\nweek, my amazing younger son Kyle turns 18! So I wanted to dedicate the week\u2019s
\nblog series to AmericanStudying some Kyle Contexts, leading up to a repeat of
\nhis excellent Guest Post on the OJ Simpson trial.]<\/p>\n

Kyle is a
\nbig fan of <\/span>Kane Brown<\/span><\/a> (whom he
\nand his brother are seeing in concert soon!), and also has a personal playlist
\nthat moves smoothly between hard-core rap, hip hop, and country, so I wanted to
\ndedicate this post to highlighting a handful of examples of historic musical
\ncrossovers:<\/span><\/p>\n

1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Popera
\nPerformances<\/a>: Perhaps the most striking crossover genre is popera, a form
\nthat combines one of the oldest enduring forms of musical performance with one
\nof its most overtly contemporary. That hyperlinked last.fm page highlights many
\nof the individual artists who have embodied this combinatory cultural medium, but
\nI would also note that many popera performances feature duets
\nbetween artists<\/a> in each respective genre. Either way, popera represents
\nwhat\u2019s possible when genres truly crossover. <\/span><\/p>\n

2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Anthrax and Rap<\/a>: At a
\nvery, very different place on the crossover spectrum is Anthrax, a heavy metal
\nband who had been profoundly influenced by rap & hip hop, incorporated those
\ngenres into their own music, and then produced pioneering collaborations such
\nas their
\nsong<\/a> with rap legends Public
\nEnemy<\/a>. Much is (rightly) made of Aerosmith
\nand Run-DMC\u2019s collab<\/a>, but that a remix of an exiting song, while Anthrax\u2019s
\nmultilayered crossovers and collabs were original and to my mind even more groundbreaking.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Jones Jazzes Up Pop: These next two are just individual
\nartists whose music crosses generic boundaries. Jazz and pop have been crossing
\nover since at least Louis
\nArmstrong<\/a> (and we could say since Scott
\nJoplin<\/a> himself), but in the 21st<\/sup> century no artist embodies that
\ncrossover combination better than Norah
\nJones<\/a>. Through nine studio albums and a great deal more, Jones have brought
\nthe worlds and audiences of jazz and pop together in groundbreaking ways, creating
\nprofoundly American music in the process.<\/span><\/p>\n

4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Lil
\nNas Xplodes<\/a>: It\u2019s not a hierarchy nor a competition, but I\u2019d say that a
\ncrossover between hip hop and country is even more profoundly American (or at
\nleast more rare), though. We\u2019ve seen a variety of such crossover artists as
\nwell as songs in recent years, with Kane Brown himself high on the list. But no
\nhip hop-country crossover artist and song achieved
\nmore success<\/a>, nor as I wrote in the hyperlinked post at the start of this
\nentry generated more controversy, than did Lil Nas X and \u201cOld Town Road.\u201d And
\nhonestly, if he\u2019s making white
\nracists mad<\/a>, he\u2019s doing exactly what crossovers should do. <\/span><\/p>\n

5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Parton Rocks Out: This is a simpler one\u2014I just
\nreally love that country (and American, and universal) legend
\nDolly Parton<\/a> recently released
\nan album<\/a> of rock and roll originals and covers, and by all counts it is
\nphenomenal. Not sure it\u2019ll end up on Kyle\u2019s playlist, but it\u2019s definitely on
\nmine! <\/span><\/p>\n
