In <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/20\/12\/09\/ftc-46-states-file-antitrust-suit-against-facebook-seek-instagram-whatsapp-break-up\">December 2020<\/a>, the FTC alleged that the social media giant engaged in anti-competitive practices and wanted to break up the company. &#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-sm-12\">The lawsuit itself was initially dismissed by a Federal Court Judge in <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/21\/06\/28\/federal-court-dismisses-ftc-antitrust-complaint-against-facebook\">June 2021<\/a>, but the FTC filed a more robust and detailed complaint <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/22\/01\/11\/ftcs-lawsuit-trying-to-break-up-meta-will-go-on\">in 2022<\/a>. The case is still ongoing, and now Meta has provided additional details and arguments.&#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-sm-12\">On Monday, the social media company provided its opening statement, for which it used <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.documentcloud.org\/documents\/25896886\/metas-opening-statement-slides.pdf\">a series of slides<\/a>. The slides were afterwards made public, albeit with redactions. Accompanied by an iOS System Report with green chat icon.\" height=\"696\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"img-responsive article-image\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n<span class=\"carousel-caption\">Meta&#8217;s slides reveal data about Facebook Messenger and how it performs in relation to Apple&#8217;s Messages app. Image Credit: Meta Platforms, Inc.<\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"col-sm-12\">One of the slides reveals the weekly usage of Facebook Messenger and Instagram, and how it compares to Apple&#8217;s built-in Messages app. The information suggests that neither of the two apps comes close to the default iOS messaging app.&#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-sm-12\">With the redactions removed, Meta&#8217;s slide contains the following numbers:&#13;<\/p>\n<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Apple Messages: 88.39%<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Instagram: 48.19%<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Facebook Messenger: 37.55%<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>WhatsApp: 36.76%<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Snapchat: 23.04%<\/li>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"col-sm-12\">Right next to the numbers is an image of what appears to be an internal Apple document. The page featured in Meta&#8217;s slides bears a resemblance to authentic Apple documents, <em>AppleInsider<\/em> was told.&#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-sm-12\">The only bit of the slide that was not redacted was a quote by Apple&#8217;s Director of Product Marketing, Ronak Shah. It reads:&#13;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A &#8220;core use case&#8221; of iMessage is &#8220;to allow users to communicate with the people that are in their life that they know.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"col-sm-12\">Meta believes it can&#8217;t be considered a monopoly because Apple&#8217;s default Messages application outperforms Facebook Messenger and Instagram. The company also cited the likes of TikTok and YouTube, and claimed that rival products and services were &#8220;thriving.&#8221;&#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-sm-12\">The outcome of the case ultimately remains to be seen.
