One thing I\u2019ve learned over the years is I have a much better chance at realizing my\/our goals if I keep tabs on them\u2026I figure you can\u2019t manage what you don\u2019t measure.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve also learned from other savvy DIY investors over the years, individuals that have \u201cbeen there, done that\u201d per se \u2013 what it takes for financial success.<strong> <em>There is huge value in learning lessons from others.<\/em><\/strong> These individuals kindly share their wisdom on this site in the comments section or via emails to me and I publish what I can to reshare all content with you.<\/p>\n<p>The most savvy and successful DIY investors I\u2019ve engaged with over the years do not do anything flashy nor engage in any radical attention-grabbing stuff. They just do the personal finance basics very, very well for a really, really long time:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They don\u2019t invest in meme stocks or fads.<\/li>\n<li>They worked hard to get out of debt and stay out of debt.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They keep their money management fees low by avoiding expensive wealth managers who may not add lots of value \u2013 <strong>they know fees erode performance.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They invest in a diverse basket of stocks or ETFs for income and growth.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They don\u2019t actively trade.<\/li>\n<li>They keep a bunch of cash\/cash equivalents on hand for emergencies or near-term spending as to avoid interrupting their investment portfolios from ongoing compounding power.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They know there is an inverse relationship between following what the financial experts say they should do and their own investment performance and goal-setting \u2013 including what some \u201cexperts\u201d suggest:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"5UehzSQsap\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/weekend-reading-more-experts-saying-you-need-5-million-to-retire\/\">Weekend Reading \u2013 More experts saying you need $5 million to retire<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content lazyload\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cWeekend Reading \u2013 More experts saying you need $5 million to retire\u201d \u2014 My Own Advisor\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/weekend-reading-more-experts-saying-you-need-5-million-to-retire\/embed\/#?secret=V1bhiwaKbW#?secret=5UehzSQsap\" data-secret=\"5UehzSQsap\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"mv-ad-box\" data-slotid=\"content_btf\">\n<div class=\"mv-rail-frame-250\" data-slotid=\"content_btf\">\n<div class=\"mv-rail-slide-250 mv-inview-sticky\" data-slotid=\"content_btf\">\n<div class=\"mv-rail-sticky-250 mv-inview-sticky\" data-slotid=\"content_btf\">\n<div id=\"content_btf_wrapper\" class=\"adunitwrapper content_btf_wrapper mv-size-728x250\" data-wrapper=\"content_btf\" data-nosnippet=\"\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #555555;\">I\u2019ve tried to take and learn from what these successful DIY folks have accomplished in their own lives to tailor my own (<em>My Own Advisor<\/em>) path. That includes some annual goal setting and monitoring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Given we were <em>sooo close<\/em> to financial independence at the beginning of 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/2024-financial-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">you might recall we only had two big financial goals for this year:<\/a><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Max out our RRSP contribution room by April 2024.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Save for our 2025 TFSA contribution room by September 2024.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>That was it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-slot-rendered-content=\"true\">Well, after we retired our mortgage in early January this year, and after we bought our new PHEV this summer, we diverted savings to near-term investing \u2013 as a final push towards fulfilling some potential semi-retirement dreams for 2025.<\/p>\n<p data-slot-rendered-content=\"true\">Related to the 2024 financial goals above, we did max out our 2024 RRSP contributions and we also managed to save up next week\u2019s 2025 TFSA contributions as well. I\u2019ll be making my etransfers to our TFSAs next week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-slot-rendered-content=\"true\">In addition to the above, we also managed to save up\/confirm at the end of 2024 we have ~ 1-years\u2019 worth of expenses saved in cash\/cash equivalents across all our various accounts (including my corporation) to cover basic living expenses if\/when\/should we need to use that.<\/p>\n<p>Although I can\u2019t speak for you, keeping cash\/cash equivalents on hand does offer us a very meaningful sleep-at-night factor that\u2019s very hard to ignore.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201c<em><strong>We do it because cash is the oxygen of independence, and \u2013 more importantly \u2013 we never want to be forced to sell the stocks we own.\u201d \u2013\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/the-psychology-of-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Psychology of Money<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>What\u2019s up for 2025? Any goal setting?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Well, I\u2019m not quite there yet mentally. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"giphy-embed lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/872o15eAXFBw66UfNl\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/nickjonas-nick-jonas-872o15eAXFBw66UfNl\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m enjoying some holiday time with family right now. At some point, my attention will turn to goal-setting or at least some meaningful cashflow planning for 2025 given some transition from full-time work to part-time work may occur for me. I\u2019m excited for that and I hope to learn more about that in January. Whatever I learn, I will keep you posted!