{"id":186529,"date":"2025-04-15T18:23:16","date_gmt":"2025-04-15T18:23:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/business\/finance\/donald-trump-threatens-to-remove-harvards-tax-exempt-status\/"},"modified":"2025-04-15T18:23:16","modified_gmt":"2025-04-15T18:23:16","slug":"donald-trump-threatens-to-remove-harvards-tax-exempt-status","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=186529","title":{"rendered":"Donald Trump threatens to remove Harvard\u2019s tax exempt status"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Unlock the White House Watch newsletter for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\">Your guide to what the 2024 US election means for Washington and the world<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=f7208a56-7870-4df9-b357-3533d8ddbc96&amp;newsletter-id=65b8fec772badb00166eafc6\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Donald Trump doubled down on his administration\u2019s stand-off with Harvard university with a threat to remove the university\u2019s tax exempt status.<\/p>\n<p>His warning came less than a day after the White House said it would freeze more than $2.2bn in funding for Harvard following the university\u2019s refusal to comply with demands for a series of overhauls to its governance and student discipline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerhaps Harvard should lose its Tax Exempt Status and be Taxed as a Political Entity if it keeps pushing political, ideological, and terrorist inspired\/supporting \u201cSickness?\u201d Remember, Tax Exempt Status is totally contingent on acting in the PUBLIC INTEREST!\u201d the president <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114342374504628520\" data-trackable=\"link\">wrote<\/a> on his Truth Social platform. <\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s threat adds to concerns among US higher education institutions that government intends to widen its attacks for what it claims are failures to tackle alleged antisemitism on campuses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration is considering removing tax exempt status for US universities and overhauling the accreditation system that makes them eligible for federal funding including student loans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think a lot of Americans are wondering why their tax dollars are going to these universities when they are not only indoctrinating our nation\u2019s students but also allowing such a group\u2019s egregious illegal behaviour to occur,\u201d White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe President\u2019s position on this is grounded in common sense, in the basic principle that Jewish American students, or students of any faith, should not be illegally harassed and targeted on our nation\u2019s college campuses, and we unfortunately saw that illegal discrimination take place on the campus of Harvard,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n<p>Harvard said the demands from the administration encroached on academic freedom and lacked due process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe University will not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights,\u201d Harvard\u2019s president Alan Garber said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The university is the first high profile institution to resist the administration\u2019s demands following several weeks of threats and grant freezes. <\/p>\n<p>Unlike Harvard, New York\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/af25e2dc-e2d9-4baf-8520-d037b5aa87e3\" data-trackable=\"link\"> Columbia University bowed to administration <\/a>demands after $400mn in grants were cut, which have yet to be reinstated. Instead the government is planning an aggressive court-supervised consent order to oversee the university.<\/p>\n<p>But there are signs that universities are beginning to challenge the administration. \u201cHarvard\u2019s objections to the letter it received are rooted in the American tradition of liberty, a tradition essential to our country\u2019s universities, and worth defending,\u201d said Jonathan Levin, the president of Stanford University.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cThe way to bring about constructive change is not by destroying the nation\u2019s capacity for scientific research, or through the government taking command of a private institution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Networks of university professors and teachers have already sued the administration, and there are broader actions under way to challenge a blanket freeze across universities on grants related to topics including diversity, equity and inclusion.<\/p>\n<p>Universities are also challenging a cap on indirect costs associated with grants across the country from the National Institutes of Health, and the Department of Energy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unlock the White House Watch newsletter for free Your guide to what the 2024 US election means for Washington and the world Donald Trump doubled down on his administration\u2019s stand-off with Harvard university with a threat to remove the university\u2019s tax exempt status.
