{"id":192385,"date":"2025-04-19T08:03:28","date_gmt":"2025-04-19T08:03:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/alabama\/alabama-house-of-representatives-passes-the-laken-riley-act\/"},"modified":"2025-04-19T08:03:28","modified_gmt":"2025-04-19T08:03:28","slug":"alabama-house-of-representatives-passes-the-laken-riley-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=192385","title":{"rendered":"Alabama House of Representatives passes the Laken Riley Act"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Alabama House of Representatives passed the Laken Riley Act on Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Laken Riley Act allows state and local law enforcement agencies to enter into a voluntary Memorandum of Understanding with federal law enforcement agencies to enforce existing illegal immigration laws.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAs Alabama continues to deal with an influx of illegal immigrants that entered our state during the previous president\u2019s administration, we need to empower our state and local law enforcement agencies to protect their communities,\u201d\u00a0said Speaker Ledbetter. \u201cPeople who enter this country illegally and commit violent crimes have zero place in our society. This is a commonsense, pro-public safety piece of legislation that is long overdue in our state. I appreciate Rep. Yarbrough\u2019s hard work on this bill and am eager to see it signed into law.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">HB7 was carried by Rep. Ernie Yarbrough, R- Trinity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI appreciate Speaker Ledbetter and my colleagues for supporting this important legislation and taking a significant step toward protecting our state and her people,\u201d said Rep. Yarbrough. \u201cLaken Riley\u2019s death was tragic, and my goal is to help prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the state of Alabama. The bottom line is that this bill isn\u2019t aimed at vilifying immigrants \u2013 it\u2019s about the safety of Alabamians.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Additionally, the legislation would:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Allow state and local government employees to maintain information relating to the immigration status of any individual.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Allow state and local law enforcement officers to transport an undocumented immigrant to the federal government\u2019s custody.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Allow local law enforcement to arrest an undocumented immigrant based on his or her status as an undocumented immigrant or for violating any federal immigration law.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Create standard procedures for the intake and booking of undocumented immigrants and foreign nationals in county and municipal jails.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Require jails to honor immigration detainer requests issued by the Department of Homeland Security in certain circumstances.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s3\">The Laken Riley Act now goes to the Alabama State Senate.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement.
