This week Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/04\/16\/syndicate-kennedy-pledges-to-figure-out-which-environmental-toxins-are-causing-autism-00293583\">launched<\/a> a sweeping initiative to investigate potential links between environmental toxins \u2014 such as pesticides, food additives, and mold \u2014 and chronic conditions such as autism.<\/p>\n<p>In a speech he delivered in Indiana, Kennedy announced he\u2019ll find the \u201ccause\u201d of autism by September (that alone contradicts the scientific process \u2014 you\u2019re supposed to start with a hypothesis, not a conclusion). Yet this aggressive approach is unsurprising as Kennedy has long blamed these \u201ctoxins\u201d for a whole host of health issues, despite no evidence to support his claims.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"US Health Secretary RFK Jr claims autistic children &#039;will never hold jobs, go on dates&#039;\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eaNhUvJyWUo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>But here\u2019s the catch: Many of these questions have already been asked \u2014 and answered. Scientists have conducted extensive research on these very substances, including epidemiological studies, toxicological reviews, and regulatory assessments. The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act requires a time-consuming and costly review of pesticides before they can be released for commercial use, and it mandates regular and routine assessments to ensure continuing safety. The regulatory scheme is no joke. On average, it takes over 11 years for a new pesticide\u2019s active ingredient to progress from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmprogress.com\/tree-nuts\/-discovery-to-launch-the-slow-road-to-bring-pesticides-to-market\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">discovery to market launch<\/a>, and it costs around $286 million.<\/p>\n<p>While no system is perfect, these studies have been peer-reviewed, replicated, and in many cases, used to shape public health policy. But Kennedy\u2019s announcement sure sounds like he wants to cover old ground, despite the fact that he can\u2019t point to any methodological flaws in the scientific studies we already have. And he has no evidence that any of his boogeymen are linked to chronic illness (Kennedy didn\u2019t mention vaccines in his speech, but he did refer to \u201cmedicines\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Elon Musk\u2019s Department of Government Efficiency is tearing through the federal government without mercy. DOGE is supposed to represent a mindset of streamlined work, doing more with less, and avoiding redundant efforts. That\u2019s a serious charge \u2014 and one that deserves scrutiny \u2014 but it can\u2019t be a stand-in for scientific critique. <em>If there\u2019s an actual problem with the research, point to the flaw. Show where the data was manipulated. Challenge the methodology. That\u2019s how science works.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s not what\u2019s happening here.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Kennedy is waving off an entire body of research based on who compensated the scientists, not what the research found or how it was conducted. It\u2019s a clever move because it allows him to cast doubt without doing the hard work of disproving anything. It\u2019s a tactic that plays well with populist distrust in institutions, but it falls apart under scientific standards.<\/p>\n<p>It also reveals Kennedy\u2019s hypocrisy. In late 2024, before his confirmation to HHS, Kennedy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supplysidesj.com\/supplements\/dietary-supplement-industry-cheers-rfk-jr-s-hhs-nomination\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">criticized<\/a> the Food and Drug Administration for its \u201caggressive suppression\u201d of various health products, including vitamins and nutraceuticals. Supplements are often unregulated and untested. But when studies (of dubious reliability) are conducted, it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supplysidesj.com\/claims\/clinical-trials-two-thirds-of-supplement-companies-support-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mostly industry funded<\/a>. Apparently Kennedy only has a problem with industry-funded research when the industry doesn\u2019t align with his views.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, industry funding deserves transparency. Yes, conflicts of interest should be disclosed. But those concerns are already baked into the scientific process. Disclosure rules exist. Peer review exists. Replication exists. And importantly, the burden of proof is on Kennedy to show that specific findings were wrong \u2014 not just that he doesn\u2019t like who paid for them.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, we\u2019re not doing science \u2014 we\u2019re just relitigating conclusions because someone didn\u2019t like the answer the first time. We\u2019d toss out data from the EPA, USDA, FDA, and CDC \u2014 not because the science is wrong, but because Kennedy doesn\u2019t like the backers. He would create an organic utopia where only supplement hawkers can fully understand the truth. That\u2019s not precaution; that\u2019s paranoia.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t throw out a solid study because it had industry funding any more than you throw out a bridge design because it was sponsored by an engineering firm. If the data checks out and the method is sound, you move forward. That\u2019s how public health advances \u2014 not by spinning its wheels every time some radical activist claims \u201cbias.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy\u2019s focus is dragging us backwards. We don\u2019t need to study whether vaccines (or whatever he means by \u201cmedicines\u201d) cause autism; we know very well that they don\u2019t. Why the heck are we wasting time, money and resources on such an inquiry? There is no shortage of real, current public health challenges that need a unified, intentional focus.<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy and Musk\u2019s visions aren\u2019t compatible. And you don\u2019t have to like either of them or their methods to recognize that fact.
