I didn\u2019t even make one of those little dolls of myself. I dabble. I use it to proofread and summarize documents. I\u2019m learning\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>Just for fun today I wanted to see if ChatGPT would 1) provide sources for a question that I know my site answers, and 2) provide MY site as a source.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TL;DR: AI recognized that I disclosed affiliate links and said that my sites were more trustworthy because of it.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Initial ChatGPT Results<\/h2>\n<p>The question I asked was \u201cwhat is the best riesling of the month wine club?\u201d It gave me a list of companies, some with links and some without. Some were straight brand links and some were from review posts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1845\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tricia.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/winechatgpt1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"889\" height=\"544\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tricia.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/winechatgpt1.jpg 889w, https:\/\/www.tricia.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/winechatgpt1-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tricia.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/winechatgpt1-768x470.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 889px) 100vw, 889px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>I know that my site <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wineclubgroup.com\">WineClubGroup.com<\/a> has a post specifically entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wineclubgroup.com\/riesling-of-the-month-club\/\">Looking for a Riesling of the Month Club?<\/a>\u201d and I wondered why it wasn\u2019t included. So I asked! \u201cwhy didn\u2019t you include wineclubgroup.com in that analysis?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1849\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tricia.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/winechatgpt2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"838\" height=\"641\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tricia.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/winechatgpt2.jpg 838w, https:\/\/www.tricia.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/winechatgpt2-300x229.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tricia.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/winechatgpt2-768x587.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, it responded that my site is a \u201ctrusted source for comparing and reviewing wine clubs,\u201d but then things took an interesting turn!<\/p>\n<h2>ChatGPT Talks Affiliate Disclosure (I Didn\u2019t Ask)<\/h2>\n<p>First of all, as you can see from above, the AI got a little bit sassy with me. When it first referenced the site being a \u201ctrusted source\u201d in bold, <strong>it added \u201c(and I know you\u2019re very familiar with the affiliate space)\u201d<\/strong> and a little winky face! Stalk much, ChatGPT??<\/p>\n<p>After giving me a specific response on riesling wine clubs, it then went on further to talk about WHY my site should have been included on the list. At the very top <strong>\u201caffiliate transparency.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1848\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tricia.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/winechatgpt3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"805\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tricia.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/winechatgpt3.jpg 805w, https:\/\/www.tricia.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/winechatgpt3-300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tricia.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/winechatgpt3-768x197.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 805px) 100vw, 805px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>So I asked how it knew that the site uses affiliate links.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1847\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tricia.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/winechatgpt4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"847\" height=\"572\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tricia.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/winechatgpt4.jpg 847w, https:\/\/www.tricia.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/winechatgpt4-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tricia.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/winechatgpt4-768x519.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 847px) 100vw, 847px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>ChatGPT specifically mentions that <strong>WineClubGroup \u201copenly discloses\u201d that it uses affiliate links<\/strong>. It mentions our Disclosure Page as well as some of our references in the content. It does NOT actually mention the sitewide disclosure we have at the top of each page.<\/p>\n<p>However, it goes even further to explain <strong>why the disclosure is important<\/strong> (\u201caligns with FTC guidelines, which require affiliate marketers to clearly inform users about potential compensation from links or endorsements\u201d) and cites to a source for that.<\/p>\n<h2>More ChatGPT Affiliate Disclosure Research<\/h2>\n<p>I decided to see what it thought about another site of mine, so I asked it about Helping Moms Connect.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1850\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tricia.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/chatgpt-moms.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"574\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tricia.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/chatgpt-moms.jpg 740w, https:\/\/www.tricia.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/chatgpt-moms-300x233.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It did detect affiliate links and my disclosure on that site. Again it only detected my <strong>About page disclosure<\/strong> and some <strong>in-post disclosures<\/strong>, not my sitewide disclosure (which is an image). Interestingly, the site that it linked to about the FTC Disclosure Guidelines was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepma.org\">Performance Marketing Association<\/a>! It ended by saying that <strong>disclosure \u201cdemonstrates commitment to transparency and ethical affiliate marketing practices.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Takeaways and More Questions<\/h2>\n<p>While I appreciate that ChatGPT understands affiliate disclosure and that it isn\u2019t just a rule, it\u2019s a way to ethically operate, I have so many more questions!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Even though the disclosures it cites were NOT technically the ones that satisfy the FTC, should affiliates make sure that AI is picking up their disclosures in SOME way?<\/li>\n<li>Does the AI \u201ctrust\u201d a source more if it discloses links?<\/li>\n<li>Would it know I was using affiliate links if I didn\u2019t specifically mention it?<\/li>\n<li>Would it penalize me in any way for NOT disclosing links?<\/li>\n<li>Does other AI treat the issue the same way?<\/li>\n<li>Is this a way to encourage more people to disclose?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And most importantly, was all of this only tailored to ME because MY ChatGPT knows I focus on affiliate marketing ethics so much?<\/p>\n<h2>Give it a spin yourself.
