Ever wondered if your savings account interest is unbiblical?<\/h4>\n

You\u2019re not alone. The question of whether charging interest aligns with biblical teachings has puzzled believers for centuries. <\/p>\n

Let\u2019s dive into this topic, starting with a verse that seems to bring the hammer down on interest altogether.<\/p>\n

Ezekiel 18:13\u2026<\/h3>\n

\u201cHe lends at interest and takes a profit. Will such a man live? He will not! Because he has done all these detestable things, he is to be put to death; his blood will be on his own head.\u201d (NIV)<\/h5>\n

That\u2019s pretty intense, right? <\/p>\n

But before you rush to close all your interest-bearing accounts, let\u2019s zoom out and look at the bigger picture.<\/p>\n

Is charging interest unbiblical?<\/h3>\n

The Law of Moses had some clear guidelines about lending:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. No charging interest to the needy (Exodus 22:25)<\/li>\n
  2. Help out struggling neighbors without expecting extra (Leviticus 25:35-37)<\/li>\n
  3. Keep it interest-free within the Israelite community (Deuteronomy 23:19-20)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    But here\u2019s an interesting twist \u2013 that last rule actually says it\u2019s okay to charge foreigners interest. <\/p>\n

    So it wasn\u2019t a blanket \u201cinterest is evil\u201d situation.<\/p>\n

    Exceptions to the Rule<\/h3>\n

    That\u2019s right, the Bible actually gives a green light to charge interest in some cases in Deuteronomy 23:20:<\/p>\n

    \u201cYou may charge a foreigner interest, but not a fellow Israelite\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

    It seems the main concern was avoiding exploitation within the community, not banning interest altogether.<\/p>\n

    What Did Jesus Say About Interest?<\/h3>\n

    Fast forward to the New Testament. Jesus doesn\u2019t directly address interest, but He does tell some interesting parables that have implications:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. The Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30): A master expects his servants to invest and earn more.<\/li>\n
    2. The Parable of the Ten Minas (Luke 19:12-27): Another story about a nobleman expecting his servants to make a profit.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Additionally, in both parables the master specifically rebuked the 3rd servant by saying \u201cwhy didn\u2019t you at least put my money in the bank to earn some interest on it?\u201d<\/p>\n

      So it doesn\u2019t seem that Jesus is condemning earning interest in these stories. In fact, it seems to be part of the expected behavior.<\/p>\n

      So, Is Earning Interest Against Biblical Principles?<\/h2>\n

      Not necessarily. The Bible seems more concerned with the heart behind financial dealings than with banning interest outright. <\/p>\n

      I believe it\u2019s about finding that sweet spot between smart financial management and showing compassion.<\/p>\n

      Next time you\u2019re making a money decision, ask yourself: Am I being fair? Am I helping or exploiting? Am I showing integrity?<\/p>\n
