Those small, seemingly harmless expenses? They were quietly draining my bank account.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, I\u2019m sharing the real-life spending habits that were costing me hundreds, sometimes thousands, of dollars a year, and more importantly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clevergirlfinance.com\/money-leaks\/\">how I stopped the money leaks<\/a>. If you\u2019re trying to figure out how to stop wasting money, let these tips inspire your own financial audit.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-subscriptions-i-had-them-all\">1. Subscriptions: I had them all<\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with my biggest wake-up call: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_streaming_media_services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">streaming services<\/a>. I had every platform imaginable: Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Apple TV, Prime Video, Paramount+, Peacock. And to top it off, we were also paying for cable (because my husband can\u2019t miss live sports).<\/p>\n<p>Even worse? I was double paying for some subscriptions. I had Disney+ signed up twice under different emails and was paying for Peacock through both cable and streaming.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-my-rules-for-streaming-smarter\">My rules for streaming smarter<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I listed all my subscriptions and totaled the monthly cost. The number shocked me.<\/li>\n<li>I canceled the ones we rarely used and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/services-and-software\/dont-quit-these-streaming-services-just-yet-in-january-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">started rotating streaming services <\/a>instead of keeping them all year-round.<\/li>\n<li>I also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.equifax.com\/personal\/education\/personal-finance\/articles\/-\/learn\/negotiate-payments-cable-wireless-provider\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">negotiated our cable bill<\/a> for a better deal.<\/li>\n<li>For any subscription that offers a free trial, especially with apps, I put an alert in my calendar to revisit the subscription before the trial ends.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Total savings:<\/strong> Over <strong>$800 per year<\/strong>\u2014just from streaming!<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-business-expenses-i-didn-t-need\">2. Business expenses I didn\u2019t need<\/h2>\n<p>As a business owner, it\u2019s easy to justify every tool and subscription as \u201cessential.\u201d But when I finally reviewed my business expenses, I realized I was paying for multiple social media schedulers, stock photo memberships, and video editing tools\u2014many of which had overlapping features.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-streamlining-my-tools\">Streamlining my tools<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I canceled the subscriptions I barely used.<\/li>\n<li>I consolidated tools, choosing only the ones that offered the most value.<\/li>\n<li>I set a quarterly reminder to audit my business expenses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The result? Hundreds of dollars saved each month and no drop in productivity.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-fast-food-spending-on-the-go\">3. Fast food spending on the go<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re a parent, you know the chaos of running kids from one activity to the next. I was grabbing fast food more often than I realized $10 here, $15 there. It seemed harmless until I added it up.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-shifting-to-budget-friendly-meal-planning\">Shifting to budget-friendly meal planning<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I started packing snacks and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clevergirlfinance.com\/easy-one-pot-meals\/\">easy meals<\/a> before we left the house.<\/li>\n<li>I kept water bottles, juice boxes, and snack bars in the car.<\/li>\n<li>I gave myself a realistic fast food budget, so when we do eat out, it\u2019s intentional.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Bonus:<\/strong> It\u2019s healthier and way more affordable.<\/p>\n<p>My grocery bill was a sneaky budget killer for me. Every time I walked into the store hungry, I came out with snacks and extras I never planned to buy. And if I was out and hungry? I\u2019d splurge on an overpriced meal without thinking.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-outsmarting-my-snack-driven-spending\">Outsmarting my snack-driven spending<\/h3>\n<p>This small change made a huge difference in curbing unplanned spending.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-not-returning-items-i-didn-t-need\">5. I used to be the queen of buying something, realizing it wasn\u2019t quite right, and then letting the return window pass. $20 here, $50 there.
