And today as part of its prepared defense, the company sought to use Apple\u2019s Messages app as evidence that it\u2019s not a monopoly.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-997761\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Meta\u2019s opening statement slides are <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.documentcloud.org\/documents\/25896886\/metas-opening-statement-slides.pdf\">available here<\/a> for viewing in full, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/policy\/648167\/here-are-the-slides-meta-used-to-lay-out-its-defense\">per <em>The Verge<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/648893\/meta-redacted-documents-leak-ftc-antitrust-opening-statement\">as highlighted by Wes Davis<\/a>, even some of the slides with redacted info are easy to uncover.<\/p>\n<p>One slide, for example, compares weekly device usage of Apple\u2019s Messages app to Meta\u2019s competing offerings on iOS.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the numbers:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Apple Messages: 88.39% device use<\/li>\n<li>Instagram: 48.19%<\/li>\n<li>Facebook Messenger: 37.55%<\/li>\n<li>WhatsApp: 36.76%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This data is presented in the context of Meta seeking to refute the FTC\u2019s apparent perspective that standard \u201cMessaging\u201d is different from \u201cPersonal Social Networking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also an accompanying quote from Apple Director of Product Marketing, Ronak Shah, saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>A \u201ccore use case\u201d of iMessage is \u201cto allow users to communicate with the people that are in their life that they know.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, Meta can\u2019t have a monopoly when Apple\u2019s built-in Messages app is more popular\u2014at least on iOS.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Apple isn\u2019t the only company Meta highlights in its defense.
