{"id":19124,"date":"2025-01-09T15:30:05","date_gmt":"2025-01-09T15:30:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/business\/finance\/donald-trump-pushes-back-ukraine-war-deadline-in-sign-of-support-for-kyiv\/"},"modified":"2025-01-09T15:30:05","modified_gmt":"2025-01-09T15:30:05","slug":"donald-trump-pushes-back-ukraine-war-deadline-in-sign-of-support-for-kyiv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=19124","title":{"rendered":"Donald Trump pushes back Ukraine war deadline in sign of support for Kyiv"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Unlock the White House Watch newsletter for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\">Your guide to what the 2024 US election means for Washington and the world<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=989dc02e-2a13-4c21-8ad0-0b32e098c410&amp;newsletter-id=65b8fec772badb00166eafc6\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>US president-elect Donald Trump has pushed back his campaign pledge to end the war in Ukraine in \u201c24 hours\u201d to several months, in a shift European partners have interpreted as a sign that his administration will not immediately abandon support for Kyiv.<\/p>\n<p>Two European officials told the Financial Times that discussions with Trump\u2019s incoming team in recent weeks revealed they had not yet decided on how to solve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/war-in-ukraine\" data-trackable=\"link\">the conflict<\/a>, and that support to Ukraine would continue after the US president\u2019s inauguration on January 20.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whole [Trump] team is obsessed with strength and looking strong, so they\u2019re recalibrating the Ukraine approach,\u201d said one of the officials. <\/p>\n<p>The incoming administration was also wary of comparisons being made with Joe Biden\u2019s calamitous US withdrawal from Afghanistan, which was something the Trump camp would not like to see repeated in Ukraine, the official added.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/donald-trump\" data-trackable=\"link\">Trump<\/a> earlier this week suggested that \u201csix months\u201d was a more realistic target to end the war. His appointee as special envoy for the war in Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, told Fox News on Wednesday that the aim was to stop the conflict in \u201c100 days\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to set a goal on a personal and professional level \u2014 I would set it at 100 days and move all the way back,\u201d Kellogg told Fox News when asked about a Ukraine peace deal. \u201cAnd figure a way we can do this in the near term, to make sure the solution is solid and it\u2019s sustainable and that this war ends so that we stop the carnage.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>European leaders and officials have been making the case to Trump and his team that continued US military aid is needed to put Kyiv in a stronger position for peace talks and help bring Moscow to the negotiating table, nearly three years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion. <\/p>\n<p>French officials said last month that strengthening Ukraine\u2019s position on the battlefield meant stopping Russia\u2019s advances in the east of the country because there would be no talks if Moscow was still taking territory.<\/p>\n<p>Washington\u2019s continued military support is crucial for Ukraine\u2019s defence, even as European nations have also contributed with armament and a significant financial lifeline to Kyiv.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"n-content-image n-content-image--full\" data-component=\"image-set\"><picture><source media=\"(min-width: 700px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/ftcms%3A09bee64c-70fd-4c5f-bc95-fe0e35c8be16?source=next-article&amp;fit=scale-down&amp;quality=highest&amp;width=700&amp;dpr=1 1x,https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/ftcms%3A09bee64c-70fd-4c5f-bc95-fe0e35c8be16?source=next-article&amp;fit=scale-down&amp;quality=highest&amp;width=700&amp;dpr=2 2x,https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/ftcms%3A09bee64c-70fd-4c5f-bc95-fe0e35c8be16?source=next-article&amp;fit=scale-down&amp;quality=highest&amp;width=700&amp;dpr=3 3x\" width=\"2129\" height=\"1419\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/https%3A%2F%2Fd1e00ek4ebabms.cloudfront.net%2Fproduction%2F09bee64c-70fd-4c5f-bc95-fe0e35c8be16.jpg?source=next-article&amp;fit=scale-down&amp;quality=highest&amp;width=700&amp;dpr=1\" alt=\"Italy\u2019s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni talking with US President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-A-Lago\" data-image-type=\"image\" width=\"2129\" height=\"1419\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/picture><figcaption class=\"n-content-picture__caption\"><span>Giorgia Meloni, who met Donald Trump last week, says she could not foresee a US disengagement<\/span><span> <!-- -->\u00a9 Palazzo Chigi press office\/AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who met Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort last week, has ruled out that Washington would \u201cabandon\u201d Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t foresee a US disengagement,\u201d she said in a news conference on Thursday, adding that Trump had proven capable of blending diplomacy with deterrence. \u201cOn peace, Trump may be someone who is moving forward towards a solution, but I don\u2019t think that means abandoning Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meloni said that Ukraine would have to receive concrete security guarantees as part of any potential diplomatic deal to end the active conflict.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecurity guarantees are fundamental if we actually aspire to have peace in Ukraine,\u201d she said. \u201cWe all know that in the past Russia has violated the agreements that it has signed. Without security guarantees, we cannot have certainty that will not happen again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has sought to persuade Washington and other Nato allies to anchor those security guarantees in a concrete timeline for his country to join the US-led defence alliance. He is very worried about how the world will look after the war,\u201d the former senior Kremlin official said. \u201cTrump wants to roll back Nato anyway.
