A<\/span> fresh <\/span>exploration of the <\/span>life <\/span>and work <\/span>of <\/span>American <\/span>expat<\/span>riate<\/span> artist Julius LeBlanc Stewart (1855-1919), <\/span>whose <\/span>depictions<\/span> of <\/span>expat high society <\/span>in Paris <\/span>won <\/span>acclaim <\/span>in Europe and the United States and <\/span>still <\/span>feature in <\/span>museums <\/span>and collections <\/span>on both sides of the Atlantic. <\/span>Stewart\u2019s <\/span>oil <\/span>paintings <\/span>capture <\/span>the <\/span>opulent lifestyle of his charmed circle<\/span>\u2014their soirees, excursions, and<\/span> leisure <\/span>pursuits<\/span>. <\/span>The <\/span>book <\/span>presents over <\/span>seventy<\/span> major <\/span>paintings, pastels<\/span>,<\/span> and drawings<\/span>. <\/span>Its<\/span> nine <\/span>essays look at Stewart\u2019s training at the \u00c9cole des Beaux-Arts, his tutelage under French and Spanish masters, <\/span>and <\/span>his family\u2019s involvement in the production of sugar<\/span> in Cuba<\/span>.
