Did you ever think you’d live to see the day when you could buy a car on Amazon? Well, it’s happened! In December, the online retailer launched the Amazon Autos program, which allows consumers to buy their car through the Amazon app or website. While it is limited in its offerings and locations currently, Amazon plans to expand its Auto program over the next year. Believe it or not, people might start turning to the retail giant for their car needs too. Before you go buying cars on Amazon, here are six things you should know.

1. Research the Vehicle Listings Thoroughly

Review the description carefully for details on the car’s model, year, mileage, and condition. Look for high-resolution images and ensure they match the description provided. Double-check reviews and ratings for both the car and the seller to confirm reliability. Without adequate research, you could end up with a vehicle that doesn’t meet your expectations or needs. You won’t be able to test drive the car before you buy it, so you want to be sure it is going to check all your boxes before you hit “buy.”

2. Understand Amazon’s Role in the Transaction

Amazon acts as a marketplace rather than a direct seller for most cars. While the platform facilitates the listing, the actual purchase process often involves communicating with the dealership outside Amazon’s ecosystem. This means you’ll need to negotiate terms such as financing, delivery, or warranty directly with the seller. Amazon’s customer support may not cover issues arising after the purchase, so clarify the seller’s policies before committing. Knowing Amazon’s limited role can help you avoid unnecessary confusion later.

3. Check for Warranties and Return Policies

One of the biggest concerns when buying a car online is what happens if something goes wrong. Verify whether the car comes with a manufacturer’s warranty or a dealership-backed guarantee. Some listings may offer return policies, but these often come with strict conditions and restocking fees. Always read the fine print to understand your rights as a buyer and any costs you might incur if the vehicle doesn’t meet your standards. A clear understanding of warranties and return policies will provide peace of mind.

4. Inspect the Vehicle Before Finalizing the Deal

Buying a car sight unseen can be risky. Amazon typically doesn’t allow for test drives, so it’s essential to arrange a pre-purchase inspection with the seller. If an in-person inspection isn’t possible, request a detailed video walkthrough or additional photos from the seller. Don’t finalize the purchase until you’re confident about the vehicle’s quality and condition. An inspection ensures you’re getting what you pay for.

5. Beware of Hidden Fees and Extra Costs

The price listed on Amazon might not include taxes, registration fees, delivery charges, or other additional costs. These hidden expenses can significantly increase the final price of the vehicle. Contact the seller to get a complete breakdown of all costs before making a purchase. Additionally, check for financing options or promotions, as some sellers may offer deals through their own channels. Knowing the total cost upfront will prevent surprises and help you stay within your budget.

6. Confirm Delivery and Shipping Details

Buying a car on Amazon often involves arranging for its delivery, which can vary depending on the seller’s location. Ensure you understand the shipping terms, including costs, timelines, and whether delivery is included in the purchase price. Some sellers might offer free delivery, while others could charge hundreds of dollars based on the distance. Verify if the car will be delivered to your home or if you need to pick it up from a nearby dealership or shipping terminal. Clear communication about delivery ensures a smooth transaction.

Shop Smart When Buying Cars on Amazon

It will be interesting to see how buying cars on Amazon continues to evolve in the coming months and years. That said, there is no doubt that this service will come with its own unique challenges for car buyers. As with any vehicle, make sure you do your research and get clarification on any warranties or policies surrounding your purchase. If you are thinking about buying a vehicle on Amazon, keep these six tips in mind.
