe remnants of stone walkways indicate where homes used to be. The nearby town of Brynesville was completely vacated\u200a\u2014\u200atoday remaining only by a Shrine at the side of the\u00a0road<\/a>\u00a0and an old garage.<\/p>\n

Now the horror of what happened in Centralia has become historic. The remaining residents settled their lawsuit in 2013\u200a\u2014\u200areceiving<\/a>\u00a0$218,000 in as payment for their homes and the right to stay in their houses for the rest of their lives. After the\u00a0residents\u00a0are deceased \u2014many of the houses constructed with those multiple-chimney looking\u00a0support<\/a>\u00a0buttresses are demolished. When the last five\u00a0residents\u00a0are no longer with\u00a0us<\/a>\u00a0as of the 2020 census\u200a\u2014\u200athe town of Centralia\u200a\u2014\u200ashrouded in a backdrop of steam\u200a\u2014\u200awill be gone forever.<\/p>\n