<\/p>\n<p>In closing, goal-setting is an important exercise for many things in life. One thing I\u2019ve learned over the years is I have a much better chance at realizing my\/our goals if I keep tabs on them\u2026I figure you can\u2019t manage what you don\u2019t measure.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve also learned from other savvy DIY investors over the years, individuals that have \u201cbeen there, done that\u201d per se \u2013 what it takes for financial success.<strong> <em>There is huge value in learning lessons from others.<\/em><\/strong> These individuals kindly share their wisdom on this site in the comments section or via emails to me and I publish what I can to reshare all content with you.<\/p>\n<p>The most savvy and successful DIY investors I\u2019ve engaged with over the years do not do anything flashy nor engage in any radical attention-grabbing stuff. They just do the personal finance basics very, very well for a really, really long time:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They don\u2019t invest in meme stocks or fads.<\/li>\n<li>They worked hard to get out of debt and stay out of debt.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They keep their money management fees low by avoiding expensive wealth managers who may not add lots of value \u2013 <strong>they know fees erode performance.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They invest in a diverse basket of stocks or ETFs for income and growth.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They don\u2019t actively trade.<\/li>\n<li>They keep a bunch of cash\/cash equivalents on hand for emergencies or near-term spending as to avoid interrupting their investment portfolios from ongoing compounding power.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They know there is an inverse relationship between following what the financial experts say they should do and their own investment performance and goal-setting \u2013 including what some \u201cexperts\u201d suggest:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"5UehzSQsap\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/weekend-reading-more-experts-saying-you-need-5-million-to-retire\/\">Weekend Reading \u2013 More experts saying you need $5 million to retire<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content lazyload\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cWeekend Reading \u2013 More experts saying you need $5 million to retire\u201d \u2014 My Own Advisor\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/weekend-reading-more-experts-saying-you-need-5-million-to-retire\/embed\/#?secret=V1bhiwaKbW#?secret=5UehzSQsap\" data-secret=\"5UehzSQsap\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"mv-ad-box\" data-slotid=\"content_btf\">\n<div class=\"mv-rail-frame-250\" data-slotid=\"content_btf\">\n<div class=\"mv-rail-slide-250 mv-inview-sticky\" data-slotid=\"content_btf\">\n<div class=\"mv-rail-sticky-250 mv-inview-sticky\" data-slotid=\"content_btf\">\n<div id=\"content_btf_wrapper\" class=\"adunitwrapper content_btf_wrapper mv-size-728x250\" data-wrapper=\"content_btf\" data-nosnippet=\"\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #555555;\">I\u2019ve tried to take and learn from what these successful DIY folks have accomplished in their own lives to tailor my own (<em>My Own Advisor<\/em>) path. That includes some annual goal setting and monitoring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Given we were <em>sooo close<\/em> to financial independence at the beginning of 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/2024-financial-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">you might recall we only had two big financial goals for this year:<\/a><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Max out our RRSP contribution room by April 2024.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Save for our 2025 TFSA contribution room by September 2024.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>That was it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-slot-rendered-content=\"true\">Well, after we retired our mortgage in early January this year, and after we bought our new PHEV this summer, we diverted savings to near-term investing \u2013 as a final push towards fulfilling some potential semi-retirement dreams for 2025.<\/p>\n<p data-slot-rendered-content=\"true\">Related to the 2024 financial goals above, we did max out our 2024 RRSP contributions and we also managed to save up next week\u2019s 2025 TFSA contributions as well. I\u2019ll be making my etransfers to our TFSAs next week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-slot-rendered-content=\"true\">In addition to the above, we also managed to save up\/confirm at the end of 2024 we have ~ 1-years\u2019 worth of expenses saved in cash\/cash equivalents across all our various accounts (including my corporation) to cover basic living expenses if\/when\/should we need to use that.<\/p>\n<p>Although I can\u2019t speak for you, keeping cash\/cash equivalents on hand does offer us a very meaningful sleep-at-night factor that\u2019s very hard to ignore.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201c<em><strong>We do it because cash is the oxygen of independence, and \u2013 more importantly \u2013 we never want to be forced to sell the stocks we own.\u201d \u2013\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/the-psychology-of-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Psychology of Money<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>What\u2019s up for 2025? At some point, my attention will turn to goal-setting or at least some meaningful cashflow planning for 2025 given some transition from full-time work to part-time work may occur for me. I\u2019m excited for that and I hope to learn more about that in January. Whatever I learn, I will keep you posted!