It catered specifically to<strong class=\"og he\"> tech companies and startups<\/strong>, meaning that many of SVB\u2019s depositors were startup companies.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4f06\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph oe of hd og b oh pc oj ok ol pd on oo op pe or os ot pf ov ow ox pg oz pa pb gw bk\">Tech boomed during the pandemic. This resulted in SVB\u2019s clients depositing large amounts of money. Between the end of 2019 and the first quarter of 2022, deposit balances at SVB more than tripled to <strong class=\"og he\">$200 billion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"25f7\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph oe of hd og b oh pc oj ok ol pd on oo op pe or os ot pf ov ow ox pg oz pa pb gw bk\">Banks are traditionally known for accepting deposit inflows and to give out loans with this money. Deposits make up the liabilities, and loans the assets on a bank\u2019s balance sheet.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c10e\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph oe of hd og b oh pc oj ok ol pd on oo op pe or os ot pf ov ow ox pg oz pa pb gw bk\">With loan demand weak, only a small part of deposits was used for loans. The rest of the deposits also had to be put to work. SVB decided to invest it into <strong class=\"og he\">bonds<\/strong> (long-term US treasuries and agency mortgage-backed securities).<\/p>\n<p id=\"7ef1\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph oe of hd og b oh pc oj ok ol pd on oo op pe or os ot pf ov ow ox pg oz pa pb gw bk\">US treasury securities are low-risk investments that pay out a fixed rate of interest until the bond\u2019s maturity. At maturity you get your principal investment back.
