\nheights, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>while
\nplacing<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>
\na vainglorious <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>feather
\nin the cap of the investor that discovered it, in <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>the
\nprocess<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>

\nare <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>nothing
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>more<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>
\nthan <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>their
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>exact<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>
\nopposites.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nall the stocks likely to temp<\/span><\/span><\/span>t<\/span><\/span><\/span>
\nan investor into taking a gamble on a future upswing, none are more
\ncompelling than blue chips. These large, household names <\/span><\/span><\/span>have
\na long history of reliable growth, and can prove simply irresistible
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>to<\/span><\/span><\/span>
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>some<\/span><\/span><\/span>,
\nas they view their underperformance as a temporary ordeal, and
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>undoubtedly
\ncertain<\/span><\/span><\/span>
\nto take a positive turn for the better. <\/span><\/span><\/span>It
\nis this logic which makes <\/span><\/span><\/span>their
\nsituation paradoxical; how can such a large company trade at such a
\ncompetitive discount to the overall market? The answer lies in <\/span><\/span><\/span>this
\nsimple <\/span><\/span><\/span>idiom<\/span><\/span><\/span>:
\nwhile the stock market <\/span><\/span><\/span>exists<\/i><\/span><\/span>
\nin the present, its prices are <\/span><\/span><\/span>generally<\/span><\/span><\/span>
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>reflective<\/i><\/span><\/span>
\nof the future. When blue chip stocks trade at a discount, analysts
\nhave deemed that the company\u2019s future earnings are <\/span><\/span><\/span>likely
\nto<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nbe
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>sub-par<\/span><\/span><\/span>,
\nand that <\/span><\/span><\/span>its
\ncurrent price is <\/span><\/span><\/span>more
\nindicative<\/span><\/span><\/span>
\nof the earnings which it is likely to produce. <\/span><\/span><\/span>T<\/span><\/span><\/span>he
\noverriding lesson being presented here<\/span><\/span><\/span>
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>is
\nsimply to<\/span><\/span><\/span>
\nalways beware of the underperforming blue chip that entices you with
\nfuture promises of gold<\/span><\/span><\/span>en
\nreturns<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Little Nugget That Could<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe opposite of this spectrum includes taking a bet on the small, under covered penny stock, whose focus is a relatively obscure section of a certain field. We\u2019ve all heard grandiose stories about the once unknown company which catapulted to prominence, and these tales stoke the flames that we, too, can produce similar results, if we simply find the ideal candidate, at the correct time. Oddly missing in these stories, of course, are the untold number of investors who lost millions of dollars chasing the other penny stocks, over the same period of time, which fizzled into oblivion, and left them licking their proverbial wounds in the aftermath. There\u2019s a good reason why penny stocks are categorized as such, and finding that one winner amongst a sea of failures is tantamount to winning the lottery. I understand that the risk\/reward ratio lies in favor of the investor, but those monies could be much better spent on other candidates with cleaner balance sheets, and much clearer paths to success. <\/p>\n

Both within the stock market and beyond it, whenever we go in pursuit of life\u2019s treasures, we also run the risk of finding ourselves deceived by imitations of the authentic. Our desire to seek the rewards which provide our lives with joy and meaning, exposes us to falsities which can thwart our powers of observation, and trick us into believing that they are, indeed, the prize which we have sought all along. <\/p>\n

These hollow illusions will succeed in their task, only if we refuse to look beneath the veneer of the spurious images on which they project. For when we do, their fragile disguises are finally exposed to the light of day, and we can then confidently marshal on in pursuit of the genuine article.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n