<\/p>\n<p>In closing, goal-setting is an important exercise for many things in life. One thing I\u2019ve learned over the years is I have a much better chance at realizing my\/our goals if I keep tabs on them\u2026I figure you can\u2019t manage what you don\u2019t measure.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve also learned from other savvy DIY investors over the years, individuals that have \u201cbeen there, done that\u201d per se \u2013 what it takes for financial success.<strong> <em>There is huge value in learning lessons from others.<\/em><\/strong> These individuals kindly share their wisdom on this site in the comments section or via emails to me and I publish what I can to reshare all content with you.<\/p>\n<p>The most savvy and successful DIY investors I\u2019ve engaged with over the years do not do anything flashy nor engage in any radical attention-grabbing stuff. They just do the personal finance basics very, very well for a really, really long time:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They don\u2019t invest in meme stocks or fads.<\/li>\n<li>They worked hard to get out of debt and stay out of debt.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They keep their money management fees low by avoiding expensive wealth managers who may not add lots of value \u2013 <strong>they know fees erode performance.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They invest in a diverse basket of stocks or ETFs for income and growth.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They don\u2019t actively trade.<\/li>\n<li>They keep a bunch of cash\/cash equivalents on hand for emergencies or near-term spending as to avoid interrupting their investment portfolios from ongoing compounding power.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They know there is an inverse relationship between following what the financial experts say they should do and their own investment performance and goal-setting \u2013 including what some \u201cexperts\u201d suggest:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"5UehzSQsap\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/weekend-reading-more-experts-saying-you-need-5-million-to-retire\/\">Weekend Reading \u2013 More experts saying you need $5 million to retire<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content lazyload\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cWeekend Reading \u2013 More experts saying you need $5 million to retire\u201d \u2014 My Own Advisor\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/weekend-reading-more-experts-saying-you-need-5-million-to-retire\/embed\/#?secret=V1bhiwaKbW#?secret=5UehzSQsap\" data-secret=\"5UehzSQsap\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"mv-ad-box\" data-slotid=\"content_btf\">\n<div class=\"mv-rail-frame-250\" data-slotid=\"content_btf\">\n<div class=\"mv-rail-slide-250 mv-inview-sticky\" data-slotid=\"content_btf\">\n<div class=\"mv-rail-sticky-250 mv-inview-sticky\" data-slotid=\"content_btf\">\n<div id=\"content_btf_wrapper\" class=\"adunitwrapper content_btf_wrapper mv-size-728x250\" data-wrapper=\"content_btf\" data-nosnippet=\"\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #555555;\">I\u2019ve tried to take and learn from what these successful DIY folks have accomplished in their own lives to tailor my own (<em>My Own Advisor<\/em>) path. That includes some annual goal setting and monitoring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Given we were <em>sooo close<\/em> to financial independence at the beginning of 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/2024-financial-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">you might recall we only had two big financial goals for this year:<\/a><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Max out our RRSP contribution room by April 2024.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Save for our 2025 TFSA contribution room by September 2024.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>That was it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-slot-rendered-content=\"true\">Well, after we retired our mortgage in early January this year, and after we bought our new PHEV this summer, we diverted savings to near-term investing \u2013 as a final push towards fulfilling some potential semi-retirement dreams for 2025.<\/p>\n<p data-slot-rendered-content=\"true\">Related to the 2024 financial goals above, we did max out our 2024 RRSP contributions and we also managed to save up next week\u2019s 2025 TFSA contributions as well. I\u2019ll be making my etransfers to our TFSAs next week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-slot-rendered-content=\"true\">In addition to the above, we also managed to save up\/confirm at the end of 2024 we have ~ 1-years\u2019 worth of expenses saved in cash\/cash equivalents across all our various accounts (including my corporation) to cover basic living expenses if\/when\/should we need to use that.<\/p>\n<p>Although I can\u2019t speak for you, keeping cash\/cash equivalents on hand does offer us a very meaningful sleep-at-night factor that\u2019s very hard to ignore.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201c<em><strong>We do it because cash is the oxygen of independence, and \u2013 more importantly \u2013 we never want to be forced to sell the stocks we own.\u201d \u2013\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/the-psychology-of-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Psychology of Money<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>What\u2019s up for 2025? At some point, my attention will turn to goal-setting or at least some meaningful cashflow planning for 2025 given some transition from full-time work to part-time work may occur for me. I\u2019m excited for that and I hope to learn more about that in January. Whatever I learn, I will keep you posted!<\/p>\n<p>In closing, goal-setting is an important exercise for many things in life. One thing I\u2019ve learned over the years is I have a much better chance at realizing my\/our goals if I keep tabs on them\u2026I figure you can\u2019t manage what you don\u2019t measure.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve also learned from other savvy DIY investors over the years, individuals that have \u201cbeen there, done that\u201d per se \u2013 what it takes for financial success.<strong> <em>There is huge value in learning lessons from others.<\/em><\/strong> These individuals kindly share their wisdom on this site in the comments section or via emails to me and I publish what I can to reshare all content with you.<\/p>\n<p>The most savvy and successful DIY investors I\u2019ve engaged with over the years do not do anything flashy nor engage in any radical attention-grabbing stuff. They just do the personal finance basics very, very well for a really, really long time:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They don\u2019t invest in meme stocks or fads.<\/li>\n<li>They worked hard to get out of debt and stay out of debt.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They keep their money management fees low by avoiding expensive wealth managers who may not add lots of value \u2013 <strong>they know fees erode performance.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They invest in a diverse basket of stocks or ETFs for income and growth.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They don\u2019t actively trade.<\/li>\n<li>They keep a bunch of cash\/cash equivalents on hand for emergencies or near-term spending as to avoid interrupting their investment portfolios from ongoing compounding power.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They know there is an inverse relationship between following what the financial experts say they should do and their own investment performance and goal-setting \u2013 including what some \u201cexperts\u201d suggest:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"5UehzSQsap\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/weekend-reading-more-experts-saying-you-need-5-million-to-retire\/\">Weekend Reading \u2013 More experts saying you need $5 million to retire<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content lazyload\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cWeekend Reading \u2013 More experts saying you need $5 million to retire\u201d \u2014 My Own Advisor\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/weekend-reading-more-experts-saying-you-need-5-million-to-retire\/embed\/#?secret=V1bhiwaKbW#?secret=5UehzSQsap\" data-secret=\"5UehzSQsap\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"mv-ad-box\" data-slotid=\"content_btf\">\n<div class=\"mv-rail-frame-250\" data-slotid=\"content_btf\">\n<div class=\"mv-rail-slide-250 mv-inview-sticky\" data-slotid=\"content_btf\">\n<div class=\"mv-rail-sticky-250 mv-inview-sticky\" data-slotid=\"content_btf\">\n<div id=\"content_btf_wrapper\" class=\"adunitwrapper content_btf_wrapper mv-size-728x250\" data-wrapper=\"content_btf\" data-nosnippet=\"\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #555555;\">I\u2019ve tried to take and learn from what these successful DIY folks have accomplished in their own lives to tailor my own (<em>My Own Advisor<\/em>) path. That includes some annual goal setting and monitoring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Given we were <em>sooo close<\/em> to financial independence at the beginning of 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/2024-financial-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">you might recall we only had two big financial goals for this year:<\/a><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Max out our RRSP contribution room by April 2024.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Save for our 2025 TFSA contribution room by September 2024.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>That was it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-slot-rendered-content=\"true\">Well, after we retired our mortgage in early January this year, and after we bought our new PHEV this summer, we diverted savings to near-term investing \u2013 as a final push towards fulfilling some potential semi-retirement dreams for 2025.<\/p>\n<p data-slot-rendered-content=\"true\">Related to the 2024 financial goals above, we did max out our 2024 RRSP contributions and we also managed to save up next week\u2019s 2025 TFSA contributions as well. I\u2019ll be making my etransfers to our TFSAs next week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-slot-rendered-content=\"true\">In addition to the above, we also managed to save up\/confirm at the end of 2024 we have ~ 1-years\u2019 worth of expenses saved in cash\/cash equivalents across all our various accounts (including my corporation) to cover basic living expenses if\/when\/should we need to use that.<\/p>\n<p>Although I can\u2019t speak for you, keeping cash\/cash equivalents on hand does offer us a very meaningful sleep-at-night factor that\u2019s very hard to ignore.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201c<em><strong>We do it because cash is the oxygen of independence, and \u2013 more importantly \u2013 we never want to be forced to sell the stocks we own.\u201d \u2013\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/the-psychology-of-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Psychology of Money<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>What\u2019s up for 2025? Any goal setting?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Well, I\u2019m not quite there yet mentally. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"giphy-embed lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/872o15eAXFBw66UfNl\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/nickjonas-nick-jonas-872o15eAXFBw66UfNl\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m enjoying some holiday time with family right now. At some point, my attention will turn to goal-setting or at least some meaningful cashflow planning for 2025 given some transition from full-time work to part-time work may occur for me.
